The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This song hit Number 1 on December 27, 1969 making it literally the last Number 1 pop hit of the 60s. Beautiful way to end that decade from a musical point of view.

I think of that often.... I would like to think it was destiny that made it #1, but I'm pretty sure Berry Gordy bought this last #1 hit of the 1960s.

One of the Supremes earlier hits had been to No. 1 in the charts and had dropped a place or two but after an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show went back to No. 1. The increased sales were at the time attributed to their appearance on the show. Sorry I can’t remember the song.

Thank you Ed Sullivan for helping to propel great music. I remember that the local record store on Monday would be sold out of whatever artist that ES had on his show the day before.
No streaming, no music on demand, etc. And that’s how it was. Back then the music business was exciting. It was fresh. You had to “earn” the records you got. That made it even more special.
Today we’re left with memories of those times. Thank God for that.

I know Diana Ross spoke with Ed, but was there anything else that night about their LAST TV appearance together? OMGeez from 1964-1969 HOW MANY TV appearances did they make???? Did they do any other skits or discussions that night in regular clothes?
