I wish I saw what you do. A couple of years back Supergrass were practicing and playing festivals, even "Jimmy Kimmel," and were "together." Watching interviews from that time, I got the impression Gaz wasn't as excited by all of that as maybe the others were. Here we see that he's only made another solo record after Supergrass spent the better part of two years promoting themselves. An important part, I think, in those interviews with Supergrass, especially in front of Mick, was when the interview said that Supergrass had been on "indefinite hiatus" since 2009 (IIRC). When the interviewer said that, Gaz quipped back with, "no, we broke up." He played that up for the camera and the interviewer, as if to say, this isn't as important to me as it is my former bandmates. Mick and Robert were left silent. In context, completely tactless to the point of tasteless. I think there's an ego here. No doubt, Gaz is an amazingly talented songwriter. He's chasing a more mature sound than Supergrass had back in the day, obviously. Supergrass was a fun band with a fun sound. Their later albums showed more maturity, but didn't sell as well unfortunately. Gaz's solo work is barely making the Top 10 for a week, and that is with this album. Supergrass peaked, album sells-wise, with I Should Coco at No. 1 and progressively trended down to Diamond Hoo Ha at 19, all very accomplished IMO. So I think this propels Gaz to shy away from "fun" and towards the more mature sound, leaving him separate from Supergrass. Could also be that Supergrass' much better rhythm section isn't ready or willing to fit a more mature approach to music, I don't honestly know. I guess, what I want, is to see the band back together, maybe that leaves me a little biased; maybe a lot. I'd imagine more people want that too. That interview though. For years I thought Mick was the reason the band broke up. That interview made me think Mick was proud of what went down in the Here Come The Drones sessions and that Gaz was not. I watched those music shorts the day they came out and was really bummed when I heard the news... For the life of me though, I can't fit Hot Rats into my theory!
@@Phaleel Maybe i havent watched enough of him being interviewed to cast the wider view you have. Im refering only to this video... and he comes across well and performs brilliantly.
I saw you front row center at Lakefest. I crossed over to see Johnny Marr. I 'm contemplating cross the pond again. ❤❤🇨🇦 I'm happy to hear you are supporting. ❤️ ❤
Your concert in Doornroosje (Sleeping Beauty) was stunning. Your voice sounds almost angelic to me with a hint of "yes, I know life on Earth is hard. Please keep fighting for the good things in life. There are so many" I loved meeting you afterwards. You were lovely and a sweetie pie. Thanks for a lovely evening and more ❤ You gave me some joy back, as lame as it sounds. And your friend Oly was wonderful too. Too bad his band wasn't there but considering he did a very good job. Ode to Oly Ralfe
I cry often, and a lot, when listening to music, to all kinds of music, I can even get emotional with an AC/DC song. It happens to me with a few Supergrass songs, Mary, She's so loose , and a few others. I didn't know why, if it was just an spontaneous reaction to beauty. It can be very well what Gaz says, a simple change in chords may trigger the emotion.
I hear you. Mama & Papa does it to me, as does the bit on the live version of Bad Boy Boogie when everything kicks back in after Angus’ stripped back solo - I always think “this time it’s not going to get me!’ but it does every bloody time 😢 Weird 🤷🏼♂️
it happens everytime with this part of the song "I need someone to be around 'Cause I'm breakin' into lies Somebody stop me 'Cause I'm lookin' for my Lookin' for my high" song: cheapskate.
Supergrass were a great band - perhaps under appreciated as Britpop is really looked down on at the moment. But Gaz's solo records are really really under rated IMHO. He's really grown as a solo artist record after record. I think those albums stand up against much more acclaimed records.
first song wasn't my thing, was about to switch off, thank fuck I didn't, the last 3 tunes were brain meltingly beautiful, possibly the first solo project ive seen in my life that seems like a band of people and not just hired guns and a boss

00:00 'Sonny The Strong'
05:33 'Walk The Walk'
12:37 'The English Ruse'
20:29 'Don't Say It's Over'
True artist that can play live and it sound just like the record. Gaz the man.
agree
👌🌹🌹🌹🌹
His voice has held up so well and his singing might even be superior to his younger days.
saw Supergrass twice, still one of my all time favorites In It for the Money gets a spin every few months like clockwork.
The mans brilliant.
Why is Gaz Coombes not getting the exposure he deserves for his more mature solo work - amazing.
Great interview. Gaz just comes across as such an open friendly guy. I love Supergrass and hes lost absolutely nothing since those days.
I wish I saw what you do.
