    90+ percent of the time, the sensors are killed by letting the gauge "warm up" the sensor before starting the engine. Nobody tells you ( except me ) that "warmed up" means GLOWING ORANGE HOT 1200F. AND that the sensor element, inside, is CERAMIC. So, turning the ignition on and letting it set there for a few seconds, before starting the engine causes the HOT ceramic element to get hit with a rush of cold exhaust ( and, usually some condensation water ). This causes fractures in the ceramic element. The cracks grow on every heat cycle, like windshield cracks. First, the sensor loses accuracy, because of air leaks. Then, eventually, the cracks hit something REALLY important. And, the sensor will just show FULL LEAN, 14.7, or FULL RICH. They usually start out being finicky about EGT.

      so how do I install one without destroying the sensor? I installed one on my 2011 genesis and when I first turned the key it showed 14 then 3 dashes.

    • @lordandprotector
      @lordandprotector 4 года назад +5

      @@awautoworks4426 Just follow the normal installation. The trick is to never leave the ignition on for more than a few seconds before starting the engine, As soon as the WB gets power, it starts heating the sensor. Original equipment ECU WBs know when the engine is running ( Because they are in the ECU ). So, they don't start heating up until after the engine is running. Aftermarket WBs, generally, don't know if the engine is running, or not, until it is too late. If you have left the gauge on, for more than a few seconds, without starting the engine, power it off, for at least 30 seconds, to let the sensor cool down to just scalding hot, before starting. If you see an AFR number, or " - - - -" , the sensor is, generally, already at full temp.

      Turbo Grocery ...or you can wire in a switch so that you can turn it on yourself a short time after starting the engine. I turn mine one around 20 seconds later. This kind of mimics the stock ECU only activating the wideband after exhaust is warm. I wired mine through a relay, which is generally recommended, but put in a simple on/off toggle switch (or you could use a rocker switch).

    AEM Fuel Ratio is the worst. I'm having the same problem in my 1970 Nova SS . AEM sent me a sensor but before they did I had to take a video of me cutting the harness as close to the sensor as possible. I installed the new sensor they sent and what else, the same problem. Now AEM wants me to take a video smashing the gauge before they send a new one. I told them I tested the gauge and it is working properly as per specs. It fails only when sensor is connected to it. It is doing exactly what the last sensor did to it. I asked for a new sensor and the guy said that it's not the sensor because we replaced it with a new one. I told him that just because it's new doesn't mean it is good. As an aircraft engineer with 40 years of experience I trust old parts that are proven to work correctly, then a new part. He told me that he is the expert on this AEM part and he is not supporting me. I told him to go jump in a lake and put the Guage kit on my wall with a note to all customers not to buy or trust anything made by AEM.

    So I just had the same problem. I performed all the same checks as he did and my issue was the O2 SENSOR.

    Just got another one for my other car. The original still works flawlessly. New one leans out whether car is running or not. Hooked the new sensor up to my old gauge and it leaned out almost instantly. The sensor is dead. Probably during shipping, because many delivery drivers drive like maniacs with packages flying everywhere and these bosch lsu 4.9 sensors are very very sensitive to being dropped.

      @@Smeedia I'm tempted to just pick one up at a local parts store to see if it reads. I have a turbo build ive been waiting weeks on a wideband for to do some street tuning. I find it very weird that all 3 of my "known good" sensors are just not working at all. I'm gonna run around town tomorrow and find a relatively cheap lsu 4.9 wideband sensor and make sure it comes with a warranty. I wish there was a physical inspection test you could do on a wideband to see if its bad internally. All 3 of my sensors also failed a "sniff" or rag test. I find it hard to believe all 3 are bad

My son surprised me with a current SBD turbo kit. I’m finishing up my supporting mod purchases before my install myself next month. I’m retired Air Force aircraft mechanic so I’m up to the task. You bought a knock off o2 sensor. Let me guess.....you bought it as a kit off Amazon or something. Pull your o2 sensor probably doesn't have Bosch or any markings on it. AEM didn't sell it as a kit thats why they didn't send you a new o2. These fools will provide a chinese o2 and claim its a bosch and it'll never read right. Buy the right bosch o2 for 120 bucks and stop all the silly business of checking grounds etc.

      That's the sensor that came with the AEM wide band. Ans it is indeed from AEM with their provided sensor. Funny enough thr cheap Amazon sensor I replaced it with went 3 years strong.

      They tend to warranty them out. Have had it happen tk every AEM gauge I've had.
