I always found that the spartan project is similar to Starship trooper' society: both are terrible but you can justify them by saying "it's necessary to save humanity against an alien invasion". Except that's not their origin. Society in starship troopers became an authoritarian military state waaaay before the war with the Arachnid began. The spartan project started with terrible human experiments on kidnapped children because the military government wanted to suppress human rebels. It's a shame that the halo series rarely mention the fact that Master Chief is basically a child soldier.
You might not realize this, but Starship Troopers is intended to be satire. It's not meant to be taken seriously. The entire movie is a criticism of militarism and imperialism. The war with the Arachnid is literally a false flag attack to justify the existence of the authoritarian state.
@@SimonNZ6969 You are correct in saying that the movie is satire but the book is serious about it. Basically the book was written with the idea of "society would be better if it was more like this" while the movie was done with the idea "wouldn't it be extremely stupid if society was like this?"

The Spartans are some of the best super soldiers in all of science fiction. At least in my opinion. Second to Space Marines from Warhammer 40,000, they are something that any human would see as a symbol of hope. At least if they are on your side. I'm not dissing on the Insurrection, I'm just saying. They are my favorite super soldiers of all time. Or at least in my top 10. Though the Spartan-IV program is in inferior to the Spartan-II program, I would consider all Spartans the best of the best. They've earned it.
Spartans are more tactically flexible than Marines are as well, plus they have no Heresy to snub their full capabilities. They fight dirty as they see fit and adapt to whatever the situation is.
@@KillerOrca depends on the lore. There are Space Marine chapters that can give Spartans a run for their money. In fact, one tenant of the Codex Astartes is about tactical flexibility. That's why a Tactical Marine is just as capable as an Assault Marine or Devastator, they've done both before. I'd say Chapters like the Ultramarines and Raven Guard could probably whoop the asses of any Spartan. Given that Space Marines fight 28k to 38k years into the future, this shouldn't be surprising
Physically Space Marines are Superior, Armor wise- Spartan armor is more advance as it has shielding. Astartes Armor is actually weak against Plasma Weaponry (what the Covenant use).
@@williamalfonso1373 kinda depends on how plasma is translated from Halo to Warhammer. Astartes Power Armor has very high heat absorption. That's why lasguns are less than useful unless fired in large numbers against Marines. The reason plasma works well in 40k is a combination of very high heat and a very large projectile. Halo plasma weapons are almost exclusively rapid fire, meaning it would take subsequent shots to get through Space Marine armor, closer to lasguns than 40k plasma guns. The notable exception to this rule would be the Fuel Rod gun as it has a larger projectile
@@williamalfonso1373 That is one of the reasons I said they are second to Space Marines. Armor wise Spartans surpass. But among other things, Space Marines would be considered equals to Spartans. But it depends on what.

@@williamalfonso1373 Well, the S-IV's were never intended to be as capable as the S-II's and S-III's. They were intended to take the Spartan model to a large scale. Spartans are great, but what about the marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen than put their lives on the line while battling hordes of alien aggressors? Do they deserve a round of applause also?
One would hope that eventually infantry level armor reaches the level of odst armor eventually as the odst armor advances. Infantry forces are critical in ways that chapions cannot match. A spartan can do a raid but they cannot hold in the long term as their primary role is to break an opposing force where they are needed.
"your mistake is seeing Spartans as military hardware......don't underestimate them but most of all do not underestimate him" can I say Halsey sums up the Spartans the best in that cut scene in halo 4.

Depends on how you define "close". If we're talking equals? No. The II's where chosen from the absolute peak of human genetic perfection and trained from an extremely early age to be the ultimate warriors. III's would be near that but since they were genetically inferior, trained in larger numbers so they less individual attention, and given inferior armor most of the time they would fall a bit short. Though given similar weapons i'd say the difference would only be around 3-5%. On a good day one of the best III's could probably take a II in a fight if they had similar equipment. But only on a good day. IV's are adults when augmented and given Spartan training. A lot of their world view and tactics are set before they even get considered for the program. I'd guess a IV would be somewhere around 10-15% less effective than a II, which is quite a gap in capabilities.Even with similar equipment I don't see a IV ever being a match for a II even on a good day. Even a group of IV's would struggle with an average II all things being equal. Though it is within the realm of possibility for the program to hit the jackpot and augment a specimen that approaches the genetic superiority of a II or III. Such a outcome would be extremely unlikely and probably only narrow the gap to around 7% or so due to the age they began training. TL/DR: III's would be close to II's but still inferior. IV's would be inferior to both and not even close to II's.
I’m sure that if Noble Six wasn’t still chilling in her cave, she would have been a first choice to go after Blue team. though she would have to choose her own fire team

I like the UNSC created a entire new Branch of Armed Forces for SPARTANs. Halo 5's armor and vehicle description shows that Spartans are in the midst of receiving new, cutting edge dropship, called Slepnir. Though it's a long ways out, I have a feeling Spartan Operations will supercede the Army and the Marines.
I originally saw the spartans as numbering no more than a battalion or regiment. due to the fact that they basically become a 5 man fighting force that could theoretically hold a force down for a prolonged period of time or as shown in comics and books act as behind the line operatives. I find their expansion into its own branch hoping to expand into the tens of thousands counter intuitive to their use. also a possibility of rogue spartans due to the recruitment of adult candidates. gotta get them while they are young.
For those of you not familiar with Halo lore, to learn about Spartans, especially the 2nd class, is truly an awesome experience. These soldiers are so, incredible. Their teamwork chemistry, their depth perception, they're like acrobatic, lightning fast tanks in the form of a man or woman. Brilliant, genius soldiers. No gungho bullshit, military jargon, no ego, pizza parties or glory. Just real, adult decision making. Their armor is intricate like the human body. Absolutely dazzling warriors. It's one of the main ingredients of the magic that is Halo.
If you compare Spartans to beer then Spartan IIs and IIIs are like fine microbrews, while Spartan IVs are like mass produced , bulk, industrial beers like Coors Light and Keystone Light. Contrary to what some people say, those last 2 are beers. Spartan IVs are Spartans, they're just Spartan light.

Alone, Spartans are nightmares of the battlefield, walking blenders capable of depopulating the equivalent of whole cities with little help. But as the tip of the spear of the UNSC, allied with the unaugmented masses, they are the ultimate answer to “you and what army”
Spartan IIs and IIIs were necessary in the type of indoctrination and training they underwent. While IVs are effective, they lack the laser focus of their predecessors. As tragic as it may sound, IIs and IIIs lacking in humanity in favor of becoming living weapons was what the UNSC needed the most against an overwhelming enemy.
"But perhaps most importantly, it has given to the Spartans of the UNSC today a formal legitimacy, so that they no longer need to sever themselves from their humanity in order to preserve it." This, to me, underlines the true tragedy of the Spartan-II's. I have to wonder if any of the remaining Spartan II's would know what to do in a galaxy without war, or if the only happiness they could find would be in the undertaking of dangerous missions and operations in service to the UNSC. I love the S-II's. They will always be the superior soldiers. But I think the truth of the matter is that they lost their 'humanity' long, long ago.
The Spartan-II and Spartan-III changed the course of the war, something the Spartan-IV is incapable of. While the S-II and S-III were very limited in numbers, their effectiveness were overwhelmingly large. The S-IV is greatly effective, but that is compared to a foot soldier or an elite trooper. The S-IV program is pretty much upgraded normies to resemble the Spartans, while S-II and S-III were truly Spartans. The mass-production of Spartans gave higher numbers, but the loss in efficiency is a clear cut. Instead of operatives and soldiers capable of surviving dozens of battles, achieving impossible feats or winning even against the most dire of odds, the Spartans have been washed down to shock troopers. Which also means that certain mission that have been unlocked, become possible due to that high mission efficiency, a mission which could turn the tide, are now lost. In case of a campaign and the deployment of a Spartan-IV fireteam, it is reasonable to expect for 1 or 2 members to fall. While previously, a Spartan was deployed because the campaign was needed to be won for sure. Something still unsure when a S-IV is deployed.

I would love to give a contribution by adding subtitles in my language (Italian) if there was a way to do it I would love to help for this and any other video
I'm still not clear what sets Spartans apart from any other Special Forces. Wouldn't it make more sense just to incorporate the Spartans into the UNSC Marines Service branch? The Spartans focus on small unit tactics, infiltration and stealth. This is exactly what ODSTs in the Marines did. Like what do the Marines do now that Spartans have been scaled to mass deployment? The UNSC Navy should have Power-Projection, Void-Supremacy and Military Intelligence covered. The UNSC Army should have Conventional Warfare and Planetary Defense covered. The Spartans would be preferable to the Marines for both Counter-Insurgency and Deniable-Ops missions. I get that Spartans are the protagonists of the Halo Universe, but you don't have to keep building up their importance in the world. They were already cool as future super soldiers, who took on the most dangerous missions in support of a larger army.
Instead of just winging it the director of the upcoming halo series could of just came to the Templin Institute. Instead we'll get non-Canon pew pew oooo big halo ring and guns and aliens and spartan armor pew pew so cool.
So, where does our hero, Master Chief, fit in relation to this video. I'm under the impression that he is one of the original Spartans, but since I've never played more than the first Halo, I've not gotten the full story.
He was one of the first spartans, gen 2. The gen 1 program never got off the ground. He and the others were kidnapped at the age of 6 and indoctrinated to fight the insurrection. He operated as leader of the Spartans until Reach when most of gen 2 and gen 3 spartans died. The only living gen 2s today are Red team (Halo Wars), Gray team (The Cole Protocol), and Blue team (chief's personal squad featured in many novels and also Halo 5). I believe Blue team is part of Spartan ops. Gray and Red are traditional military.
There is quite a bit of lore to all of this. if you want a fuller experience I recommend reading The Fall of Reach, by Eric Nylund. The Chief is a part of the Spartan II program. in 2517, 75 6 year old children were abducted and went through a grueling, specially made training program to create the ultimate super soldiers. these children had been genetically screened for the best humanity had to offer. they were smarter, stronger, faster, had better senses, and the list goes on, than the average humans. they are described in the books at some points as 1 in billions. (I did some math on that, and this must be exaggerated, but the point stands. extreme outliers.) the best of the best. at the age of 14, these 75 children underwent extreme physical augmentations. increased bone density, enhanced strength, and a whole slew of modifications to improve their physiology. they even performed brain surgery to improve vision, and I think some other modifications to their brains as well. These augmentations were so extreme that roughly half the candidates died during the augmentation process. a few survived, but washed out of the program. the 32 or so that survived the ordeal and became full fledged Spartans became the ultimate super soldier. super fast, strong, and their reflexes were enhanced to an extreme degree, amongst other feats. They were given MJOLNIR armor, a powered armor suit specifically designed for the Spartans. the armor enhances their already incredible abilities, and gives excellent protection. Over the course of the war, most Spartans died fighting the Covenant. The Chief is one of the few survivors of this generation of Spartans. He was the leader of the Spartans, and considered the best overall. not to say that he was much better than the other Spartans, but he was the best leader amongst them, and the most well rounded. The feats of the Spartan IIs are astonishing. suffice it to say they've made a massive contribution to the war effort for humanity. There is also the Spartan III class, but I'll skip that. Now, the Spartan IVs are the ones talked about in this video. Adults chosen from the various branches of the UNSC military. Their modifications and training were far less severe than that of the Spartan II and III class. They are, in comparison to the II class, lesser soldiers. Super soldiers, but not the ultimate super soldiers like the IIs were. The Spartan II program could never be big. there are far too few viable candidates, and the resource cost and ethical implications especially are too steep a price. The creation of the II class was incredibly inethical. the IV class is a far more standardised and humanized approach to super soldier creation. hope this was what you were looking for.

Unknown. The augmentation process for the S-II's and S-III's kills their sex drives, although they were probably sterilised anyway. The augmentation process for the S-IV's is more advanced and less extreme, plus sterilisation would be difficult to justify in a public program with volunteers. So the Master Chief is incapable of sexual desire or procreation at all, but a Spartan IV might be.
To add onto Hippy Griff, Spartan 1's (Sergeant Johnson's generation) were capable of having offspring, but they also aren't augmented anywhere near as much as their successors.
yes for the IVs, but questionable for the IIIs and IIs. the later have basics lost their sex drive and more invasive augmentations could have had residual effects on fertility in both sexes but we know from Spartan Ops and Fireteam Majestic that IVs definitely still have the sex drive
I have a question. Were women allowed to enter into this augmentation program? If so are there rules against relationships with in the army? And if a Spartan man and woman have a child together… would the kid be born with some degree of enhanced ability?
There are quite a few Spartan women, and on the question of relationships, it depends on what generation. Plus Spartan 2's and 3's are pretty single minded focus on their mission.

@@francesco8000 worth nothing that Heinlein also had other thought experiment books regarding governments/societies such as extreme libertarianism in "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress." Too many people think Heinlein is a fascist for portraying a society that is a functional one in one of many books.
@@yellowprime8491 I'm not an expert about Heinlein but he sounds like a mixbag: he probably was not a fascist BUT some of his view (expecially about the military) were the kind of stuff that someone with a fascist ideology would have supported.
I honestly believe that he wrote the book to show his idea of an ideal society (kinda like "The City of the Sun") built around personal responsibility and the military without realizing that he created a pretty fascist society.
@@francesco8000 You would do well to read the short stories. The franchise is granted to everyone who has a career field which is useful to society, which includes cops, firefighters, and teachers. The idea of limiting the franchise to people who have skin in the game is a feature of Republics, not Fascism.
It's also important to point out that non-citizens in the ST universe have every right we in the Western world would recognize except the franchise. This includes, among other things, the right to openly and freely suggest that the government is equivalent to used toilet paper, which is hardly something that Fascist givernments would tolerate.
It always amuses me that Heinlein gets shit on for having pro-military viewpoints while Asimov is never criticized for his positive portrayal of authoritarian governments and denigration of free will in the Foundation series.
The Spartan soldiers are iconic, but their past is tragic!
Indeed; one group taken from their families, another losing their homes and sent to die, both losing almost any chance to have a future of their own.
The 4 program is actually pretty brilliant. It solved the main issue of the other programs of manning. Time and technology can bridge the gap over time too.
Dr. Halsey doesn't think Highly of Spartan 4's. Its a proven fact as they are rash in decision making as seen in Spartan Ops episode 2.
@@williamalfonso1373 Well, the S-IV's were never intended to be as capable as the S-II's and S-III's. They were intended to take the Spartan model to a large scale. The surviving S-II's and S-III's would continue to be elite special forces, fulfilling that role, but the S-IV's were meant to be an elite fighting force that could be deployed en masse. Numbers have a quality of their own, after all. Very little is going to be capable of matching a hundred Spartans on a battlefield, or a thousand Spartans in a war.

Imagine thinking that Spartan 3s or 4s even remotely come close to Spartan 2s in capability.
III's do. IV's are a significant step behind but overall are still leagues better than any non Spartan force.
I’m sure that if Noble Six wasn’t still chilling in her cave, she would have been a first choice to go after Blue team. though she would have to choose her own fire team
@@mekboy7403 spartan 3s are onpar physically, the augmentations were just safer chemical augmentations to be more reliable and work despite not the best genetics. if anything the spartan 3 program would of been the better program if it had the same doctrine as the spartan 2 program. not make a stop gap but a true super soldier mjolnir and all. spartan 4s are also extremely underrated. outside of the poor representation of them. they have multiple years of experience pre spartan program, then are augmented and giving years more of training plus experience. and have access to a super intense highly realistic training arena simulating real combat nearly perfectly. plus theyre trained by spartans 2s and 3s themselves. spartan 4s were initially not great, due to honestly poor writing. but theyve been painted to be a lot better now. with more of them being nearly onpar with spartan 2s and 3s when in armor. you give them the 20 years of experience mosts 2s and 3s would have now, the survivors that is. they should nearly onpar if not surpassing in some areas like long distance running due to their custom made organs

Alone, Spartans are nightmares of the battlefield, walking blenders capable of depopulating the equivalent of whole cities with little help.
But as the tip of the spear of the UNSC, allied with the unaugmented masses, they are the ultimate answer to “you and what army”
Thank you the English subtitle.
The Spartans were all nearly wiped out towards the end of the war with huge amounts of Spartan 2s and 3s dying on reach alone
"But perhaps most importantly, it has given to the Spartans of the UNSC today a formal legitimacy, so that they no longer need to sever themselves from their humanity in order to preserve it."
This, to me, underlines the true tragedy of the Spartan-II's.
I'm actually surprised that there are very few comments in today's video's comment section!

Can spartans produce offspring post-augmentations?
To add onto Hippy Griff, Spartan 1's (Sergeant Johnson's generation) were capable of having offspring, but they also aren't augmented anywhere near as much as their successors.
yes for the IVs, but questionable for the IIIs and IIs. the later have basics lost their sex drive and more invasive augmentations could have had residual effects on fertility in both sexes
