  • Darryl Dawkins (January 11, 1957 - August 27, 2015) was an American professional basketball player, most noted for his days with the National Basketball Association's Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets, although he also played briefly for the Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz late in his career. His nickname, "Chocolate Thunder", was bestowed upon him by Stevie Wonder. He was known for his powerful dunks, which led to the NBA adopting breakaway rims due to his shattering the backboard on two occasions in 1979.
Dawkins averaged double figures in scoring nine times in his 14 years in the NBA, often ranking among the league leaders in field-goal percentage. He also played in the NBA Finals three times as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Dawkins set an NBA record for fouls in a season (386 in 1983-84).

Met Darryl in Spring 1984 at the Burger King in Lugano, Switzerland when I was a 17 year-old high school student there, his hands enveloped mine like mittens. He was exceptionally kind to me as a minute skinny Swiss basketball kid - him and the rest of the NJ Nets team who were there (Jeff Turner, Micheal Ray Richardson, Otis Birdsong and coach) signed my "the Prince" book by Macchiavelli I was reading at the time. Will never forget his kindness, I didn't speak a word of English back then - I was in awe, at the time the largest human I had ever seen in person... They had crossed the border from an exhibition game they were playing in nearby Milano. We exchanged addresses and he replied to my letter, he lived in Secaucus NJ at the time - will never forget. Been in the US for 35 years now and I wish we could have cultivated our friendship! Hope he would be proud of me now as I was of him.

@@garycollier6950 It wasn't that Darryl made stupid mistakes, it was that the NBA was very much ANTI-YOUTH in those days.
Darryl was much smarter & more skilled than the youth of today.
Darryl was playing for a 76ers team that was LOADED with talented & skilled players & he had to find a way to co-exist with them.
Had he been a rookie in the mid/late 80's or the early 90's he'd fit right in.
If he'd ran with Allen Iverson, they'd won championships with the 76ers.

Out of Orlando Evans High School, Big Dawk played at the local playground there, Lorna Doone park. Played with & against him and his brothers, Chico, Mitch & Troy. All good ballers. Once he got a rebound on the left side of the goal, down low. The ball was right in my face and put my hand on it. Big Dawk went up with no ball, as I blocked it out of his hands. He called "foul" and when he came down, he looked me in my eyes and said , "That wasn't a foul, that was rape!". He was with the 76's at the time and at 5'10", eventhough it was a clean block, I wasn't gonna argue with the home town hero. "OK, your ball, Big Dawk". LOL

Dawkins breaking backboards by his powerful dunks and hanging on the rim is what brought in different physical connection of the hoop to the backboard . They put on a spring loaded hinge where the basket connects to the backboard . It's sufficiently tight but will bend enough to take some of the force off where the basket is connected to the backboard so there is not enough leverage to break the basket off the backboard or break the whole backboard . Also i think they replaced the see through backboards which were mostly glass & shattered, with a more flexible transparent acrylic or some other see through(transparent) synthetic material.

I loved Chocolate Thunder but in the finals he couldn't hold Kareem or Parrish and as u see bill walton either. Sixers were the only team to interrupt Lakers and Celtics but it wasn't until the trade for Moses that the sixers won. But Dawkins as a Funkateer at the time was great for there were many Funkateers at that time Sir Nose was my favorite

@@ronsapp4780 Oh okay,, thanks I was a kid during those times and my memory escapes me. This series introduced me to televised NBA games. Before that, I had never even seen basketball on television. Fell in love with Dr. J after this series. It's funny because before I even watched a game on television, I remember that Dr. J was a superstar because he was always on television commercials for his Converse shoes (which I have to admit that as a child I did own a pair). I can still see him on those commercials flying through the air and the song playing, "hey Dr. J. where you get those moves". I vaguely remember Dunleavy even playing on th 6ers during that time. I know right after this series, I started collecting basketball cards. I am trying to remember if I had the Dunleavy 6ers card. I know I had Bibby, Collins, Mix, Dr. J, Caldwell Jones. I'm not sure if I got Dr. Dunkenstein card. I really remember Dunleavy from his Rockets days with Sampson and Malone and them but I vaguely remember him with the 6ers. That is why I was asking if he started. Thanks again!

Love love love this guy, his personality, his "big kid"-ness. So embrace-able. But as sad as it is, Billy Cunningham was right. and the move they made to trade Dawkins to Jersey and upgrade to Moses Malone won them a title.
Dawkins did a lot right. But if he had ever learned how to channel his showmanship and funk and channel his awesome self-expression towards the team concept, he might have had four or more rings with the Sixers in seven years (77-83) and made them one of the great dynasties ever.

Dawkins was a wunderkind and certainly captured or imaginations as teenagers but the playoffs were ALWAYS FRUSTRATING.
I must have been 13 when I became aware of his existence and I was still learning the game myself.
If you want to know how guys leaving college early these days would have fared in the old NBA. Look no further than Dawkins. The parallels between him and D Howard are striking. He should've had a much better career
