This video was AI colored and enhanced. Two AI tools were used:
1) Topaz Video Enhance AI. The software provides AI based solution for enhancing the resolution of (low quality) videos. I used this tool to increase the resolution from the original 480*360 to 960*720, i.e. HD quality. The effect of the tool is beyond amazing and Topaz Lab offers free trial (for the first 30 days I guess). You can find more details and download the software here: topazlabs.com/video-enhance-ai/
2) Open source AI black and white video coloring solution. I used Deoldify. You can find the details on github here: github.com/jantic/DeOldify. You could run Deoldify with Python on your own PC (which needs quite some efforts to set up the correct local environment and debugging), or simply run it on Google’s cloud based machine learning environment Colab. You just need a google account to access Colab, it is virtually free. The Deoldify python code for Colab is here: colab.research.google.com/git...
The original black and white 480*360 footage “Singapore - Crossroads of the East 1938” can be found here: • Singapore - Crossroads... . The film was directed by André de la Varre, in association with Paul Devlin. Please note the colors rendered in the enhanced video should not be treated as the true historical colors, but a best guess by the AI algorithm.
To find the exact location of the places in the footage is sometimes not easy, however I got much help from an interesting website which lists out locations of scenes from films shot in Singapore: sgfilmlocations.com/2014/08/1...
Singapore NLB’s historical newspaper search also helped me in finding a particular shop’s (星光公司) exact location back in 1930s: eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspap...
I also referenced the historical Singapore maps which can be located here: libmaps.nus.edu.sg/

I'm very happy you shared this, I've always wanted to see how Singapore looks like on street level (the people, buildings etc) during the time of my grandparents
Its still nice to see that during the 30s some architectual buildings are still standing the same today which symbolises the history behind it. 👍👍
I love Singapore. I believe Singapore is for everyone! Regardless of skin colour if you trust in its values, rules and power. God bless.
I'm Malaysian but my late grandfather was born in Singapore in 1927. He would had been a child back then living peacefully with his parents and numerous siblings before the Japanese occupation. It feels so surreal and poignant seeing the Singapore he lived in that was different yet familiar at the same time.
Stunning and beautiful. Surreal to see and recognize some of those buildings and landmarks that are still around today
It is really unbelievable to be able to see the Singapore of my parents' time.

Indeed there is still racism in Singapore today. Gweilo, Ang Mo etc..
Feel sorry for the people in the video who would be alive for another 10 years.
They and the country will go thru the darkest of times under the Japanese occupation.
Because of that, people of that era who made it thru are some of the toughest humans who will ever grace the land.
I was moved to hear that Singapore stationed modern aircraft and had the finest aerodrome in the East, the fine troops... How little they understood.

A rickshaw puller's life must have been hard. And very short, given the climate, and the strenuousness of the work.
People back in the days are tough as steel; something lacking in the generation these days who has everything gifted to them since birth-fruits bore by the labour of others
James Francis Warren, Rickshaw Coolie: A People's History of Singapore (1986; 2003 reprint) tackles this subject. From the book cover: 'Between 1880 and 1930 colonial Singapore attracted tens of thousands of Chinese immigrant laborers, brought to serve its rapidly growing economy. This book chronicles the vast movement of coolies between China and the Nanyang, and their efforts to survive in colonial Singapore. Focusing in on one particular occupation, of rickshaw coolie, this study unveils the devastating poverty of the Chinese sojourner in the colonial city, the disjunctions between colonial order and the reality of life on the streets. Drawing on a broad range of sources, including Coroner's records overlooked for many years, and making use of the technique of collective biography, this book brings to life the texture of experience, the ironies and - often - the despair of the laborers of urban Singapore. In the years since its original publication in 1986, Rickshaw Coolie has become an inspiration to those seeking to come to grips with Singapore's past.'

Singapore is indeed a remarkable country
Great to see how Singapore was already perfectly built back then by the British and they left because of Japanese. If it were Dutch or other colonial powers, it would be a slump. British build something to lasts, and it’s testament of the British empire success during these periods.
Exactly. Like Hong Kong was.
The worst is the USA - every country that they invade and occupy they leave it in smithereens and destruction. At least the Portuguese and Spanish built beautiful buildings, schools, universities, libraries, theatres and architecture.

Leg power!! You see those rickshaw pullers are all running and pulling loaded rickshaws in barefeet!! road sweepers and other laborers also walk barefoot on the streets! The music is so cartoon. Awesome video!
These are the people who gave rise to the invention of Singapore "Bak Kut Teh" by the "enterprising" Teochews.(These people are plain smart). Early days, pig bones were discarded after the butchers had stripped them of the meat. So early BKT don't have meat, boiled for hours, throw in lots of garlic, pepper, salt. And voila, you have Bak Kut Soup, served with rice and Chinese tea (Teh) and a black soya sauce dip. Better than red bull (also invented by Thai Teochews).
Goodness, the rickshaw pullers go about their work barefoot on burning tarmacs, ditto the road sweepers, ditto the coolies by the S'pore river... very hard lives these people to say the least.

i wud so love to see a side by side comparison
The opportunities, status and lives of the Western colonialists were indeed so good if not luxurious compared to their home country. Notice the near absence of natives or locals in these exclusive enclaves, clubhouses, hotels, and swimming pools. Devoted Chinese servants like Amahs were only allowed to tend to the children while their parents bask under the glorious sun . Still a good video as a reminder of how far Singapore has changed and progressed. Yet in other areas, things have not quite changed, for example our modern day equivalent of these Amahs and servants are like the maids and foreign workers whom we should be so grateful for.

This provides a fascinating look into Singapore's past! A beautiful city! The commentary reflects the self-congratulatory prejudices and naive over-confidence of the English of the time. So confident of European superiority! Thankfully, on that score, at least, times have changed for the better.
And would it all exist today if the British & Europeans had nt gone there?
There is a touch of bigotry in your unpleasant comment.
@@lynnecromack4933 Look instead at the racism and unconscious bigotry of the self-congratulatory commentary. The visuals of the white man playing golf while others work adds to the unpleasantness.
@@lynnecromack4933 Would Singapore exist as it does today without settlement by Orang Laut, Malays, Chinese and Tamils? Probably not. Singapore's remarkable success has many causes; British settlement is only part of its story. Within a few decades of independence from Britain, Singapore's per capita wealth and income exceeded that of its former coloniser. What role did White men playing golf have in that success?
@@JohnThomas White men Playing Golf ?? Wow, Quite the bigot are nt you? The first gold course opened in 1904 in keppel. So what did the 'white man' do before all this? Build the place maybe ??
And would the British have come to Singapore if not for the opportunity to build economic wealth for their own country and to exploit human and economic resources, and to exercise political domination? British colonialism has helped built the economic foundations of early Singapore, but it's definitely not the be all and end all.
