That's a relief. The nubs on the Pandora can be quite the headache if uncalibrated. Even fully calibrated they can be slightly frustrating. Very excited for this new build!

+SleepyGuyy Hell yeah, I'm saving up for one, I had the pandora, I still play games on it and have it hanging around for various emulated stuff. But this Pyra, it looks great, and it'll be so much more powerfull, the old Pandora could run Starcraft: Broodwar flawlessly, I can only imagine what this beast can handle :P

I've been following this since Ashens made a video years ago. Will this bad boy be able to run Steam? Portable Portal 2 or even some Half Life would be something quiet impressive!
1:30 *claps a few times* Pricey this may be, I can only hope to get this. Not saying it's not worth it. But hearing about the battery space made me happy. I once had an android phone where the battery bloated up enough to actually damage the screen, and at the time I didn't really have the means to replace the battery.
I skipped on Pandora as I was a poor student at the time, but I'm definitely getting Pyra. Just one question, though: why full sized SD cards and not microSD cards? Did you just not need the extra board space? The separate SOC board is genius! Besides the huge development advantages, it makes Pyra the first upgradeable handheld device that I am actually interested in.
From what I heard him say, he is actually running out of space for more WLAN antennae but I will just state the obvious that SD cards can have bigger capacities which means you can have over 1 TB of space in the Pyra currently as there also is an internal microSD slot. Besides that, SD cards are more robust and can have faster controllers for higher bandwidth. Also, the slots themselves are being used for heat dissipation which means bigger is better.
Oh man.. if only this shiny little device could sport some serious Nvidia/AMD-based GPU and a micro HDMI-output, and we could have a brand new Handheld featuring Convergence, almost a PC on-the-go.
I have a Pandora and loved it for the time. I remember thinking the future was ARM processors, still might be, but as far as power and gaming are concerned AMD's APUs have been hitting it out of the park. GPD is about to release a handheld not too much bigger than this that can play PC games. x86 isn't dead yet, and this is AFTER Apple is going full ARM. . .
+Davin Reid Wel, the original Pandora could already run N64, though in some cases shodily, this thing should have no problem whatsoever with full emulation at high framerates.
+Miguel Reyes Android still has sound lag issues, which is not nice when playing games. Also, Android phones are missing gaming controls and often the battery is empty after a few hours of playing. However, if you're just looking for an Android gaming device, then the GPD XD is better suited for you. The Pyra is more a full blown Linux desktop PC which can also be used for gaming :D
+Miguel Reyes It's a portable pc and it just so happens to run emulators also. You are not limited to only playing games or running emulators. You are able to surf the web, do spreadsheets, compile and anything else you can do on a desktop computer on something you can put in your pocket...that's the difference.
All the money was spent on German hookers and blow, Evil Dragon got too drunk and jammed the prototype inside a slut's vagina, its theorized that the unit is somewhere in Budapest by now.
this is depressing. I was one of the original backers when the Pandora was going and I never got anything and then the whole thing went belly up. so I spent 400 and have nothing to show for it.
+daulphin Yes, that was due to OpenPandora Ltd. going bankrupt... a sad story. We tried (and still try!) to help you all as good as possible. Are you on the official list we received from OpenPandora Ltd.? If yes, you will be able to get a Pyra for production cost price (no preorder, directly shipping from stock when it's finished).
+Raul Musaev If you mean touchscreen with sensor. Then the reason is because they want to be able to use stylus for input. As you can see most of the icons are small and it's easier to use non touch OS with stylus than your finger. And capacitive pens are not as accurate as normal stylus on resistive touchscreen.
I think it is possible. It has more than enough power to emulate an old PC, one which can run Windows 95/98. Even you can use Wine on ARM: wiki.winehq.org/ARM
+David G I was talking about something like a VM... Even an I3 struggles with it because there are simply not good VM software to try W9x... In any case I preordered a Pyra, so I suppose I'll find out :P
Hardware wise I think everyone should be making devices with USB-C. I'd do 1 microUSB and 1 USB-C. I like the full SD cards since they are faster than the micro but at the size of a full SD you could use a m2 SATA drive.
+KohkelxonTNX255 without a doubt. I think I would use it more than just a handheld emulator though if it had more power. I prefer a physical keyboard so I think something like this, if it was slightly more powerful could be used as a replacement for a smart phone, a linux laptop and a pretty sweet war driving machine.
Short answer: They simply couldn't get any better suited SoC in small amounts back in 2013, when they were asking companies. They either didn't get a reply or offers for at least 100000 chips. In the case of the Nvidia Tegra, the contract would have required them to hire a Nvidia-certified design company for the device, which was out of the question, financially. Intel was considered but the community was against discarding the available ARM-optimised programs and their models were still using too much power back then and someone would have to write a BIOS for that first. They already had a good connection with Texas Instruments since the Pandora uses an OMAP3 but OMAP5 is sadly the fastest they have, even to this day. On the bright side, there is a good reason the OMAP5 is only dual-core, as the Cortex-A15 core was meant to be a power horse. On paper, it's as fast as the newer quad-core Cortex-A53 in multi-threading which the Raspberry Pi 3 has. Meaning single-thread programs, which most still are, will run twice as fast.
+me1ne tru dat... But after a Powerful Demonstration like that... Auction prices tend to get WILd! I am genuinely curious what one would go for... possibly $7000 ... It is working and UNIQUE !
Not really, as the GPD Win is very different device. Hardware is not open, battery not replaceable, it's bigger, not upgradable, less connection ports, no mobile internet, etc. It's a nice device (and I'm the official distributor for the GPD Win in Germany as well), but still very different. Easier to manufacture and produce as well. I just hope the quality will be better than for the GPD XD - it seems 25% of the GPD XDs die within one year :/
Well, depends on what you plan to do. The GPD Win has no 3G/4G Mobile internet capability, the keyboard isn't as usable (it's not centered) and the storage capabilities aren't as good. It's also missing additional features like a replacable battery, upgradable CPU board, resistive touchscreen (a lot more accurate), and backlit keyboard. So yes, if you plan to mostly play games that run on Windows, the GPD Win will probably be a lot better suited and it's got a good price. But if you want to do other things as well, the Pyra might be a lot better for you.
fabian esterma I actually care. cell phones cost $1100 or more with a 2 or 3yr contract. and they only play Android games or apple etc. and when there two year lifespan is up there obsolete. if this device is upgradeable it's payed for itself. a gaming device. a computer. and a phone all in one. seems like a decent price for what you get
It'll run Debian GNU/Linux, which is way faster, less frustrating, and is more like a desktop environment. You'll probably be able to install Android on it later on, but I don't see why you'd want to after falling in love with true Linux.
Then get an android device whether a cellphone, a tablet, or a phablet, what is good about having a linux os, is freedom and open source, no bounds, plus we all started the learn process at any device we held, from symbian to android and ios, windows, linux or os x ... now there are softwares that can make you use android like shashlik, maybe you can dual boot, i don't know! Have not had the device to experiment and see the possibilities, but am sure am not gonna try and dual boot an android or anything else but linux .... nb : my 1st reply was deleted by mistake, as i seen on my IOS device that i dual posted so i deleted one of them, now it is gone, and am not gonna write it again.
I have always been interested in Pandora and now this until I saw the prices. There is just too much competition and better prices and devices ie a Sony Experia Play for $40 if it is the Verizon version and devices like the Snail W3D gaming phone for $329. I don't mean to poo poo this, however just being honest.
Besides the obvious problem of small production runs, the Pyra has some serious advantages to justify the price. It's not designed to fail after two years like all phones these days, features an upgradable processor, runs a full Debian Linux installation, has longer battery life and many, many expansion ports etc.
what an overpriced pile of junk. Chinese company's are destroying your hopes and dreams. your just trying regain some hope after your last one the Pandora was a complete and utter failure. I hope no one purchases this garbage
+Carlos Piedra Depends. Keyboard layout of the Win is pretty bad, it's so wide you can't even reach the middle keys properly. It's not as flexible (less SD Card slots, less USB ports) and has a capacitive screen which is not good if you want to hit small buttons or window decorations. The DPad is probably not that good (the GPD XD has a bad keyboard), and it's running Windows, which might be useful to some, but also not useful to others (I'd hate to have to install games for 30 minutes only to find out they don't work properly...)
+OpenPandora with all due respect, the GPD win has steam on it's side and windows 10 so the only limit of what games it can play is what it can handle.
+Nick Principe Yes, and? There seem to be a LOT of games the GPD can't handle, and with Win10, you will only find that out after you installed the game (can take up to 30 minutes or longer, if it's a large game) and if it doesn't work, you have to uninstall it again. If I had to do that, I would be pretty much frustrated. Win10 is a downside for me, I prefer Linux. So it can run older Windows games which often use small buttons, which means the capacitive touch doesn't work as good... LTE is missing, as are proper storage capacities (one MicroSDXC Slot... that's not much, as some Windows games need 30GB or more themselves). Doing office work is not that good with the keyboard... So it depends on what your focus is. If you plan to only play Windows games from around 2010 on it, it's perfect and certainly better suited than the Pyra. If you want to do some work or want a smoother gaming experience (the games released for the Pyra will all work on the Pyra, no trial and error!), then the Pyra is better. The GPD Win is neither better nor worse, it's different. And yes, I also have a GPD XD, and the DPad is horrible and it has ugly lightbleed. Apart from that, it's okay.
+OpenPandora Look, I know you are passionate about your product, as you should be, I admire your work put into the pandora and pyra. I've been eyeballing the pandora and pyra for years now and always wanted one so I am not against it at all. You can certainly run more than just 2010 AAA games on the GPD, there is a lot of new (3D and 2d) indies that would also work on it. I don't believe you'd have much trial and error with a atom chip since I've seen the exact atom running in other tablets playing games just fine, but we will see when the actual device releases how it functions in the real world. In terms of gaming outside of emulators a windows device offers much more than debian Linux, HOWEVER if someone does prefer linux and their intention isn't running steam games, rather emulation and whatever games do support debian linux on arm then the pyra would be better suited and also it would be just fine outside of gaming too, like you said before there are plenty of ports to use. I will try to buy a pyra at some point to support, I'll also get a GPD win, it will be fun to have both! I wish best of luck to the pyra and hope the launch goes smoothly! I do like how you made it upgradeable like a PC by taking out the board and replacing it. That is awesome.
That's a relief. The nubs on the Pandora can be quite the headache if uncalibrated. Even fully calibrated they can be slightly frustrating. Very excited for this new build!
I'm just glad we live in a time where several companies are working on devices like this - loved the UMPC form factor but now that I have money...
I can't wait to see this device come out. As I'm a student and always worried about money, doubt Ill be able to pre-order but hopefully at some point I will be able to order one. I definitely will be saving for one
+SleepyGuyy Hell yeah, I'm saving up for one, I had the pandora, I still play games on it and have it hanging around for various emulated stuff. Looks great, I hope the final model have also the option for this transparent case with lights!!... looks really good like a GameBoy!!
+SergiioMan Well, if so many are requesting it, I might really do that :)
OpenPandora I hope!!
+OpenPandora I hope it's and option then because I'm not a fan of it like so many others are.
+OpenPandora I would also like it transparent and with blinking leds :)
+SergiioMan I want too the transparent case!!!!
fabulous ! so much care is being taken in the development.
And thumbs up for your honesty in describing the Pyra!
Michel du bist unser Held :) Wahnsinns Leistung sowas auf die Beine zu stellen . Freu mich schon !
Eagerly waiting for when I can preorder one, EXCITED!!! Keep it up man!
You guys are just fucking awesome! You show that you put so much passion and effort into making devices, rather than Mr. Mike Kennedy and his Coleco Chameleon ;D
I'm extremely excited for the Pyra!!!
Please let this not be to expensive! I was really looking forward to it since a few years!

Wow this is really cool, hope this ends up being released!! I've become a tiny bit wary of crowdfunding projects D:
When will this be released 2029 ? Ludicrous...
Can't wait for it!!
i cant wait
Really interesting to see the steps in development! Great work!
I had the problem with a swollen battery on a mobile phone from a major manufacturer before, it made the back cover come off very often, so it's great to see that you thought about that potential trouble area.
I'm a bit worried about the accidental pressing of the backspace key etc. even if the action buttons get raised, altough it's difficult to judge from just watching a video or pictures.
Questions that came up while watching this:
- is it an IPS-screen?
- will the user always have to start with a special Pyra Debian image or would any distribtion run on it, maybe supported by a Pyra repo to pull additional drivers and tweaks?
- what will be the default desktop environment and will the user be able to install other desktop environments?
- will hibernate be supported?
- is there no webcam built in?
- did you perfom drop tests to find out if the case survives a fall i.e. from a table?
I can't wait for the next update on development!
I wonder how I missed this video. Maybe I saw it but just don't remember and forget to give it a like.
Please make a transparent version with those pretty lights.
That is awesome seeing the Pyra prototype. Does the speakers work?
I like the red pyra tbh
I wanted a pandora but idc now I want a pyra.
SEGA: ... Superrr...?! John Simm: Supa Usor. They told me to say this. Sega, yes obviously, null cry... me: notes cocae Twitch. yes, thanks bios_medic thingy.
a new Pandora interesting since the old one did not do well, if this is reasonable priced and powerful that would be amazing
Glad to here you're putting more space in the back cover, I've needed to buy a new back cover for my pandora for a while now because the battery snapped the pegs when it swelled up. Do the keyboard buttons feel more solid when you press them? (like maybe closer to the game controller buttons?) The pandora feels a bit "squishy" which can cause letters not to register too well when you type fast.
+TheRealAlpha2 Yes, the keys feel more solid, as they have plastic caps (so they're very similar like the normal gaming buttons).
gepixelt
Thanks, I'm so glad to hear that.
Trish: Its not too hot right now this is without any power or setting?! John Simm: ^_^ me: kill* button... yeh. it runs, it needs more cpu?! thmp: 4D wuteh?!!
Do you see recent news of the "GPD WIN" as possible competition, or do you feel the Pyra has enough useful differences to effectively be a matter of personal preference? The most obvious difference is the OS (Debian vs Windows 10 Home).
I don't know the specs of that other portable device but..... Win 10 f*cking s*cks!
(Had it on my Laptop. And there was a loading screen when you pressed Crtl+Alt+Del befor the security options showed up.)

We preordered this over a year ago and have not received any updates. What's going on?
How will the 4g and 3g things work? Will it be kind of be like when using cellular data on your phone or will you need to connect it to your phone via bluetooth to use the internet? (Sorry I just don't understand the whole internet side of the Pyra)
I am interested in purchasing a Pyra and perhaps reviewing it, but first I would like to aquire a higher understanding of it. On a side note though I love what you have done with the Pyra, it looks amazing. I've been a fan since the Pandora first came out
i wish youd have drawn something on gimp to show how well the resistive screen work. otherwise great work
I've been following this since Ashens made a video years ago. Will this bad boy be able to run Steam? Portable Portal 2 or even some Half Life would be something quiet impressive!
Years and years but still no pyra has ever release
Pyra's keyboard includes the letter "ñ"? I'm from Spain, if I buy it throught dragonbox, will be free the shipping ?
Do they have a Kik starter or go fund me or patrion? I want to do whatever i can to speed up the production.
1:30 *claps a few times*
Pricey this may be, I can only hope to get this. Not saying it's not worth it.
But hearing about the battery space made me happy. I once had an android phone where the battery bloated up enough to actually damage the screen, and at the time I didn't really have the means to replace the battery.
I hope to put Mate on this thing as well .
Last I heard, aTc wants to make Mate the default instead of Xfce for the Pyra anyway.
So excited
Almost 4.5 years since the prototype...but still no pyra...
I skipped on Pandora as I was a poor student at the time, but I'm definitely getting Pyra.
Just one question, though: why full sized SD cards and not microSD cards? Did you just not need the extra board space?

Liked! I just wanna wish you success and to release you device soon, good luck!
Тик-так с Крун QY / Tic-tac with Krun QY
Do you have to build the DragonBox Prya.
I have a question. Can the pyra run steam and play steam games like team fortress 2 or csgo?
Will there be a pyra at the gamescom this year?
Beautiful.
The ABXY buttons for gaming are arranged incorrectly. Find a Super Nintendo controller to reference.
+Chris Duffy Agreed, I hope they are just a mistake with this prototype.
The reference here is the GamePark Holdings GP2X, which the Pandora copied as it was meant to be an unofficial successor.
Probably a stupid question as I've never used a device like this before, but will the Pyra be able to run programs designed for the Open Pandora?
Yes, they both run the same operating system (if it's Linux, it's compatible).
***** Cool beans!
Looks like a very early version of the GPD win
+Abel G. Loera Except for that it does have a lot more features ;) And it more looks like a Pandora, BTW :)
Oh man.. if only this shiny little device could sport some serious Nvidia/AMD-based GPU and a micro HDMI-output, and we could have a brand new Handheld featuring Convergence, almost a PC on-the-go.

Will the nubs still have the full range of motion with the caps on? The area around them seems a bit cramped.
+Pfanne Wender See the nubs' technical specs here www.pyra-handheld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nubs
Wait. When the battery gets old it blows up? What battery are you using?!
haha, I believe he meant to say that the battery swells a little bit overtime
More importantly, the case is so resilient, it can survive the battery blowing up!
True, it swells :) Like any LiPolymer battery :)
Hows the N64 emulation on that sucker? Also amazing work! Cant wait
+Davin Reid Wel, the original Pandora could already run N64, though in some cases shodily, this thing should have no problem whatsoever with full emulation at high framerates.
Why dont you upgrade some parts of it. this kind of concept is good but theres a lot umpc now has been upgrading . you can choose either intel or amd
Will you be offering it in the clear case? Not really a fan of the red case.
The red case is only a rendering. The standard colour will be black and a batch of 500 clear cases will be produced first, he wrote recently.
I knew that you are german :D unseren Akzent kann man auch nicht verstecken :) Cooles Video!
Ai dunt noww wat ju meen wis sat. ;)
When will this come out?
does it turn off when closed?
also, can you easily change the ABXY layout?
Please, will Pyra support Steam and Vulkan api? Is there a list of compatible games?
No.
Hmm I see what's going on here. Pgs vs GpD win vs pyra. They all have they own advantage.
What is the difference between this and a cheap android phone ? I mean if you plan to play games and emus .....
+Miguel Reyes Android still has sound lag issues, which is not nice when playing games. Also, Android phones are missing gaming controls and often the battery is empty after a few hours of playing.

no.

Why Dual Core? That is terrible compared to today's tech, at least quad core. Other than that it looks amazing and I would love to have one! :D

+me1ne tru dat... But after a Powerful Demonstration like that... Auction prices tend to get WILd! I am genuinely curious what one would go for... possibly $7000 ... It is working and UNIQUE !
sorry but the gpd win kinda beat you to that
Not really, as the GPD Win is very different device.
Hardware is not open, battery not replaceable, it's bigger, not upgradable, less connection ports, no mobile internet, etc.
It's a nice device (and I'm the official distributor for the GPD Win in Germany as well), but still very different.
Easier to manufacture and produce as well.
I just hope the quality will be better than for the GPD XD - it seems 25% of the GPD XDs die within one year :/
+OpenPandora oh wow that is very different. Super cool. Never heard of a modular handheld like that. So simple but very ingenious
Why don't you guys collaborate with more people so products don't take a decade.
I that gpd win
with the new coming powerful w10 handhelds coming from gpd, kickstarter, etc this is already dead before arrival
But if you want to do other things as well, the Pyra might be a lot better for you.
fabian esterma I actually care. cell phones cost $1100 or more with a 2 or 3yr contract. and they only play Android games or apple etc. and when there two year lifespan is up there obsolete. if this device is upgradeable it's payed for itself.
a gaming device. a computer. and a phone all in one. seems like a decent price for what you get
hope it runs Android😃😃😃
It'll run Debian GNU/Linux, which is way faster, less frustrating, and is more like a desktop environment. You'll probably be able to install Android on it later on, but I don't see why you'd want to after falling in love with true Linux.
T. Alphecca intriguing
Knight Hawk I'm not very smart to use and understand Linux. Android is simple for me and based off Linux
GPD Win, will blow this product away
what an overpriced pile of junk. Chinese company's are destroying your hopes and dreams. your just trying regain some hope after your last one the Pandora was a complete and utter failure. I hope no one purchases this garbage
gpd win is better
+Carlos Piedra Depends.
Keyboard layout of the Win is pretty bad, it's so wide you can't even reach the middle keys properly.
It's not as flexible (less SD Card slots, less USB ports) and has a capacitive screen which is not good if you want to hit small buttons or window decorations.
The DPad is probably not that good (the GPD XD has a bad keyboard), and it's running Windows, which might be useful to some, but also not useful to others (I'd hate to have to install games for 30 minutes only to find out they don't work properly...)
+OpenPandora idk most of the gpd consoles are pretty good. i own a gpd xd and I'm pretty satisfied with it.
This is a keyboard... test.
