Small note. Fantastic video btw. As a Greatsword main I can confirm that in very “specific” situations the charge “tackle” is not invincible. When Alatreon tries to stomp on you with his forelegs he will indeed knock you onto your back and trigger that aweful crawling away animation. Also, does not grant invincibility frames, it’s basically a counter that mitigates a percentage of damage taken when used effectively. While not invincible it is very useful and can even be used to live through Arch Tempered monsters ultimate attacks with end game builds.

Heya, love the guide on GS. You did missed a pretty important mechanic with tackle and jumping wide slash, they are both powered by charging your charge slash attacks. Also, tackle doesn’t give you I-frames, it gives you super armour, allowing you to tank a hit without being knock back.

@@Trojanischer_Esel Not sure how it is with a charge blade but with hammer, sns and switch axe you fight more on reaction and countering with the great sword you gotta know the monsters move set fairly well and wait for an opening or create one if you know where the monster will be. At some point it should click, my moment was when odagoron jumped to swipe at me and I knew he would jump back after so I shoulder tackled than hit him with a true charge slash knocking him down. 1 perk the GS has, Mounting potential for other hunters without using ledges or jumping off walls or edge beetles, just have them uppercut you into the air and perform your attack in the air. Just pray that the monster doesn’t sidestep or attacks as your in mid-flight. Me and my brother run GS as a main weapons and launching each other and getting the mount is always a dopamine spike as nothing was in vain and we get a monster toppled over and gives others a moment to sharpen weapons, heal, or set things up to ruin a monster’s day.

good video! Greatsword is always been a huge power house since *Monster Hunter 2*, and even to this day, it is one of my favourite weapon to use because how ridiculous the power is, easily topple monsters and deal 1K damage is NUTS!
"Hol up, Monster Hunter 2? Not the first one?", Yeah sadly the first one GS need to let the crown go to Lance, because:
    1. Lance hit hard and fast and can block.
    2. Greatsword is slow and only hit as hard as lance because it doesn't have Charge Attack yet (you read that right, there's no charge slash or any kind of charge attack in the first MH)

I’ve learned to use the opening attack and stow to run in 90% of situations, at least until I know the monster moveset really well to be more confident or when an obvious opportunity presents itself. The main reason I would recommend it to any player regardless of weapon main is because it will teach you to slow down and actually read the monster which I was atrocious at as a previous dual blades main. I know it seems like you aren’t getting much damage in with just the opening attack only to run but the reality is you aren’t that far behind dps wise by doing that, doing 100 damage every 10 seconds vs 2 damage very quickly with dual blades or something isn’t actually that different and I encourage people to give it a fair chance.

Two of my most epic moments in this game were with this weapon. One is when I was basically trying to remember how to play it again after a LONG time not playing the game at all and decided that Tigrex is a good training partner 😅. It was a bit rough, but the ending was glorious when he charged at me I dodged into a climbable wall and smacked him on the head with a charged aerial attack finishing the hunt
Other moment isn't a crazy strong monster, but just -an unfortunate case of ABSOLUTE HUMAN BRUTALITY- a happy little accident. Random side mission with Great Girros, poor boy fell, I'm charging my TCS and letting it go. Moments before the BIG hit connects a small girros jumps in the way and gets hit and then another one and a third one and only then my blade lands on the bigger one. Those zesty sounds, visual effects and the hit lag procking over and over was absolutely insane. Only thing that'd make it more epic (and horrifying) is if it was the final hit 😅

Greatsword also simplifies the game a bit. You deal very little elemental damage with the great sword (at least compared to your raw damage) so you can more or less just ignore weapon swaps between monsters and just pick whatever greatsword has the highest raw.
The importance of elements varies wildly between weapons with greatsword having the least importance for element and dual blades being the most. A good way to estimate the importance of elements for GS, whatever the element says just divide it by 12 and add to the raw only if you are using the element the monster is weak to. Dual blades, in comparison, keep whatever number there is and increase it by 50%.

Made a raw one with fatalis, and then one for each element, with alatreon as the dragon element. I actually made 2 ice ones. One I used... I think it was legiana for decent damage with good ice element, and the other.... the big fish sword. I tell ya it's super fun. My main issue when making the builds ends up being deco slots. There is also one thing that you forgot and maybe its not common knowledge but great sword makes most damage when hitting with mid/ bit upper part of the swords blade and makes less damage if only the tip of the sword connects. If you ever wondered why your True charged slash didnt do so amazing damage To a familiar monster then its because you only hit it with tip of the blade.

you can actually turn around 180 after the ledge cheese attack. Meaning u can ledge cheese a monster thats below the ledge. You will jump into the ledge, but you can release in any direction, including backwards :), I use this to insta KO monsters w hammer all the time, (works the same)

I just returned to the game and honestly, I wish I could find some videos that didn't assume I've already beaten every monster in the game and could find helpful advice for where I'm at specifically. Example, I never beat Alatreon or Raging Brachy. The build I'm using is a completely unoptimized one and I can't remember what any of my old ones are for. All I know is I got loads of defense, have nothing but attack boost augments on the weapon I'm using and can kill most things. I can't remember much of anything and the noobie player base is pretty toxic.

Never used Greatsword, but its the next weapon on my list to try to get good with. My main is switch axe but sometimes i get annoyed because there is no defense in MHW with this weapon. So with the shoulder tackle and being able to block, it feels like a good weapon alternative to the SA.

I did most of MHW with Sns, including my first Alatreon kill. Was testing other weapons and decided to give Greatsword another try since when i first used it i found it too slow.
Now im hooked and might just main GS over Sns!

great video. small note to new greatsword players, don't block. You cant move or turn during it, and blocking an attack reduces your sharpness. usually, just run evade extender/window and roll, since rolling comes out very quickly

    • @The_Argent_Dragon
      @The_Argent_Dragon 10 месяцев назад +1

As a GS Main I'd actually disagree-- learning to see an oncoming attack and have that trigger response is a good building block for preparing to learn the guard-kick-tackle, which is the safest way to go into a tackle in place when your weapon is sheathed. When I was new to Greatsword, I felt a lot safer knowing I could block things if I wasn't sure about tackling or just couldn't tank it with a tackle. The damage to your sharpness depends on the strength of the attack, as well, so it's also a useful cue to teach players what they should block or tackle instead-- until they get Fatalis set, health regen or full stun res, they won't have the benefit of just tackle-regenning everything, so they need to be careful what they tackle and how often. Plus, while you can tackle through roars, guarding them leads to less commitment and stamina loss on the pursuit. Offensive Guard's nothing to scoff at to add damage to greatsword either, and that's pretty easy to get free 5-15% if they just learn what to block and what to tackle. Evasion will also reposition and consume more stamina, it's a more commital option, which for beginners to a weapon, might be too much of an ask.

Very great video as a great sword user when the game first came out but have not played for a very long time, my friend and I have started but up again but I don't quite get how u would play the second build set, with the draw ability, would be great if there was a few seconds after going over each build showing how u would use/play them optimally.

Something that wasn't mentioned in the video is you can slinger burst out of jumping wide slash which makes repositioning easier in scenarios like stunning a monster already knocked down or they get up and you break their arm or something and immediately knock them down again great video love the guide and builds

I've used the glaive, bow, long sword, great sword and hammer, and i've torn between the Greatsword and Hammer. For me: Hammer hits harder, but the range is a little too short and i feel like I need to be underneath the monster to do anything. Greatsword has a little more range for me but it feels harder to combo and land hits. Im new BTW

I love this video because even though i've been playing a long while , i didn't realise a lot of points! in gs fashion , big damage no matter what. A small couple footnotes:
shoulderbash is hyperarmor not i-frames (i stands for invincibility) since you still take (reduced) damage
the shoulderbash takes the charge level you have into account , the followup jumping slash also does so!
thank you for enjoying the game a lot!

I don't get how you aim the thing. Once I start a combo, I'm locked into a direction with only maybe 30° of aiming with LS. If I'm not lined up where I want to be, I feel like I have to disengage and reposition. Getting used to it is rough coming from a Souls player.

    • @granthefato340

tackle to reset the charge then turn slowly. happened to me when first playing. also remember if you attack, then try to turn after, theres a grace period where you are just locked looking forward. its an intentional design choice on every weapon but super different from souls games where you can attack forward and then just do a 180 instantly wiht another attack.

TCS is the problem in designing monster mechanic
TCS is too slow so they needed to shortcut it to make the monster mechanic faster
GS is easy to use but hard to master.
it needs to really know the monster timing
My solid built is the crit draw built
going for full TCS built is difficult since you need to know how to knock down the monster first
