It’s weird to have a mainly 3d company take over an amazing 2D one
Regardless one of the main issues lie in the fact that Lego failed to announce this to the community before hand. A lot Of the people who watch the show are neurodivergent. And for me this sudden change in studio and style, without any warning at all has absolutely half ruined the show for me. I will always love the show. However this sudden change is not something I take to lightly. The dislike to this new style is justified and understandable. What isn’t is how excessive the hate is getting. Even like you said, they are used to 3D rigging. But this is not a show that should be rigged. There are shows such as my little pony and bluey which work incredibly well for rigging because that is what they were going for. However one of the unique aspects of lego monkie kid was the hand drawn animation. It was designed to be hand drawn. Not rigged. I Have no doubt it will get better as it goes along, but at the moment it is an inconsistent, flat, choppy, poorly made, mess. /nm
It’s like when Disney tried to make Wish good. There were massive aspects they missed when trying to create wish even I would know never to miss. When creating an old looking film roughness is a massive aspect to that. Paper drawn animations mixed with digital animations can be done beautifully (wolf walkers) and would’ve made the film look so much better. I’m just praying that unlike Disneys “wish”, Lego Monkie kid will not have a drop in quality when looking at aspects such as the writing and voice acting.

As I was stating before is that lmk will never go back to traditional and this new company will only be using 2D rigs which as u see in the trailer looks lifeless and dead, and a lot of things are missing or makes it look worse than s1

they do both man 2d and 3d they just need time to adjust no one's going to nail it on their first try its the same thing that happened with flying bark during the first season everyone clowned on them till eventually they got the hang of it besides this studio has made pretty good 2d animation we just gotta trust them on this

Sarah Harper confirmed Flying Bark didn't work on S5, and won't be working on the show going forward. I recommend spreading the word online and raising a stink about it, because I can seriously see a lot of people dropping the show if this is how it looks going forward

OK HOLD UP, I HOPE THIS COMMENT DOESN'T GET LOST:
So, you said Wildbrain is COLLABING with Flying Bark? As an animator, I have a *possibly slightly* educated theory (TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT, BUT I THINK THIS IS PLAUSIBLE):
SO, Flying Bark is the studio that animated seasons 1-4 of Monkie Kid. And Wildbrain is the studio that started animating Ninjago since season 11. I watched the trailer, and that animation is DEFINITELY keyed instead of frame-by-frame. Keyed animation is actually a style (like Bluey, Wild Kratts, etc.), BUT, coming off of the detailed frame-by-frame animation of seasons 1-4, this style looks like crap in comparison.
You can see that by the actual ART STYLE of the trailer, it looks the same. The character designs and art style at its core haven't changed if you look at the way the characters and backgrounds are drawn. So my theory is that they kept Flying Bark for the actual ART of the series, (to keep it continuous throughout the seasons) but left the animation up to Wildbrain. Possibly because of budget, they scrapped frame-by-frame (which takes a LOT more time and a LOT more animators) and replaced it by the cheaper (money-wise, at least) keyed animation. And thus you have the pain of Ninjago fans from season 11.
Hope this isn’t true and go back to flying bark animating too like they usually done.
That animation is great.
Also, I would find it kind of weird to get a less good animated show after Season 5 is one of the longest we have had to wait for a LMK season.
I don’t mind waiting, but it would be nice if the quality at least stayed the same and/or got better.
And I know animation can be very expensive, but this is LEGO.
Saying that, I’m still really excited for S5.
I just hope this theory on animation styles changes and animators changes isn’t true or is only temporarily true.

Yeah I just watched the trailer for myself, and I'm gonna be honest it looks like crap. Even in comparison to other rigged shows- The Owl House and Moon Girl look way better than this. I really, truly hope this is just for the trailers and Flying Bark is doing the actual animation, but that's probably just cope tbh. It sucks because the animation was a major reason the show got so popular in the first place, and I'd be totally willing to wait as long as it takes for S5 to look as crisp as the first 4 seasons

I have been overwhelmed with all sorts of emotions since the release of the trailer, because the unique feature of this series was its unique frame-by-frame animation. This is what made it among other Lego cartoons - special, alive, dynamic. And the fandom's outrage is justified. Without explanations and prefaces, it was a mistake to announce this news so abruptly. After all, the animators put all their love and soul into this project and such a finale is stunning. We waited a year for season 5, because it was also the last, ending this story. (Thanks for keeping the original writers). And we got... this. I cannot disrespect their choice, but I also cannot say that I immediately accept this decision.
I don't believe the problem is a busy schedule. Like.. what? How many years have you put effort into this project to abandon it like this? Besides, the fandom has been waiting patiently all this time, and if they needed more time, everyone would have realized it. Around the fall, someone on behalf of the studio said that they were almost finished with season 5.

@LusiaEspheda Somewhat same. I started gaining interest on the show around the end of August to September last year in 2023 and suddenly became a part of the LMK fandom since. But seriously, it DID feel like I'd have to wait for AGES until Season 5 would come out.

To be fair, when WildBrain animated Dragons Rising, they’ve been working on 3D animation long enough to improve their animation quality. The same could be said about Flying Bark and Monkie Kid. They’ve improved very well in one animation style that going from 3D to 2D animation can be a bit of a challenge, especially to make it look *exactly* like the other studio’s work. I’ve accepted that the style is going to be different and I’m certain that it will only get better if we give them some time ❤

I think one reason there is a lot of backlash is the fact that a lot of people started watching lmk because of the amazing animation of prior seasons. I really hope that this is not finalized because it looks clunky and a lot of the proportions are really strange.
24/5/15 edit: I really hope no one gives up lmk due to the studio switch and the TRAILER, the animation will most likely improve and we need to give the new studio a chance. They have made some great 2D animation (Cough cough Carman Sandiego reboot cough cough) and were likely rushed due to Lego being the multi-billion dollar company it is and and the rampant fans.
Personally, I am hopeful for the future of Lmk and I think we just need to be patient

Yeah, most of us are the type to come for the animation and stay for the story. If they take out what’s drawing us in then where will the appeal for new viewers come from? Of course some people will still be intrigued but not as huge of a fresh crowd they’ve had before.

I don’t hate Wildbrain, but Flying Bark is great, and they have always animated LMK, so I hope they keep doing so for S5 and/or hopefully future seasons.
Fr, Flying Bark is what drew a ton of fans to the show, including me. It would be a huge downgrade if they switched studios.
I swear if this is the final product I’m going to find the executive who approved this and beat them with a hammer. It’s not that the animation is bad but the quality between season 4 and 5 is not even night and day it’s an entirely separate reality at this point. You can’t just go from the season 4 finale to that trailer. It looks like a scratch game animation, not even flash. Cause MLP was animated with flash and that show looked fucking great. Not to mention if wildbrain is capable of making good animation (With Ninjago and I think that Carmen Sandiago reboot) then what the actual hell is this trailer and if this is anywhere close to the final product than what the hell were they thinking
OK I know it’s stupid to hate on the TRAILER art style and stuff and like yeah I’ve heard a new studio picked up lmk and it’s stupid to hate the animation quality but like?? The animation and art style quality really matters and a show like lmk stuck out to so many people because the art style and animation style was INSANELY good. It’s a hard style to capture I get it, but if your audience isn’t vibing with the style not as many people will connect to your show. It’s super disheartening but in lmk s5 we trust, still excited and still watching it despite the slight downgrade

The animation of the next season seemed a bit slow and underwhelming to me from the trailer, but i am going to hold out until the actual episodes drop.
This could be something similar to what happened wuth the first sonic movie so I am holding out hope.

Maybe something went a little bit wrong because... Wildbrain studios specialize in 3d animation more? I honestly don't know if they worked once on 2d animation at all so i can't say much about it, but after seeing this premiere, maybe they just don't have much skills in 2d animation sphere. I think that's the case why the animation looks odd and not on the same quality level as before. (Though it's still looks pretty good but... Still disappointing, honestly.)
Edit 1: one guy said that Wildbrain is working on such things as trailers and commercials, so Flying Bark could focus on production of the main series more. I don't how much is it true, but it better be...😰

Now I will miss flying bark production they did an excellent job animating Monkie Kid seasons 1-4 and there specials but we should give Wild Brain a chance like Ninjago fans did with season 11 I believe they will cook.

The most probable reason as to WHY Wildbrain is animating this season as opposed to Flying Bark is because LEGO wanted it to line up with the theme's 5th anniversary, considering how big it is in China.
Wildbrain made Carmen Sandiego on Netflix, which is was 2D animated
In terms of quality, wildbrain didn't do to good on ninjago until Dragons Rising, but when it comes to action, seasons 11-15 were the best.
Also, Monkie Kid's animation is probably lacking because wildbrain has been doing more 3D than 2D as of recent. (I think the last 2D thing they worked on was My Little Pony 😳)

Monkie Kid is a theme I respect but never got into because I can never find the sets anywhere, or the show for that matter. I have no idea where to watch it

There are some channels that have the peepisodes either in parts or in full, but it is difficult to find them.
Same here, I tried to search MK in my language( spanish) and found s1, not s2 or s3:( at least I found the english episodes
And the minifigures look very good, I want them but I don't know a place where I can buy them.

Idk if this is just a neurodivergent thing but the sudden change in animation studio + style really bothers me to the point it’s half ruining the entire show for me-
It’s inconsistent, it’s flat, it’s rigged, it’s a completetly different studio, the only good thing is it’s the same voice actors and writers- Lego should’ve told us that they were changing studios before releasing a trailer this bad- I get that the studio is still learning 2D rigging but part of what made Lego Monkie kid unique WAS the hand drawn animation. And now that’s being ruined all because they changed studios. The only reason Lego Monkie kid is more successful then shows such as Lego ninjago is BECAUSE of the hand drawn animation. It was consistent ever since season 2-4 and the sudden change really bothers me know
wildbrain never should have came on the scene because their primary animation is in 3D models. they did do some shots in season 11 but they looked so god awful😭

Already made some comments, just hoping S5 and hopefully future seasons is just good, if not better than previous seasons, story, characters, world building, development, etc.-wise. And hopefully art and animation-wise too.
I have been really excited and eagerly waiting more LMK, so I want it to keep being great and keep getting better.
And like I said in previous replies, I do still hope Flying Bark are the main animators and that the change in animation/animation style is not actualky a thing and/or something like that. Or is at least temporary.
Flying Bark are great animators, and both the art and animation and animation style are big draws
(though, not the only draws. But like, like ROTTMNT who flying bark also worked, that ha other big draws. The art style and animation was also still a big draw, so I just want LMK to keep it, like ROTTMNT did.
Tho tbf, LMK has more seasons currently - I still try to keep hope for more ROTTMNT despite how low; though I’m also happy w/ what we got -, but still),
so I’m hoping they are kept and it/they are kept.
Wildbrain is doing great for Ninjago, but they aren’t Flying Bark who has been animating LMK since the beginning. And like someone said they have more expertise in 3D than 2D. Like maybe WB wioukd keep on improving in 2D for LMK, and maybe even use those improvements for 2D stuff in Ninjago.
But still, I want Flying Bark to stay on LMK and WB with Ninjago. And for the animation and art style to kept and/or even improved on in LMK. Like how Ninjago: DR has been improving in a lot of ways art and/or animation style.
Also like I said WB just seems to know .3D more, and FB seems to know 2D more. And LMK is 2D show. So yeah.
Saying that, I wouldn’t more cool, hopefully good LEGO crossovers. As a fan of multiple themes. I.e. originally a Ninjago fan, then started being a fan of LMK and DreamZZZ. And etc. I just don’t want these potential crossovers to be at the cost of the shows. Still, I do like the idea of crossovers.
Also yeah, sometimes there can be tension between the fandoms. Honestly, as a fan of Ninjago, LMK, and DreamZZZ; I personally just want them all to get love and support and to be great and/or stay great and/or to keep getting better and better.
So the fandoms getting along more would be cool. I wish a thing to bring the LMK and Ninjago fandoms wasn’t (potentially. I’m trying to be hopeful here) something like this.
Saying all that, I am going to keep in hoping for LMK Season 5 to be great. Same with Ninjago DR Season 2 Part 2 (which is probably not too far off), and DreamZZZ Season 2; that comes out this month. I’m excited for more of all 3 of these series and/or themes, and I hope they are all great.
It’s not the fault of the writers or the animators. The higher ups just wanted to limit everything their way to save money do to being impatient with the animators hard work

If Wildbrain would specialise in 2d animation as in 3d animation that would be okay, but judging by the premiere, they're not.
Wildbrain knows working with 3D, but no much with 2D. Even this is better than the anime version episodes of Ninjago that they made

i stopped watching lego ninjago at s16 for obvious reasons (i am still in pain when i think about that season) and then i stumbled over lmk. if lmk goes the same way as lego ninjago s16 this studio will be a sign for me that i should stop watching the show as soon as they get involved if i want my last memories of it to be good ones.

The trailer, as far as I can tell, is official since it was posted by the official LEGO account on Bilibili. My theory on why it's not as good as you say their Ninjago stuff is, is because they may be more used to animating in 3D rather than 2D. That and the fact that the fans were getting impatient, so maybe it was a bit rushed.
I just hope they dont pull out of doing rise of tmnt (ofcourse if they even consider doing more of it).
Anyways, tanner, if you are reading this then i really recommend continuing it! The last season was really good
I know this leaves a bitter taste in people's mouths, and mine too, but honestly, I'm just glad we're getting a 5th season. I would've waited for years for it to be animated by Flying Bark, but it's something to get used to. I'm very glad that it's the final season, that has that change, bcs the majority of the show has that astonishing animation.

I blame Lego for this. Wildbrain is mostly a 3d animator, yes they also made 2d animations but there not used to animating 2d fights and stuff.

Nobody yelling at the animators. But the executives decision to replace the main studio, especially replacing it with a studio that don't specialize in 2D animation. Wildbrain is good, but for 3D.

I waited almost a year and the longer I wait the more I tell myself it’s going to be so good because of how long it’s taking and then I saw the trailer and as a lmk fan and a ninjago fan I went disappointed (if it actually releases like this I’ll take it but I won’t be fully satisfied)
Okay I LOVE lmk and at this point I’ve come to live with the fact that the animation isn’t going to be what it used to be. What I AM worried about is where the hell this storyline is going!! LIKE OKAY- I loooove Ninjago I rewatched the entire thing just recently to have an idea of what it was about again bc I miss the show a lot. HOWEVER I noticed a lot of the series was just recycling villains or spawning new ones out of thin air. Which is exactly what I’m afraid of happening to Lmk. The fact that we didn’t see so much of a GLANCE at Nuwa is what scared me mostly. It’s the fact that everything we saw in the trailer was practically like a whole new show with new villains and everything. I’m scared that it’s gonna pull a ninjago and completely 180 everything we knew from previous seasons. What the story line has going so far from s 1-4 for lmk is AWESOME they did amazing!! LBD, Azure, The dbk family- GRADE A VILLAINS….So tell me who the fuck centipede man is and the old ass man we assume is related to Nezha- I am putting SO. MUCH. FAITH. into the lmk team with this one. When I’d found out Redson was only gonna be in ONE episode the whole season I was already distraught. So when I saw the trailer I was SHAKING AND QUAKING- ….Ahem- anyways I am praying s5 will be a good one, I’m still rlly scared tho. Sorry for the rant-
