  • I noticed a few days before I shot this video that a hive was being robbed. That's unusual as the flow is still trickling in, so this had to be a very weak colony, much weaker than I initially thought. So I need to go on out and see what is left, and I'd like to invite all of you to come along.

    Southern Mug ups this morning, from Rawl's to Berry's, it is a great day! Thanks for all the videos. I'm a skier, I love the snow, down hill, XC, backcountry hike to ski is the best. Actually, the best is from by back door. It is easier to put on cloths in the winter than to take them off in the summer, once I down to a single layer, it's time to get my feet in a cold-water stream and catch some trout. no ac here. We just got about an inch of rain overnight and the lawn will be browning by the weekend. It's been dry, not critical, woods should have a flush of mushrooms in the next day or so from the rain. I need to get into my bees. Did 4 splits last week. I want to remove the queen cages, so I will get them in a day or sooner. Odd year weather wise, we still have nighttime temps in the low 50's. Thanks for sharing. Stay cool, Peace to all

    Question:
    I assume the robbers come from other hives of yours in the same yard.
    So, when robbed out of one hive aren't they just shifting the honey into comb in their home hive? (So you may lose a colony, but the overall stores of honey stays the same.) Or is the honey consumed somehow?

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  2 года назад +1

      Yes, correct Barbe. Most of my colonies keep the honey in the yard and even a few feral colonies from the woods as well as my neighbor’s colony get some of it. The honey goes back with them and is put to good use. Always a silver lining the way I see it and also good when we can get to the equipment before the wax moths and small hive beetles. Always hate losing the bees, but it happens and has happened yet again a week ago.

    It rained on all of my days off this week so I couldn't get into mine. I wanted to just make sure all was well in there and they had food and space. I'm guessing I should wait now? And it was a blessing that God put rain in my way to protect them from my stupidity. They had been bringing in dark orange pollen this week. I'm guessing all is well in there. During this time how long will you go before checking on a good hive? Or is it just before the next flow, witch should be golden rod right?

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  2 года назад

      Honestly, after harvest, I try to check all of them once very quickly just to be sure there are eggs. I go in and look as fast as I can and the minute I see some eggs I close it down.
      After that, I leave them the rest of the summer without opening them at all. Like you stated, up until the golden rod. And honestly, if things look fine from the outside, I only weigh them then in the fall by tilting them. I might do a fall look to check mites and the effectiveness of any treatments, but that’s it. Oh yea, I’ll also go in if I’m going to put treatments in. But if I’m seeing pollen and good flight, I stay out in the mid summer and dearth. I want no chances of robbing or the chance of rolling a queen this late in the season. I do that initial queen/egg check mainly to see who requeened after any summer swarms.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  2 года назад

      That’s a good plan I would think. Seems once they’re sealed and then frozen, they have to come out good. Maybe some mold and mildew after thawing out, but that’s easy as the bees clean that up no problem. Looking froward to the update on how this works.
