Can't get odin to recognize the phone. It doesn't come up with the com port as you've shown. Any tips?
Use a different charging cable, preferably original one. Also plug into another port on PC/Laptop.

I am trying to do this for Tab 4. when I went to the desk top to search for the file , there is no folder named 42, is this a file you download separately? if yes, where to download it from ?

You will loose because installing recovery will lead to clear catch and also best advised to perform factory reset before flashing custom rom
Unless you have created backup with recovery prior to flash and resetting
