- Moses Malone was an American basketball player who played in both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1974 through 1995. The center was named the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times and was a 12-time NBA All-Star and an eight-time All-NBA Team selection. Malone won his only NBA championship in 1983, when he was both the league and Finals MVP with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2001.
Malone began his professional career out of high school after he was selected in the third round of the 1974 ABA Draft by the Utah Stars. He was named an ABA All-Star as a rookie and played two seasons in the league until it merged with the NBA in 1976. He landed in the NBA with the Buffalo Braves, who traded him after two games to the Houston Rockets. Malone became a five-time All-Star in six seasons with the Rockets. After leading the NBA in rebounding in 1979, he was named league MVP for the first time. He led the Rockets to the NBA Finals in 1981, and won his second MVP award in 1982. Malone was traded to Philadelphia the following season, when he repeated as MVP and led the 76ers to a championship in his first year. In his first of two stints with Philadelphia, he was an All-Star in each of his four seasons. Following another trade, Malone was an All-Star in his only two seasons with the Washington Bullets (known later as the Wizards). He signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Hawks, earning his 12th straight and final All-Star selection in his first season. In his later years, he played with the Milwaukee Bucks before returning to the 76ers and completing his career with the San Antonio Spurs.
Malone led the NBA in rebounding six times, including a then-record five straight seasons (1981-1985). He finished his career as the all-time leader in offensive rebounds after leading both the ABA and NBA in the category a combined nine times. Malone was nicknamed "Chairman of the Boards" for his rebounding prowess. Combining his ABA and NBA statistics, he ranks ninth all-time in career points (29,580) and third in total rebounds (17,834). He was named to both the ABA All-Time Team and the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.

Most underrated center of all time, a quiet legend... only Wilt was better on the boards. Interesting to note that both giants died way early of heart related issues.
I agree, I think Moses Malone is sometimes lost in the shuffle when discussing all-time great centers. Yes, Wilt and him passed away WAY too early:-(.

His best games were as a Houston Rocket! He was always the best player on the court in every game, starting in the 1979 season. 2 MVPs as a Houston Rocket. He dominated.

Will go to my grave wondering what Katz was doing dismantling the Sixers by trading away Moses Malone, Brad Daugherty, & Terry Catledge, & getting next to nothing in return. One of the great failures of NBA management history.

played against him in high school..it was truly ridiculous....crazy thing was they had 2 other guys that were excellent, too. lefty, len elmore and john lucas were at the game going crazy..he was skinny as a rail but quick as a cat!

Moses Malone At at 6feet 10 inches was one of the most dominant force in the NBA but he couldn't get Houston over the hump but was able with help from Dr J who needed all the help the Philadelphia 76ers to an NBA title # 454 !

2500 more offensive rebounds than the next closest person in combined nba/aba stats in far fewer seasons. 2200 more offensive rebounds than robert Parrish who played till he was 43 for the just nba record. Do you know how many fouls he drew and what a team advantage that is to get to the bonus stopping clock and getting your defense set. He invented the offensive box out. His record in offensive rebounds is like di maggios in baseball to never be broken .
Thank you. Moses Malone would foul out your whole front line. He won 3 MVPs in the Jabbar, Magic, Bird, Doc era, Malone is a Mount Rushmore player, he was getting his, believe that. I remember when we got him and I was on Broad Street for the Parade in 1983 pumping my fists because of him, he was a force and a historically great player.
@@tonygajate5780 I recall being in philly for an exhibition game( ? ) with my bucks brother and Cowen's ( acquired in part to counter malone and Dawkins) and the 3 of us ate dinner in a restaurant but through the window we could see a Crane with a huge wrecking ball. Which we thereafter analogized as the malone ball. True story. The wall it was intended for didnt last as Cowen's hurt his knee.

@@tonygajate5780 harvey catchings was a decent left handed replacement but lacked scoring capabilities, too mechanical, but a good rim protector. Still moses did not go 4,4,4 as the bucks took 1 on the 76ers march to the title. 3 or 4 HOF players in that group . Moses Cheeks Erving and Jones and Toney a near miss. Moses dominated LA . And KAJ . Magic ,et al.
@@terencewinters2154 oh yeah Catchings was an athletic shot blocker, rebounder, gave you 6 good fouls a night, I know his game, he was a 76er before he was a Buck and yeah Malone was definately a force in the finals.
When he's on the court, the best thing 2 with Moses is leave him Malone💯

Zion Williams Should be dominate or as dominate as Moses Malone was.
That's a good comparison that I hadn't thought of. Maybe Zion is a dangerous compilation of Moses and Barkley.

If he stays healthy... Perhaps his ceiling is even higher, I'd argue he both more skilled and more athletic.
