I somewhat disagree with your "the upper arm shouldn't be sore" comment. I think that's a technique difference. Some techniques want you to use big muscles like your bicep to get a bigger sound. At the same time if you're chopping out on a flat surface and your upper arms hurt you're probably doing something wrong.
