Fine Art TV Series - Colour In Your Life
    Season - 10
    Episode - 10
Filmed on Location at - Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Amanda Hyatt is an alla prima watercolour artist who has been a professional for 30 years. She has won many major awards in Australia, including The Alice Bale, The Kenneth Jack and The Camberwell. Amanda paints spontaneously with immediate reaction to a subject both in the studio and en plein air. She paints quickly and intuitively, involving thinking and sensitivity. She encourages her students to see the light, the negative space, the tones and fluidity of the seemingly unpredictable medium of watercolour.
Amanda is a member of The Twenty Melbourne Painters Society and The Australian Watercolour Institute for twenty-three years. Her career has seen thirty-three solo exhibitions, with articles published in magazines such as Flashart (USA), L’Art de L’Aquarelle (France) and The Artist (UK).
Amanda has DVDs and downloads by APV Films (UK) and gives teaching art tours continuously, both nationally and internationally for Travelrite International. In 2015 she is taking a Baltic Cruise around Finland, St. Petersburg, Sweden, Denmark and Estonia for Traverite International.
    Please contact Travelrite for details.
Her supplier and sponsor Senior Art Supplies of Malvern, Melbourne, carries her preferred brand of paint, Daniel Smith, and her Media DVDs, ‘Five Steps To Watercolour‘, ‘River Scene Masterclass‘ and ‘Landscape Masterclass‘.
You can contact the artist about their art tips or art techniques directly via their website amandahyatt.com.au/

Every single of her watercolor steps scared me so much 😱 but eventually it turns out to be such a beautiful piece! That’s really a masterful approach to paint!

I've only seen such a bold watercolor painter once before. It's just fantastic what lack of fear she has about splashing paint on the paper. Inspires me to be much more random and painterly.

This artist is so amazing!! She breaks the rules (i.e. dark first!!) and in the end, her paintings are so special and unique!

I'm an american painter based in NYC. I think what you are doing is incredible. You guys in Australia have nailed it. The art scene here is arrogant and snobbish. It embarrasses me to know I have been in that and that I could not see how we actually put people off. I take my hat off to you, and I applaud you. Maybe we here in America USA will catch up. Here everything has to be modern is not it is considered old and already seen. Everything is new if it is done by a current artist regardless. Americans are slowly changing their attitude towards realism and traditional painting. Again I thank you and I greatly enjoy the movement there. Keep it up. I believe I will replace my water colors with Daniel smith just because even thou they are very expensive here.

+lallope Great to hear from you, sorry for the late reply but I have been in new Zealand filming. We leave to fly to California on the 1st of December to start filming Artists for the U.S market as well. We have many galleries Celebs and Art marketing people gathering around the idea now and we think it may take off over there in a big way. We will be in the New York area next May to film there as well. Hope all is well, Graeme

I've only just recently discovered this channel and the content is truly inspiring to an ex-engineer/electrician turned semi-retired and getting into watercolour as a beginner.
Well, I say beginner because I only started about 2 years ago painting on and off with no instruction just a few watercolour videos to get me going. The channel that started it all for me was Watercolor by Shibasaki, which is very much aimed at beginners. Since then my playlist for watercolour videos is now approaching 1,000. So I've obviously caught the bug and found myself well and truly down a rabbit hole of mystery and wonder 😀
My painting frequency has steadily increased, as have my art materials, although it tends to have patterns of intense activity interspersed with nothing or doing sketch drawings instead in order to improve my drawing ability.
Watching this video has given me some excellent tips, as Amanda is very good at communicating key points while painting. For example, I would never have dared to put masking tape across the painting to create straight lines. Also, the way she uses the 3 values to make the features of a painting stand out more clearly and draw the viewers eye into the painting. The comment about Chinese White was interesting too, I have also found it to be very poor at adding white highlights to paintings, so I'll try the Gouache next time.
I have a similar photo of my older brother when he was sailing, so this video has given me the inspiration to paint from the photo and send it to him for his 80th birthday. Thanks to both of you for this well produced video mini-tutorial from such an wonderfully talented artist.
PS. I never knew there were so many watercolour artists in Australia. Why do you think that is? Do you have a history of famous artists or is it because you have some of the most varied scenery in the world to choose from when painting?

OH MY GOODNESS Mark. Its Graeme here Sir. I have never had a longer or my passionate post than yours in the 12 years I have been doing this. Yes Australia has some of he best water colour artists in the world down here. I think the light has a lot to do with it and the vast landscapes we have. So glad you have enjoyed the channel. We try to film and up load a show every week and we have filmed in 7 countries over the last 12 years. Please stay in touch and pass the word on about what we are doing. Hope you are well Mark, Graeme

@@ColourinyourlifeAu thanks Graeme, I like to provide honest comment on some videos as a way of showing appreciation for what you do. I have learnt a lot from reading other people's comments too.
It makes sense what you say about Australia and recently, in another video of yours about the artist Julie Goldspink, she shed some light on why the state of Victoria has particularly become a focal point for watercolour artists. Interestingly, my eldest daughter was living and working in Melbourne last year, where she took up watercolours and mixed media exchange projects. I've painted from one of her photos of the coast where there are some stunning coastal views.
PS. As a beginner I started with cheap materials, which I later realised was a false economy. So bit by bit I've invested in better quality paints, paper and brushes. I'm using it all up for practice anyway, so it's not wasted. I've also become a fan of Daniel Smith paints too, they are gorgeous. Luckily, where I live in Madrid, an art supply shop has a large stock of watercolours and the Daniel Smith range is well represented. I'm going to try some paints from M. Graham and Schmincke Horadam next :-)

Imperfection is better than perfection. I agree. Flaws add soul to a painting. When you seek perfection, it becomes sterile and soulless. Flaws add a personal touch that is harder to reproduce.
