  • In the months before his passing in late October of 2023, Joseph Kim focused on building beautiful memories with his wife and 14-month-old son.
Joseph initially received his diagnosis around the time that he moved into a new home. He was dealing with extreme fatigue and ended up in the emergency room, where doctors discovered that Joseph had a tumor in his stomach. He was diagnosed with signet ring adenocarcinoma and declared stage 4 due to spread in his peritoneum. Unfortunately, Joseph didn't qualify for many targeted therapies, so he had to focus on other types of treatment. He also struggled with ascites (an accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity). He also had malignant adhesions.
Joseph's gastric site was mostly stable, but the peritoneal site was progressing. He couldn't have any surgery, so he opted for palliative chemotherapy. It was hard on his body: Joseph dealt with rough side effects due to the harsh chemicals. Joseph also used a heat tool designed to weaken cancer cells. Further, he took supplements and did vitamin C infusions to help manage his chemotherapy side effects. The infusions were helpful in regaining his strength.
Joseph worked as a psychotherapist, and in his career, he worked with many people who were struggling with grief, depression, and end-of-life emotions. He applied these lessons in his own life as his disease progressed. He believed strongly that reducing and expressing stress in healthy ways is essential for getting better. Joseph also knew about the importance of staying positive and living in the moment.

My Papa Carlyle(moms dad) passed away from stage 4 stomach and esophageal cancer back on June 22, 2010. He passed away just 28 days after diagnosis. I miss him more than I thought possible. He was the only father figure that I have ever known. I was extremely lucky to have him in my life for nearly 22 years. RIP Papa..love your Princess now and forever. Until we meet again. Mark Carlyle August 3, 1939-June 22, 2010.
