    The Hawaiian girl is being seriously misleading. Do you know how long it's been since it was illegal to practice certain aspects of traditional Hawaiian culture? Well over a century - before her grandmother was ever born. I'm not saying what happened was right, but her grandmother never experienced what this girl is crying over.

    "My culture is not a costume"
    So are Brazilians wrong when they celebrate the Carnival? Because i know they uses costumes of other countries or cultures to represent something.

    • @hey-fv2gg
      @hey-fv2gg 5 лет назад +12

      Shaggy honestly... Brazilians haven’t figured it out yet as well, it is a really hot topic nowadays, the problem is that: it is incredibly hard to say what is and what isn’t cultural appropriation. After Portugal, England, France, Netherland, Japan and a lot of others countries went to the country, without counting the africans countries and the natives (that is too many to keep counting) and all these people have built families and with time they started marrying each other. There are some cities down south where people still use some traditional European clothes, the buildings themselves look European, if you go to states like São Paulo, there are cities with traditional Japanese temples, festivals and etc, while the north have more African influence and it goes on all over the country, so it is really hard to say if it is cultural appropriation once a lot of these cultures actually moulded the Brazilian culture
      But when comes to the carnival, actually people don’t use a lot of culture based costumes. Yes, there are some, but most of them are actually pop related with a lot of glitter

    • @helolange1132
      @helolange1132 4 года назад +4

      It depends because a lot of the times, they're a way of celebrating other country's cultures that moulded Brazilian culture into what it is, so those are not wrong (in my eyes at least) because they're celebrating not mocking. But the mockery is obviously wrong even though it's not done a lot

    The double standard here is so blatant and horrible. These people have quite literally convinced themselves they are oppressed, justifying the double standard in the process.
    Costumes are not meant to be an 100% accurate/ historical representation of a culture. It’s supposed to be an appreciation and celebration of a certain culture, which should be open to any and all cultures worldwide, because they are beautiful. I loved getting to dress up in a kimono once during the Japanese unit in history when I was younger. I loved flipping through books and learning about different cultures, histories, and traditions.
    Putting on a costume is not offensive. By wearing that kimono, I was not pretending to be Japanese. I was recognizing and appreciating the beauty of their culture. Yet, these people think ripping up their own cultural clothing is less offensive? To me, that looks like nothing but shame.
    It’s funny, really, how they didn’t discuss how white cultures are also turned into costumes and representations. Pilgrims, Romans, Scandinavians, Renaissance, Vikings, etc. are all examples of white cultures that are also celebrated and worn as costumes (And those aren’t 100% accurate either! Guess what? Vikings didn’t have horns on their helmets. But it’s a representation and recognizable part of the culture). If they were really that concerned, why did you not include those?
    Are you telling me next time I go to the Renaissance Faire any person who is not Italian and is dressed as my culture should be yelled at? Are you telling me the little girl who lives down the street shouldn’t have dressed up as Moana for Halloween even though she JUST LOVES THE PRINCESS?
    As someone with strong Italian roots, I do not take offense when other people joke about Italian culture, dress up in Roman togas, or put on our costumes. I wasn’t offended when the Met Gala had a deeply Catholic theme. I love seeing my heritage and culture celebrated by ALL. Ever since I was little, I’ve loved learning about and celebrating cultures worldwide. I found the different styles, traditions, and practices fascinating; And I hate that appreciation is now being called stealing- especially since it apparently only goes one way.

      There's a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. I'm totally okay with the latter what i cant stand is when people think my culture is something funny, something that is only ok if its a costume. if i wore my cultural clothing in america everyone would treat me like a terrorist because i come from a mostly muslim country and our culture has Islamic stuff in it but if someone else wears it as a costume then its suddenlly fine and even funny? thats terrible. that just gives more power to the people who are already hurting and discriminating us. the renaissance fair may not hurt you but when they appropriate our culture it hurts us. it helps the thought that muslims are people you can make fun of it strengthens the thought that the turks are unruly and lazy and barbaric even tho we really are not. it doesnt show that we care a lot about people around us, or that our religion is one full of love or any of the good sides. its just a joke for most of the people. do you know bc of that stigma around us its so much harder for me to get a job in a european country? its much harder for me to win an award bc no one wants to give us one. all of our inventors and scientists and important politicians and historians are erased but of course you tell me how much it hurts the white people. im not saying its right im saying it doesnt hurt you half as much as it hurts us.

      IamK Ezio Auditore da Firenze is the titular assassin in Assassin's Creed 2. In the context of the game, Ezio was the second son of Giovanni Auditore, a wealthy Florentine banker, and lived from the late 1400's to the early 1500's. This character was so popular with both audiences and critics that Ubisoft, the company that developes the Assassin's Creed franchise, decided to extend his story into a trilogy, something that has yet to be done with any other assassin in the entire franchise. If you haven't played Assassin's Creed, I highly recommend it.

      Well, as an italian I will explain to you something: food in Italy is a fucking religion. If you ask an italian the top three reasons why they're proud to be italian, the food will be in the first three places. As for a Mexican girl her clothes have a meaning, for me as an Italian my food has an incredibly and strong meaning. The food for me is able to talk about my culture, about myself, and it's able to give feelings to other people. It's a huuuuge part of our culture.
      And at the same time I don't complain when I heard that the pizza is the most eaten food in the world (and often the pizza is of bad quality 😂 ) ! Culture appropriation? No. Culture appreciation.
      I'm not offended by your comment just because I think it's dumb to be offended by such a stupid thing...? While you probably think it's offensive to wear something that comes from a different culture if you're white. I mean. Dumb.

      I dont like the term cultural apropiation Firstly because If a person is wearing clothes from other cultures has nothing to do with that person making that culture his own. Secondly people that incriminate other people of cultural apropiation...they are judging because they dont know the roots of all the people they are judging (maybe they see a girl with a typical chinesse dress and she looks white but she has family from there or friends).Other point is that cultural is a more general thing that only clothes, culture is Music, typical food...so are they telling me that in order to listen to rap, eat mexican food..I have to belong to that culture..that is racist.
      Im from spain and for me to see a person from other countries admiring mediterranean food, dancing flamenco or other typical things from here.. for me that is beautiful.
      Conclusion, I hate that term Because the beautiful thing about culture is share it.

And I find it odd that some people choice what to get offended & what not to get offended over. I mean the Christmas 🎄 tree 🌳 originated in Germany, so I guess that’s culture appopration and McDonald’s started in America, so I guess that is cultural apporation. So if it’s going to be offensive to put on these sort-of costumes does that mean that the rest of the world has to give back the Christmas Tree to the Germans and nobody can eat a McDonald unless they’re American?

So you're telling me if a 10 year old kid American child wants to be a geisha or a dragon, That they couldn't be one because it would be considered offensive? And its just a costume it doesn't mean all people think like that? I understand that the label that has been put on most cultures can be bad, but honestly how about Instead of attacking children who want to dress up for Halloween, How about you speak up about real problems with culture appropriation..

I’m a human being, not some foreign creature. Taking a beautiful and rich culture and making it into some cheap Halloween costume is super disrespectful and ignorant. I don’t care if someone dresses in traditional Native American dress for Halloween. I think it’s great when people celebrate and respect other cultures, but don’t put on some $20 polyester costume, paint your face red, put a feather in your hair and run around with a tomahawk. That’s just plain rude.

      I honestly agree with you. Like I get it can be offensive, but most of these costumes are for people to wear, not to make fun of others cultures. My school would have party's, and the theme would be a luau. We would wear flowers and coconut bras 😂
      That doesn't mean we are trying to offend anyone, it's just the theme and how we are dressing up. I see no one, I repeat, NO ONE who goes around saying "look at me I'm Hawaiian." They aren't made to offend others. If someone dresses up like a jellyfish, does that mean a jellyfish is going to get offended for dressing up like that? No

Basically, her grandmother wasn't even allowed to practice her Hawaiian culture and only now years later she is allowed to reconnect with her history after so many years all the while some chick X away can do whatever she wants because YOLO Halloween edition. And guess what, she can't even get the culture she's trying to emulate right! She probably just walked down the aisle, saw the picture on the package and thought, "Hey! You and these offended people are not explaining why it's disrespectful. Ya, if you're doing a caricature and mocking them, like 1920's blackface it's disrespectful. But if you're doing an accurate recreation of the clothing from a place of admiration, then it's not disrespectful.
      Arguments about what is respectful and what is not gets muddier when characters like Moana become celebrated heroes across the world.
      Polynesians wanted representation in mainstream culture, now that you have contributed to the greater culture, the characters, the legends are out there and they exist. And people will want to cosplay and emulate their heroes. I don't see how telling non-Polynesians that they shouldn't want to be more like Moana is a good thing.
      At the end of the day, awareness of other cultures expands when outsiders are allowed to participate.

    So should I be offended for every person who dresses up like a ancient Greek? -.-

      And apparently I should be offended whenever somebody dresses up as a Viking or a British Royal Guard.

    No offense but why cant we take scandinavian people into this? we have a strong culture that people wear as costumes (viking helmets with horns etc), but i guess since we're white it doesn't matter 🤷 (also a costume is a costume, as long as it isnt traditional clothing remade into a costume)

    • @caitrionareynolds7817
      @caitrionareynolds7817 6 лет назад +12

      Am Gill but these are all cultures who are oppressed by western countries and also vikings are not a ‘culture’ and neither are they still fighting to exist despite discrimination so there isn’t that double standard if someone wears that costume because they aren’t simultaneously rejecting that very same culture in real life.

      @ENZOxDV9 6 лет назад +62

      Europeans (white people) have a very rich culture, including Scandinavian culture. There is not a single way another non-european culture is oppressed in America, only butthurt SJWs and crazy liberals will go to the lengths of complaining that someone (mainly a white person) is wearing a garment from their own culture when they themselves take things from European culture everyday of their lives and don't say a thing.

      I know this is super random, but as far as I was taught at university the helmets with horns are originated as part of costumes made for an opera (probably the ring cycle by Richard Wagner but I would have to look that up). So if we follow the logic of the argument, only costume designers could be offended by people wearing it.

    • @amgill6388
      @amgill6388 6 лет назад +6

      Kati Mercury Idk if this is meant to me but basically what I'm saying is they took viking helmets and turned them into a costume, aka the costume with horns (ik they originally didnt have horns)

    Let people wear whatever tf they want, why is this offensive? If anything it’s a compliment of your culture as other people like it. If others can’t wear something, that is a FORM OF OPPRESSION. We live in a world of free speech which means we can wear whatever we want, that is the point of freedom to express ourselves, cultural appropriation literally takes that away from the people, it is literally saying a certain race is not allowed to wear something. Sounds familiar? Well... that is actually one of the main forms of segregation used in fascism.
    As the saying goes, those who think they are the least oppressive are always the most oppressive 🤔🤔

    I am Japanese.
    I don't understand what they are upset about.
    If you want to wear a kimono, you can.
    "It's unusual, it's cute, it's weird, I want to imitate an anime character, so I want to wear it!"
    Please feel free to do so for any reason.
    A kimono is a kimono.
    You can wear whatever you like, whether it's cheap or high-end.
    It is just a piece of clothing.
    However, I was offended when Valentino, a clothing brand, once ran an advertisement in which they laid a kimono sash on the ground and walked on it with high heels.
    Kimonos are not carpets.

    A marvel/dc fan can say that Marvel/Dc costumes are offensive
    Any costume can be offensive in the day we live in. A literal piece of wood could be seen as offensive.

      Ammiz haha Norwegians can also say that viking costumes is offensive bug its not, we are proud when People dress up as vikings 😂 then they remembers us 😂 its a completly different story about native americans for example, vikings "stopped existing" 1000s of years ago, natives have been hunted Down, and they stiller are at some places so thats something Else.
      (sry for bad English, im an tweleve year old from Norway 😂)
