Cause Simon has ears . he got off a little bit . you can hear Luke stop playing the Riff and come back in after a few bars .(between 3:20- 3:25 ) so Simon stops at 3:29 and understands HEARS that he was off and comes back in on an 'e + uh ' it takes huge balls to do this obviously ....to stop listen and 'readjust' ....instead of keep blasting and speed up or down to be together with Luke Greg & Lee, who know 'Pocket' . Great lesson here by the Masters
@@ericwilhelm2941 If we want to be truly analytical… at that part Luke (and Lee also) was going together in time with Simon. He stopped playing because he heard that Greg was a bit behind. Than he came back on “one” - still in time with Simon but again stopped playing because the piano part was lagging. Then Simon adjusted himself to the piano… and Luke came back once he was sure that they had the sync again… These are the situations where true musicianship shows…
Spoken like a true drummer!! I love you can play this in 4, or a 3/8-5/8, or a 3/4 or 6/8 time. Just to get all the various possibilities and feels out of the riff.
For a music addict, if you took drugs for this, you'd never get up out of your seat! This is the amazing display I've ever heard! Phillips is really the most creative drummer of all time.
there are a lot of great drummers ( technique and odd time monsters) but for me he is the most tasteful of the bunch. Technique, dynamics, feel, playing always the right stuff, never overplays, always spot on and knows what the music needs. Musicality 10+. Love this cat.
a Masterclass in how to build a simple ostinato , here very similar to Ravel's Bolero, then smash it out of the park into a different stratosphere. This line up is just stellar. Lee, Luke, Gregg, Simon et al... I was fortunate to go to a few gigs on that tour...
This is the Modern Day Bolero A La Simon! Beautiful. The total control of all band members to give Simon the base for this incredible Solo is nothing short of a masterpiece.
The Guys: " Hey Simon why don't you play a solo over the signature riff?" Simon: "Sure! Do you guys think you can hang on it that long and still keep it in time?" The Guys: " Here...hold our collective beers!"
I do believe this is the coolest Simon solo I've heard. Huge props to the guys playing during his solo. Not an easy thing to do, but, Greg (keyboards) is the metronome here.
Simon just becamke my fav. drummer and that's very hard. There are some really seasoned badass drummers out there who also can play any gig and session (Vinnie Colaiuta anyone? The list goes on), but it's very hard to beat Simon's wacky inventiveness, control, deep understanding of multi-meters and his unique, relatively unprocessed and open "ultra detailed hi fi" approach to the drum sound. He is the perfect replacement for the great, late Jeff because Simon doesn't even try to emulate him.
Absolutely agree - probably the only drummer on the planet that could fill Jeff's shoes...in the context of Toto. anyway. Shannon is an excellent drummer but just as when Kenny Jones tried to replace Keith Moon, there was just something missing...
I was in tears when i found out he left ToTo. I just could'nt help myself..I don't know. My all-time favorite drummer left my all-time favorite band. I i did not know to overcome such a blow to me. I'll never forget that emotion that day.
I noticed Simon's Toto T-shirt right away, but it took me eight year to realize what it actually means: It's a Toto IV shirt - way before he joined the band. Quite a statement. I'd say Simon's been a real Toto fan all along. :)
@Thomas amazing sound quality!! For me, it's Luke's face around 3:28. Says it all. Two of the finest musicians to grace the stage. Luke got Simon into the band, and the mutual respect and chemistry saved Toto in 1992 in my humble opinion. Same Hydra ostinato but very different solo here, on Acrylic shells in Argentina: ruclips.net/video/XgORlPI6Sr0/видео.html
@@Solar-Busters I think after 20 years he just wanted to pursue other projects... like Hiromi, with his old wingman Anthony Jackson... More producing other albums. I miss him in Toto every day... I hope Rush decide to continue, and invite Si-Phi... I think he is one of the very few who could do that gig... But whether he would want to do all the electronic drums that Neil Peart did...?
Unfortunately they were not. Still one of the best touring acts and to think they first had Jeff Pocaro and then Simon Phillips is extraordinary!! They cannot be matched!
I whould love to know from a reliable source why Luka didn't hang on to Simon, I'm a seasoned drummer & actually setup the drums with Jeff's drum tech in 1980 in college @ UNA. To me Simon was very very close to Jeff ( RIP Bro ) 🙏
Simon, i miss You on Toto concerts
That smile at 5.45.....i know how he must have felt. Such a rush and relieve! Priceless.
Those ten times you asked yourself "does he still know exactly where the beat is?", he answers you with a crash and kick on the next 1. Glorious.

the most exciting drummer on the planet and the best drum sound ever
Ditto
Come on Sir Ulrich. Do a drum-chest game with him. I know u you would shit your pants, knowing to take the battle

.... and always a smile in his face, still Simon.....
It's not for nothing that Simon Phillips is the best drummer in the world, awesome Drummer 👍👍👍
Simon Philips. What a great transition after Jeff. Simon is an absolute musician. All encompassing.
WOW I never watched this before...SIMON!!!!!
He's the best!!! ❤
Jeff Pocaro looking down & sayin YOU doin Toto Proud!!
Please come back, you are the beating heart of TOTO!!!
This is the best Hydra instrumental ever played live, with that powerful synth aside from the looping tones. Plus with Simon's solo.
Never heard a drummer who was so musical. Seen him five times with Toto, every solo starts and ends completely different.

I watch this weekly, inspiring to say the least, great music for all these years, what a great group of musicians 🙏🏼
accuracyof Thomas Lang, speed of Dennis Chambers, technique of Dave Weckl, creativity of Tony Royster jr, and groove of Steve Gadd = Simon Phillips
Or Vinnie....
I don’t about the Dave Weckl reference however if anything drummer he’s very similar to IMO is
Lenny White
Don't think Dave, but sure to include Billy.
Most of all he has a lot of Billy Cobham in his playing. And that’s a good thing! 🤩
and Carter Beauford.
I was there! One of the best drum solo i ve ever seen!
Simon Phillips: a bloody phenomena! Bow to the legend! ❤
This is the Modern Day Bolero A La Simon! Beautiful. The total control of all band members to give Simon the base for this incredible Solo is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Let's just appreciate Greg Phillinganes holding the same groove for 5 mins!
You've covered exactly my own thought...
And Lee
Lee Sklar sent me, and I'm so glad he did. Awesome!!!
This solo just about brings tears to my face. So beautiful and powerful, sophisticated yet simplistic....
Luke's admiring Simon's playing as well. Props to Greg for keeping it going without missing a note. The sound of the drums... the best ever.

If you have ever worked on stage, you know that those flashing powerful lights are a nightmare !
This man is incredible . Can listen to him all day . Such musical and technical is rarely heard
The Guys: " Hey Simon why don't you play a solo over the signature riff?"
Simon: "Sure! Do you guys think you can hang on it that long and still keep it in time?"
The Guys: " Here...hold our collective beers!"
Master he come to another earth , simply amazing drummer with a exelent band called toto!!!
Genius..could listen to this a million times. Such a melodic playing ..hat's off to you Simon
I do believe this is the coolest Simon solo I've heard. Huge props to the guys playing during his solo. Not an easy thing to do, but, Greg (keyboards) is the metronome here.
One can actually feel the struggle in Sklar, Phillinganes and Lukather to keep up with this crazy, crazy, crazy, CRAZY drumming.
Awesome! The band!... the song! and drum solo! Your guys are the best!
Merci M. Phillips
Simon is a MACHINE!!!! A VERY technical MACHINE!!!!
The man is from another planet..awesome

back in 80's he was even more aggressive with the same detailed approach. Check out tours with oldfield during 82/84 years.
Favorite Drummers... Phil Ehart-Kansas.... Neil Peart-Rush... Nick Mason-Pink Floyd... Frank Beard -ZZ Top... Simon Phillips - Toto
Simon the best drummer ever!!!!
One of my favorite drum solo. Simon Phillip rock on!
This is the best drummer of all time, GOD
Of course he is
The possibility is high, yes!
YES !
You can read such comments about Weckl, Bruford, Cobham, Copeland and a thousand others as well, and they are all somehow right but pointless
A+ Simon, i miss you brother.
Holy Shit Simon!! Effing crushing it!! What a band!!! The best musicians in the world right there folks. Geeeezus!
It can't be better. Just not possible. Man... Simon, you're the GOD of drums!
there is a heart and soul in accuracy here ? top drawer!!
drum sound is HUGE! ahhh....beautiful organic drums
Hat's off! I love this guy! Master!

The man is truly a king.
Great way to do a drum solo including the entire band. I like that and adds a lot of background That is wonderful.
Holy Shit, this maybe the greatest drum solo I’ve ever heard, Simon is a fucking beast!
Simon you a king on the skins, very impressive
The Awesomeness is there .
jeff will smile from above to see simon playing like this, don't you think?
Joyous...
Incredible talent
Omg
In my dream Im playing like this man.
Lukather looking at Simon probably thinking DAMN! :-)
Simon is just amazing!!
Bravo!!!!
Grande uomo!Fantastico è dir poco!!
this just simply amazing drum solo from small part of the song
Absolute brilliance!!
i love at 5:11 when they come back to the song! so powerful and full of joy
The Beast! That's full accomplished modern drumset drumming for me: virtuosity and musicality (and all improvised which is not nothing).
Lee Sklar brought me here.
Lee is generous, when he recommends a video clip he never misses.
just wow!
I noticed Simon's Toto T-shirt right away, but it took me eight year to realize what it actually means: It's a Toto IV shirt - way before he joined the band. Quite a statement. I'd say Simon's been a real Toto fan all along. :)
+Dino Schachten Either that or he spilled mustard on his last shirt right before the show and had this one brought over from the gift shop :)
Hahaha. :D
The Solo for Jeff P

This is so right.
Luke: 😏
So, why did Simon leave the band ?

Toto won't be the same with out him
they are not

shannon forrest looks like hes holding the fort down. definitely not jeff or simon, but still great nonetheless
@@scuffguardian I'm liking Shannon a lot actually. He holds it downs
Simply the best!
Another great drummer ! I love this cat!
what a turnaround for a drummer!!
His smile at 5:13 says it all.
Respect.
That's speed.... Damnnnn...

My top 3 favorite drummers with Louie, and Vinnie
amazing
The Best
My favourite drummer...wish to here something of him together with Mike Oldfield...would be awesome.
He plays different. He is an alien.
Very difficult and brilliant drumsolo. Only Simon can play this!
simon plays without metronome and cambles...amazing
Leland Sklar, yeah!!!Rock Onward TOTO!
still love it!!
Simon, The one and only.
God in person!
Freek Vogels ?
perfect
AMAZING ... TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!
Brutal!!!!!!!
dicesi....fenomeno !!!!
Nothing harder to play than an Ostinato !!!!!!!
They are not musicians they are magicians.
Was that Leland sklar on bass
Yep..
j'adore
