  • This is video 22 in an introductory course on epistemology, the philosophy of knowledge. In this video, we discuss the history of skepticism: its roots in the Platonic dialogues, the purpose of skepticism in the Ancient world, and its transformation by René Descartes. It is only in the 17th century that skepticism becomes a methodological tool and takes on the form of doubts about the existence of an external world.

David Hume, the skeptic among skeptics, told us that we can not derive an ought from an is.
