Can’t believe it’s been over 6 years since this game came out. It’s still my number one game on the 3DS and one of my favorite Mario titles ever released.
The game would look just like super Mario 3d world if it was remastered why not give super Mario 3d world a dlc to give the adventure of 3d land for 10 dollars
on the wii u you can chose to play as mario, luigi, peach, and toad. each one has advantages and disadvantages to the others, noticing your icon i think you'd like to know toad is the fastest Xp
If Nintendo did remake Sunshine or Galaxy, they would only chose Sunshine (Galaxy is already near perfect and not too old and doesn't need to be remade). Plus, it would be on the Wii U. 3DS hardware just can't handle Sunshine's engine and ESPECIALLY can't handle Galaxy's. The way it could maybe handle them is if the framerate was chopped in half and the graphics were super downgraded. Sunshine would look gorgeous in HD running at 60fps.
@Elan Kelev Airglow I can play it smoothly but it seems like cashes don't work well because whenever it loads something new it stutters a tiny even if it's loaded that thing many times before. not really a problem though it just makes it feel slightly unpolished compared to dolphin
I played this game. Just 100% it. As the reviewer said, don't get fooled with the first 8 worlds, they're fir children. The 8 special worlds are what you're looking for if you need something challenging. Getting the three medals is hard. You can increase the difficulty drastically by not using the tanuki suit. As for the 3D effect, i didn't need it, makes me dizzy so I played the game without it and it was just fine.
I have one thing to say. Your right playing the game without the tanooki suit is hard. I think people are calling the game easy because of the tanooki suit. The tanooki suit is broken.
disklosr Yeah I agree. When I playef through the first eight worlds I was like "eh, this game is decent" but when I took on the Special Worlds and Star Medals the fun had really begun

The bart's mom had no clue what she wanted for it so she said ummmm how bout a dolla lol. They were rich you could tell not just by the mansion they had but by the 2 Mercedes parked in their driveway
I share a copy of this game with my roommate and for my first playthrough I wasn't overly excited. It took me until I started to collect all golden coins to finally grasp how genious some of the levels are build. This truly is a must-own title. We also do own 3D world (perhaps my most favorite coop platformer of all time) but owning 3D World doesn't mean you don't need 3D Land anymore. Wished all of Nintendo's game were made with this much care and love nowadays.
@mariosmashfann no not broken, that`s a phenomena known as ghosting. The 3ds displays 2 slightly different images of a scene for the 3d and uses a filter to seperate those images to the appropriate eye. This ghosting is probably due a overlooked design flaw in the filter that will probably be fixed in later models. But look on the bright side, at least it`s not the red ring of death.
I may be (very) late for the party but boy am I enjoying this game! It's PERFECT for bus/train journeys - the levels are short and simple yet great fun to play on the go! Hope they make a sequel! I also like the fact that you can let the "wings" send you to the end-of-level flagpole when things get too frustrating. To me, games are supposed to be fun, so the "too easy" critique is actually a positive trait for me.
@JohnnyCQC Features don't mean power. The Wii has a CPU of 730 Mhz, 3DS 512 Mhz. To compare 3D Land to Galaxy (they both came within a year after the release of the system): The character model of Mario/Luigi in Galaxy contains ~5000 triangles. 3D Land's model got ~1500. The 3DS has to render twice for 3D, but Galaxy is 60fps and 3D Land 30fps, so that compansates each other. My conclusion: 3DS has specs between GCN and Wii but because of the 3D the 3DS Games have less poly's than the Wii/GCN.
@grkpektis I do not entirely agree, it is true Nintendo jumped on with giving people the ability to play through levels invincible, or even like in DKC-Returns on the wii, have the game play itself through the level, usually it will not reward you full completion using the superguide. but, it gives you something to do instead of failing continuously, i remember the merciless mine cart levels from the first donkey kong returns. not to mention that there was 1 checkpoint per level selection map.
When I had 3D land at first I never had acccess to the internet so I didn’t know what a tanouki leaf is me my brother and my cousin used to call it tail whack
challenge accepted, but: 1) do you get something special for beating all the leves with both mario and luigi? 2) do you also get something special for having all the golden flags? just like in new super mario bros DS, do you get like stars on your file or something?
Honestly I prefer this game over 3D World. That’s just my opinion though, if you like 3D World, I can totally understand why, but I just feel like this one was so much better.

Anyone know by chance?
What do they mean by, "a slow start"? I was having fun for the entire game including the beginning. What part of it felt slow? They put you right into the action within the first minute.
An amazing game that really shows what the 3DS hardware can do and offers a beefier experience than you'd expect. My only gripe is that the bosses get rehashed a lot. Other than that, 3D platforming gold!
Crash Bandicoot The new Mario Kart game for the Wii U disagrees with you. Haha, just kidding. Does look pretty good though; that and the new Zelda game will make me get a Wii U :)
I am currently working through Special World 4, so far this has been the worst and most frustrating 3D Mario game I have ever played. I have played many 3D Super Mario games: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario Galaxy. Those were really good 3D Mario games(although I think he is suited better in 2D), but as far as Super Mario 3D Land.... just disappointing. It's a shame, cause I really want to enjoy this game.
***** I did, it did get a little more intersting, but even then it still wasn't hard. Not to mention that they throw hunderds of lives at you. But again, it was a good game, I just didn't think it was anything special
Well Mario has always been like that. Unless we are talking about the original NES game and it's japan exclusive sequel, all Mario games are easy with a few tricky levels for more skilled players.
But even then, the supposed harder levels of this game are easier than the easiest levels of SMB1, SMB2 usa, SMB3 or Super Mario world =/ I know, it's probably intended for a younger audience, but even still, you can't deny that the game is really easy
TheGrimReaper0011 I think you are exaggerating a bit. The challenge worlds are not that difficult, true, SMW had way more challenging levels. But it's not THAT easy either, I think. Have you played any of those games you mentioned recently? They're not that difficult too, specially SMB3.
I disagree, but that's your choice I found the game just too easy I always think this though : I'd rather have a fun, easy game than a game so difficult it's frustrating Mario Bros 2 (or the lost levels) comes to mind.
I just bought this yesterday and have blasted through to world 7. I really hope she isn't kidding when she says it'll get more challenging. Though that aside its a great game. Nothing that hasn't been done in a mario game before, but meh I just wanted more mario so I'm happy. Unfortunately, some sections can be a bit tough to play without the 3D effect enabled, if like me you are incapable of seeing in stereoscopic 3D, you have to be very vigilant to spot where 3D tricks are being employed.
As soon as i played the first level. I knew this was gonna be a special game. But more importantly, i got that old mario feeling that that the levels are classic and are endlessly fun to play over and over. Meanin u wont want to trade in this game ever because its a modern day classic. My only fear was that it would be a short ride but im happy to say its the complete package. I havent been the biggest fan of nintendo for awhile now but this game single handedly brought back some hope for me.
I personally think this review is 100% true. The first 8 worlds took me less than a day to beat, but then 8 special worlds open that took me a month to beat.
That was actually one of their starting ideas when they were throwing around ideas for new Kirby games back in the early 2000s ... eventually they decided to stick to 2D platforming and we got Return to Dreamland for the wii (it had a development cycle of almost 10 years)
I would recommend this one, I downloaded it for free with the XL + Luigi's Mansion promo and was dissapointed with the difficulty of the levels but after unlocking the special worlds I'm very pleased with it
I honestly never found the Special Worlds to be very difficult. For one, most of the levels are identical to the initial game, except that the objects are different.. Two, after getting many 1-UPS from the normal game, it's almost impossible to run out of lives. Three, almost all of the bosses are gone except Dry Bowser, which is just a palette change. Sure, Boom-Boom and Pun-Pun are there a few times, but the way they act is unchanged.
You should get both, but which one first? Depends. SM3DL is a fun little adventure that's twice as long as you'd expect and you'd be surprised at how well it uses the 3D effect. Mario Kart 7 has the same gameplay we've grown to love in Mario Kart and the online is amazing. I'd start with Super Mario 3D Land and then get Mario Kart 7. That's me.
I bought NSMB2 and I absolutely love the game. It being basically the same as NSMB is a point in it's favor - not a point against it. As Mark from Classic Game Room says, "We need more or more of the same". New Super Mario Bros 2 is the second best platform game for the 3DS - the first being SM3D.
Not if you're a kid. But you will have LOTS of fun playing it. I have Mario 3D Land since december from the last year and I have just finished the game completely [spoilers] (all 1100 lives, all star coins, finished every stage with Mario AND Luigi, unlocked the special stage...) [/spoilers] last month. Oh, and I think I can say the last Cosmic Mario stages from World S are literally hardcore. It's a highly recommended game.
HD ads, can take 5 mins or more to stutter through for slow connections. You clearly missed the HD part of my comment. we should be able to change the quality or have a preset for no HD ads. And no, without ads we wouldnt necessarily need to pay for youtube, although a potentiality. But there would certainly be less incentive for Tubers to make great vids
i finished the first 8 worlds with 167 lives, it is a laugh indeed, however, the special worlds are not that hard either, the only thing i find difficult is to get a good final time on the castle stages
Takes 20 hours to collect all the star coins. I found some star coins took some searching. You get an extra ultra hard level if you beat it all with both Mario and Luigi, get the golden flag on all levels, and of course all the star coins. The special worlds are harder than many games out there, and, although its initial easiness is a disappointing, I found the special levels lots of fun. Overall a fresh and interesting direction for mario and I look forward to mario 3d world.
actually john, there is a demo. or was atleast. back in 2011 any walmart or gamestop looking to show off the 3ds, usually had super mario 3d land up on display, i should know, i must have played the demo like 20 times during my lunch breaks.
Thanks IGN for the recommendation! I really enjoyed it overall. Though i actually find the game slow at the beginning, I also found the normal worlds incredibly short, special world is driving me nuts though with dark mario and a timer at the same time.
I would suggest trying Kid Icarus in the store first. Some people (myself included) can't play it because of the controls. 3D Land, though, is fantastic.
For the first time I actually agree with an IGN reviewer (when it comes to 3ds)! It is definitely worth mentioning that it is VERY reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy, only in handheld form. If you love Super Mario Galaxy, you will love this game. Biggest complaint: Too easy. First eight levels even allow for an invincibility suit AND a p wing if you really suck. The special worlds, however, take those privileges away and require that you put your best game face on.
I don't think slow start has to do anything with the difficulty, but more with how many mechanics are introduced in the first few hours. Just like, for example, every Zelda game has a slow start except for maybe Link to the Past.
I think the short stages are fitting since it's a handheld game. Plus the game has over 80 and there's plenty you have to do in order to get 5 stars. Plenty of replay value. I'll give you the repetitive boss fights though.
@NickyDells573 Say that about Revelations, which uses half of the 3DS' power. They also have to render the game 2 times to make it 3D. And the developers can also use 25% more CPU now too. 3DS can run Crysis too. So if the 3DS didn't use 3D and the devs. use the 25% more power...It would look damn good. Way better than any Vita game.
Oh, you played the demo. That tells you SO much about the overall game's level design and how well the 3D was implemented. I guess you playing the demo is a way better judge than a person who played through the entire game, huh?
@JohnnyCQC it might be more powerful than the wii but it doesn't run as good as the wii. Since 3D tech needs extra power, that extra power over the wii goes to the 3D, not the games. When I got the 3DS some games on the DS looked the same as the 3DS. Except shaders, that stuff is really needed.
You pretty much played through less than half of the game then. There are a total of 16 worlds, the last 8 being fairly challenging. Plus if you beat all the stages with both mario and a luigi, get all the medals, and get to the top of the flag pole at the end of each level you unlock a super challenging level
This game is beasting at the moment having sold 5.14 million units in its first 7 weeks and mariokart 7 as well selling 4.46 million units in its first 5 weeks. Mario we salute you, you are a sales phenomenom.
Tbh, the Special levels after world 8 are still incredibly easy. Whilst slightly more difficult I managed to complete every level as both Mario and Luigi, get all the star coins on every level and the gold flag, world 8 - crown included within a week. A game should last longer than that really...
@TheMustik92 where... the hell... did that come from? He just made a statement of why did nintendo bother even putting lives in this game. The lives in this game are so easy to come by (currently up to 200 something), and any level that has a koopa and a wall can be used for farming lives rather easily.
I agree that more secrets would have definitely made it more challenging, and hence, better. If they make a Mari 3d land 2, that is exactly what they need to do!
@Guitardude8794 a touchscreen on the back is better than one on the front, where you can't see what you're doing and you get finger smudges on the screen.
@Groobie Im actually at world 7 and it has picked up a lot, but I hear after world 8 its incredible. From what I've heard I would definitely keep playing
This was an excellent game, and I was really happy with it, but some of the necassary changes from the classics to prevent power-ups and other game mechanics making the game redundant were either not strong enough, or stupid. The newer version of Raccoon Mario in this game made it extremely easy, even when they remove the ability of flight. You can still skip over major parts of the very short levels. And the Boomerang suit felt like a dumbed-down version of the Fire Flower or older power-ups.
Why did IGN give score with 5 on the back now? they used to giving score like 8.7, 8.8, 9.2, 9.4, 9.7, 9.8, or even 9.9, it seems now they just score it like 8.0, 8.5, 9.0, 9.5

But again, it was a good game, I just didn't think it was anything special
Well Mario has always been like that. Unless we are talking about the original NES game and it's japan exclusive sequel, all Mario games are easy with a few tricky levels for more skilled players.
But even then, the supposed harder levels of this game are easier than the easiest levels of SMB1, SMB2 usa, SMB3 or Super Mario world =/
I know, it's probably intended for a younger audience, but even still, you can't deny that the game is really easy
TheGrimReaper0011 I think you are exaggerating a bit. The challenge worlds are not that difficult, true, SMW had way more challenging levels. But it's not THAT easy either, I think.
Have you played any of those games you mentioned recently? They're not that difficult too, specially SMB3.
I disagree, but that's your choice
I found the game just too easy
I always think this though :
I'd rather have a fun, easy game than a game so difficult it's frustrating
Mario Bros 2 (or the lost levels) comes to mind.
This or new super mario bros 2
This
Ben Iannuzzi no competition, this, new super mario bros 2 is good but pretty basic
Both are meh
Her delivery is the worst.....
She loves Nintendo so much. I'm glad she left IGN to... work for Nintendo.
She did fine
Yeah, she's fine. She has a nice voice.
@Trigger99X ...the 3DS doesn't have the whole "Pops out of the screen", its more of a depth 3D.
No reason to hate on someone just stating their opinion. They weren't trolling or trying to piss you off.
I don't understand what exactly she means by "slow start" at the end
i finished the first 8 worlds with 167 lives, it is a laugh indeed, however, the special worlds are not that hard either, the only thing i find difficult is to get a good final time on the castle stages
I've been in love with this game since it came out in November! I have just beaten Special 8-Crown with Mario and Luigi. My game is totally complete.
actually john, there is a demo. or was atleast. back in 2011 any walmart or gamestop looking to show off the 3ds, usually had super mario 3d land up on display, i should know, i must have played the demo like 20 times during my lunch breaks.
The special worlds, however, take those privileges away and require that you put your best game face on.
isnt thier 8? racoon leaf, tunuki tail, shiny leaf, p-wing, super star, fire flower, propeller cap, boomerang flower, mushroom.
@damandatwin no it's actually hard trying to get all the star coins and maintaining the 30 second time limit as well
9 years ago!? Wow, that’s crazy.
Difficulty is one of many aspects in game design. And did you play the last worlds? They were challenging.
the thing i dont get is your trying to save luigi in the special levels, but you can also play as him
trust me the 8 special worlds are worth it. they are very challenging and makes getting the 5 special stars soo hard
I just love it when Audrey reviews Nintendo games.
IGN literally just doesn’t understand where the game is targeted towards... IT’S FOR KIDS TO BEAT TOO THAT’S WHY IT’S EASY MOST OF THR GAME
I think it's good that a game starts easy and gradually increases difficulty, I'm playing the game right now and I don't see this "slow start" issue
0:00 to skip if any add are on
This game is beasting at the moment having sold 5.14 million units in its first 7 weeks and mariokart 7 as well selling 4.46 million units in its first 5 weeks.
The thumbnail is so sad.
2:33 Um, that wasn't new, it was in Galaxy
That was about the challenge not about the new mechanics
