Indeed. Hope Max can do another interview with Mr Ellinger soon. Amazingly sharp mind for a 90 yr old polymath who still speaks with such remarkable wisdom, clarity and authority.
I am Peter's illustrator for all his semi-autobiographies, including the latest one 'Down Memory Lane'. As much as I am proud of the fact that Peter's lifetime of work has helped shape the Singapore judiciary, I am glad to experience his unique life and perspective through working on his books, seeing through his eyes through my art. His 'sharp as needle' mind has also shaped my way of thinking, and see the world, and Singapore in a broader perspective. Indeed, Singapore has given us a balanced environment where people are not in dire poverty, never living in fear and the society with a given bandwidth of expressing our opinions. To this, I've always believed 'nothing is free in this world', including the right of speech and thought. Looking at the state of the world today, many nations bear the 'costs', consequences to certain ideals expressed. But that said, Singapore is not a perfect nation. It is one that does what is necessary to steer the country to a bright future for her citizens.
More youngsters nowadays should listen to this fine elderly man… it’s a long and arduous journey to get to where we are today! We can be a proud people but we must also be humbled and appreciative of the efforts of those before us! Thanks for this video!
Lovely....a true Singaporean in the heart. Many thanks to this generation that truly helped build our foundation. My deepest gratitude and sharing the sweet memories
Beautiful interview 👍 respect to Mr Ellinger. N tks Max for interviewing him on this platform if not I would not know of such a delightful n intelligent gentleman in Singapore 👏👏👏
This is by far one of the best interviews you have done. Looking forward to more interviews with older individuals who migrated to Singapore as they grew up and witnessed the changes. Thank you Max.
Max, this is one of your best interviews. Prof Ellinger is a gentleman and he said it correctly that expats should not think they are smarter than the locals. I was born in 1962 and growing up, I was always in awe of the white man. Not anymore. I don't think they are superior to me and I am very sure I am not inferior to them. Prof is definitely a treasure and he is certainly a good man. I wish him good health and may he be healthy always. Max, is it possible to have a Part 2 with Prof? I enjoyed this interview very much!
@@misha_360 All men are equal before God. There is a story of 2 guys who walked into an aquarium. One is a king and the other is a peasant. To the fish on the opposite side of the glass wall, it does not care who is king or peasant.
I would love to talk to this gentleman. What he has seen happening in Singapore since 1961 just can’t be put into words. May he have a peaceful and healthy life.
I was born in that year he came over and the interview brought waves of fond memories where life was simple and naive before the age of the Internet and smart phones, and even calculators😅. Really enjoyed this interview!
Omg... I'm Singaporean born n raised n from 2 generations Singaporeans. I was born in 1961 but YES, when he mentioned Koek Lane, my parents took us there when we were 5 or 6 yrs old annually to eat the best satay chelop in Koek Rd. I would whack a whole lot of sticks with the food attached to it even though I was 5 yrs old😂 😂😂. My fav food place but sadly torn down. I resdide in Switzerland today❤♥️... But go back home to Singapore every year for Xmas n new years🎉🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬
Marvellous video! So important to hear authentic views on Singapore's history. It is so widely misunderstood. And very inspiring to hear that he regrets not learning Mandarin, quite understandable as back then there were only textbooks of varying quality and it was not so clear which Chinese to learn and the simplified characters in 1961 had not had such a long history as now. Luckily now with phone apps, youtube etc. it is (marginally) easier. Still very very difficult. Thank you for making this amazing video!
very good vid with many insights even for today younger generation of Singaporean, we welcome all foreigners who are like this 90 year old man who is full of wisdom and understanding. God Bless You!
*Always great to hear from experienced people. If youngsters implement their passion along with these experiences from old people, you guys gonna awesome* 🔥
very true and candid indeed. speak to the bottom of the heart of many people who dun want to express it and living in denial. singapore not as bad as what many people constantly been talking
@@chaotiongsai I disagree. Life is definitely much better under LHL. I love LKY but I love LHL more. LKY laid a solid good foundation but LHL is the current builder and architect of today Singapore 🇸🇬❤️. When LKY stepped down as the PM, our reserves was about 200 billion but now Singapore’s reserves stands at 1 trillion, higher than Malaysia and Indonesia combined...this is the success of Singapore. LKY was a great leader, but fugal and thrifty, who was hard on Singapore as he was hard on himself. He would wear the same clothes for years, lived a spartan lifestyle in a humble home with furniture as old as himself. He saved and hoarded for the country, insisted on building up our GDP to make Singapore rich. After his passing, LHL immediately introduces all kinds of monetary aids for all citizens; the Pioneer and Merdeka schemes, CHAS, healthcare subsidies, student grants, all kinds of HDB’s housing grants to the newly weds, singles, first time buyers; GST vouches, Household Support Package and CDC Vouchers for low income earners....all these monetary aids were unheard of in LKY’s days but they are available now to all citizens . Today’s Singapore citizens enjoy a more comfortable and wealthier lifestyle, all thanks to LHL.
Singapore is lucky to have LKY and LHL , both father and son combined have made Singapore so successful. As Singaporeans, we should be eternally grateful to them...
He is probably more Singaporean than many of us as he is here before many of us were born in Singapore. He is indeed very sharp for someone at age 90. He is like Henry Kissinger.
Such a foreigner , Singaporeans are honoured to welcome as PR or citizen , he sincerely loves Singapore and is a credit to the country but not just anyone who wants PR for the job , a better lifestyle subsidies by his / her employer but who will flee when times are bad …
I agree with the gentleman . I arrived in SG in 1967 .. I also saw the old SG and what he says is really very true. SG is a good place to live and we can choose a way of life not so expensive .
Younger singaporean could learnt something from Mr. Ellinger and be proud of their country rather than complaining about everything. No country is perfect and yet this little island who has nothing and unwanted has become such a well developed country. Look no further, the grass is quite green here. I love Singapore 🇸🇬
The younger generation should learn to appreciate how much the first generation of Singaporeans worked hard to ensure most of a roof over their heads and sufficient food to feed everyone. Be proud of your ancestors and carry on their good work.
Agree with you two totally . The cost of leaving Spore for a larger house ,natural and freedom of speech ? But family unity, respect for elders, disciplined work ethic, moral integrity and multicultural cohesion are some values that outweigh many other material comfort and benefits .😊
i had such fond memories of the pasar malam! I was only 6-7 but i loved walking and walking and looking at stall after stall. and when they stopped the pasar malam at orchard road i was a little sad.
Correction. The MRT was spearheaded by then president Ong Teng Cheong. And he met with great resistance from the party including LKY , Tony Tan and Goh Keng Swee. But he persisted and soldiered on for what he believed was essential for Singapore’s development and progress. I cannot imagine a Singapore without the MRT today , therefore it is important that we should credit the right person for his vision , persistence and courage.
What a gem of an interview. I wished it was longer
No worries , there will be always Part 2 down the road...

You will have to buy his book then 😂😂😂

Agree! Now must look for that book
He reminds me of the late LKY, his mind is still sharp like a knife! Formidable.

He was a law prof!
I lived in Singapore from 2010-2017, and was a journalist then. I regret not getting to know or meet him.
Those experiences he has shared are as valuable as gold!! Thanks for capturing. I would love to see more of such content from an elderly person.

What a beautiful interview.Singapore's golden era was 1964 till 1984.
I would say it is the 1987 to 1999. Once LHL came on, SG went downhill irreversibly.
