When I first got to L.A. I was hired on a movie crew to drive the big vans called Honeywagons...I was sent to a hotel on Wilshire BLVD in Beverly Hills to pick up Greg Allman and his (girlfriend at the time) and drive them to the movie set...it was a 40 min drive give or take, it was 1988 a low budget straight to video horror/slasher film named "Rush Week". My memory of pulling up to the hotel and then seeing Gregg Allman for the first time was surreal. As he and his girlfriend approached the Honeywagon, he said hello in a very soft voice, I opened the door for him and his girlfriend, they settled in, I shut the door and remember as I was driving, I would look in the review mirror and find him looking at me... Our eye contact was frequent, and electric. I was very shy too, I was 25 back then and resembled Andie Macdowell quite a bit. When we arrived at the set I opened the door and he reached for my hand and said Thank you while he melted me with his very demure eye contact. My God he was beautiful! At the time I knew his name, and knew very little of his music, so I was not starstruck, but rather he put me in a soft trance like state...he exuded sexapeal out of his soul. He was magnetic inside and out. Only now do I really get the depth of talent, heart and soul. RIP Greg, you are missed and loved very much. I wish I could have gotten to know you better.
Thank you so much for this interview. I have such a deep understanding of what he was truly like. I'm in the process of reading his book for the 3rd time, and I binge watch him on RUclips constantly. On his very last album " Southern Blood" in his song My Only True Friend when he says "I hope you're haunted by the music of my soul when I'm gone",it dawned on me that those words are so true. I hear his songs in my head all through out the day, and at night when I'm trying to sleep. He was a true musician, a true talent, and a humble, sweet soul.
I was 13 when my heard the song whipping post at a junior high school dance. And I just was mesmerized. I had such a crush on Gregory almond I was Cher. My prayer for him in spirit is that he knows that his brother was always with him. ❤️
Amazing interview!! This was so amazing to watch!! Thank you so much for sharing this video!! My wife and I, got to see him in concert at Harrah's Cherokee, NC not long before he passed. Gregg, is and always will be my favorite vocalist!! 🎸🤘🎶
thanks Joe ... loved Gregg too ... these men all knew him in a personal way over a long time ... was great to get them together to reflect in such a beautiful way
My band plays alot of ABB, He really influenced my music career. Last night when i played midnight rider people tell me how much my music reminded them of Gregory's. When i see quotes like this i say 'what an ego'. lol
I'm 60, as life long Brothers fanatic.... thank you SO MUCH for this interview! Awesome perspectives, but certainly nothing I didn't know already about Gregg. A few years since he passed, and I still can't believe there will never be any new Allman music in the world.
Fab NYC Show Concept!! Salute to you, Scott🇺🇸 !! In New York, The Roof is our Refuge, as The Fire Escape is our Balcony ;) Beautiful Tribute to a most Beautiful One. Gratitude to each of you for sharing your Beats Of Heart for Gregg's Solemn Soul. Rest In The Peace Of Christ GOD, Gregg & Duane Allman.
Wow. I thought I'd seen every interview about Gregg. I learned so much from this. Thank you for doing this. I was lucky enough to see Gregg twice with my daughter...we still talk about it. The best.
SCOTT, THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY, I SAW YOU GUY'S IN TELLURIDE COLORADO, HISTORY IN THE MAKING, GREGG ALLMAN WAS THE FIRST MUSICIAN TO PLAY ON THE STAGE UP THERE, AND THE LAST MUSICIAN , BECAUSE THEY WERE BUILDING A NEW STAGE AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS, I WAS THERE ON THE FIRST CONCERT AND THE LAST ONE WITH GREGG, ON THAT STAGE, WHAT A NIGHT, THAT WAS A GREAT SHOW, I STILL HAVE GREAT DREAMS AT NIGHT AT THAT SHOW. I AM AN OLD FRIEND OF MARK LAESCH, I GOT ONE MORE SILVER DOLLAR, BUT I'M NOT GOIN TO LET THEM CATCH ME NO, MIDNIGHT RIDER, PEACE BRO, MY BEST , COUSIN FIGEL
I'm with you Scott Sharrard! Playin Up A Storm is one of my all time favorites and, I think the most overlooked album on the planet! Who else could do the "Brightest Smile" and add the depth and charm, that he does so well? Laid Back was great and kudos to Johnny Sandlin for putting together all those elements you (collectively) spoke of. It's a beautiful solo debut album. The Carnegie Live Tour was a different concept, but I love it's energy. Also we get to hear for the first time "Oncoming Traffic". To me, he was channeling Ray Charles with his own touch, of course. Who else could not only write a song like that but dare sing it?! He obviously felt solid in doing so and I'm glad he did. In Low Country Blues we get a look at how flexible Gregg is as an artist! What a tremendous album that is! If Gregg was born a bit earlier, I think, imho, he could have held his own with artists of the 50's, orchestra and all, and then turn around and hold his own with just himself and a guitar. Now what was I saying about a favorite album? I'm sorry I haven't been able to listen to the complete Southern Blood, as of yet. Sigh. Except for your collaboration, which is so heartfelt, beautiful and bittersweet. Thank you.
yes Jolene .... Brightest Smile was and is one of my all time favorites too ... actually watched him do it a few times one of them being the first night Scott played w/ Gregg as a member of GAB
As Greg has said , saying southern rock is like saying “rock”rock , White and black southern music “is” rock music , the allmans music is the natural progression (of the times) of America itself , and the next real thing will “always” look back to its home when the world is at its worst, and guess what , like a mother waiting at home, it will always be there .
Awesome interview! Interesting that Gregg didn't assume the role of leader after Duanes' death. I would have thought that was a given. Sounded like he was fine with it though and in the end he was the leader of his own band.
Thanks Chiz ... glad you enjoyed it ... these guys all have really interesting perspectives based on their personal experiences ... it was great fun to learn from them
Just becoming Allman fan..at 70 Gregg, being beautiful..well put.. GREAT interview Thank you all for what you participated in and keeping it alive.. tho great music never dies.. PEACE
