I remember hearing this the first time and I was taken aback. There is an early version which is different, apparently inspired by a Stevie Wonder concert. But the heavy drumming makes it all! And the breaking bamboo stick which she kept in the mix is telling of her ...

She is a true artist - musically and visually. Some of her stuff may not be mainstream and she hasn’t been afraid to express this at all.
Try ‘army dreamers’ another “off-piste “ song done to a waltz beat

Either I accidentally deleted my comment or YT shadow banned it. Who knows? It was kind of wordy. I don't recall requesting this. But my brain might have a brain cloud on that.
If you kind of want to compare just how Kate uses her voice versus those females attempting to emulate male rock stars and fit in that genre (during this same decade). I'd suggest Pat Benatar's "Promises in the Dark". Kate is unapologetically female. She knew what she was doing vocally maybe didn't necessarily appeal to people. That in modern music the ear was trained to find the male voice more appealing. Men dominated rock, country etc. So females more often molded themselves to the model they established rather than forge their own path. When capable of singing soprano, they used it mostly for a brief highpoint or dramatic effect in a song.
That's not Kate. She will do vocally what best serves her vision for the song and hope people get it. There's a lot of risks she took others weren't taking then. But she was/is uncompromising.
She can sing that soprano soft of much more aggressive like in the backing vocal for "Get Out of My House". And, it's at times narrower like the alto is the bottom of a mountain (broad). Her soprano the top (narrower but mighty).
As this was her first venture into producing her own songs, I think maybe she could have brought the lead vocal up slightly in the mix. The driving percussive piano is on point.
Basically, the song is about the quest for knowledge.. wanting not to do the work to get it. Have it all just "Sat In Your Lap".
Thanks for playing another Kate Bush song. I find something new each time I listen to Kate.

@@DonnieAndD I think Mike may be wondering whether you are applying those terms to Kate or the simply the vocal in the song.
Her persona may lend itself to being more vulnerable in some songs , such as "This Woman's Work". But I would never mistake her English manners in most interviews (or her softer speaking voice in younger interviews) as submissiveness or passivity. She said as much in one interview. Stating to the interviewer she is very strong (don't mistake her as weak).

@@MikeWadeUK21 I think maybe he's referring to her softer voice in the lead vocal. However, in the backing vocal she's using a more colorful soprano. The lead vocal is like sing speak, which to me sounds like maybe trying to mimick someone thinking all of what is in the verses. Just a guess But maybe that is why the softer tone and why the lead vocal seems just a bit low in the overall mix (since the lead is the quietest part of the whole song).

@@MikeWadeUK21 btw I agree. Not being afraid to use her soprano register does not equate to being submissive or passive. There's a world of opera singers out there who use a soprano voice. There is nothing passive or submissive about Kate. She fought to follow her own path every step of her career in a way no other female artist has done until Kate.
