- Rock and Roll's Mad Scientist, Edgar Winter tells the story of creating the 1970s classic rock masterpiece Frankenstein. It was a 20 minute jam that the band the Edgar Winter Group decided to edit down to a manageable rock instrumental to throw on the album as an extra cut. The Band had the tape draped all over the studio and made cuts here and there, when the drummer said It's like a Frankenstein monster so the title stuck. Frankenstien ended up as a B-side to their 3rd single after their first few songs had failed to chart. A DJ turned the record around and played the B-side and everyone flipped out. This Lyric-less 70s rock jam became a #1 smash making it the only rock instrumental in history to do so! It also opened the door for another massive hit, the 70s classic Freeride with Dan Hartman on lead vocals. Edgar Winter tells us the story in this exclusive interview on professor of rock.

i saw Edgar play this live and it was the most awesome thing ever. i was floored. it to this day is my most favorite music. every time i hear it i envision him doing it when i saw it live.
Edgar is truly one of the unsung Gods of Rock. He deserves to be recognized.

There are far more amazing/talented artists/bands which never hit the same popularity as Elvis, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, etc.. doesn't mean they were "underrated".
And this is the same for artists, musicians, actors, writers, etc..
What I've noticed for many years, is it's trendy for people to make the statement "this or that musician was underrated.." mostly from people who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.. they just say it because it's the trendy thing to say.. 🤷
In fact, being popular among general society, and making it to the 'top 40s list' isn't the way people who care about and know music, and know and are in the industry rate musicians..
and we also don't play the "who's best" game either..
These are things which only exist within general society.
And btw, just asking.. just how much of Edgar's work in the music industry do you know/are you aware of? 🤔
@@warthogA10 I'm sixty one. I still remember putting on the album They Only Come Out at Night and hearing Freeride for the first time! (I got it from my older brother) It was fantastic! I'd sit and listen the the whole album and especially that song over and over again!

What could be called an accidental masterpiece. I've loved this song since the first time I heard it right after it was released. Yeah, I'm old, but Frankenstein only gets better with age, much like the monster it's named after.

David Letterman advised his audience that if they ever got the chance to listen to Edgar live, they should time how long Frankenstein played. A few years later, while standing in the volleyball court in the back of Minder Binder's one night in Tempe, AZ in the middle 80's, it lasted 19 minutes. Most memorable performance, ever.
Lynyrd Skynyrd did the same thing with *"Freebird"* at _Funochios_ in Atlanta... and they were just killing it all the way through. Didn't slow down at all until they were done!!

Like 23 years ago my boss paid 10 grand to have Edgar Winter play at his bar in Treasure Island Florida. Gators on the Pass. I remember going into dry storage before the show and Edgar was sitting on a few cases of beer noodling on his Saxophone. Good stuff.

@@gracieg7601 in the 70's these twin albino brothers one played electric Guitar, and the other played a synth with a strap like a guitar. For the times it very futuristic! Edger had a hit called frankinstien. Still holds up today
I remember when my rich friends dad got a quad stereo stereo and we smoked a joint for the first time. We sat on the dock in the middle of the four speakers. When they introduced the synthesizer before the drum solo. It was like entering another dimension.

My sound system in my '68 Nova was wired with 4 speakers with a toggle switch to go monaural or stereo to accommodate the stereo cassette deck. The radio was AM/FM mono & when that section you're talking of came on the radio with the 4 speakers blasting I entered that dimension. Great memory from 52 years ago!!!

I saw Edgar perform Frankenstein when he was with Ringo's All-Starr Band around 2006. Just a mind-blowingly incredible performance! He went from one instrument to another seamlessly.
i saw him about 2000 in PA and yes, he didn't skip a beat. one of the most awesome live songs i ever saw.

@@alisoncole3211 i have listened to the song on cassette tape till the machine broke. then there is youtube. and when i saw them in person...nothing can compare to the energy, i hope to keep that memory locked in my brain for ever. some of these bands don't sound well at all live but Edgar was one of the best i've ever seen.

I had a 65 Ford Galaxy 500. Kraco 8 track player with 4 speakers. That tune would walk all the way around that huge ass car interior. Miss that car.
You know what I think is cool? 2 months, 354 likes and 41 comments. Over a largely overlooked car that is 58 and some change years old. I miss that old car but I've been thinking about her a lot lately.

I did see Johnny perform once... barely understood anything he said, but he absolutely tore it up on the guitar.
He was touring in support of Let Me In, to give you an idea of how long ago that would have been.

Edgar (and Johnny) were my dad's fav's. Technically my first concert was Edgar Winter when I was 3 or 4 back in the early 80's. I think Edgar is the most eclectic musician I have ever seen and perhaps one of the most unappreciated.

Absolutely man, Edgar and Johnny are 2 of the greatest musicians of the rock and roll era. Edgar an INCREDIBLE multi instrumentalist.
When I bought a ticket to see Edgar Winter around 1973-4, I thought I was going to see Edgar Winter’s White Trash (still an all time favourite studio album). When I got to the gig, it was The Edgar Winter Group - a 4 piece. Shocked. But Edgar and his band, Chuck Ruff, Ronnie Montrose, and Dan Hartman won me over in the first 5-10min, and I saw them 3 more times in the next 12 months. I heard Frankenstein ‘live’ before I heard the recording, and besides having a great groove, it was a showcase piece to show Edgar’s virtuosity on keys, sax and timbales. Been a fan since then. I left the USA for the UK 32 yrs ago and no one over here seems to know him here. But some friends saw EW on the Ringo tour last year and secretly videoed Frankenstein, which I saw. Besides the flashbacks I was experiencing, there was a moment that blew my socks off: during the timbales/drum duel, Edgar (on top form as usual) drops out to give Gregg Bissonette maybe the best Rock drum solo in the history of the world (IMHO)… A very generous move by EW, and by Ringo for letting Gregg shine. A year or so later I discovered Tower Of Power, which has been filling my White Trash brass jones ever since. But Edgar wrote and sang some great songs!! 🎶🎹🎶🎷🎶
I always forget Ronnie Montrose was his guitar player on this song before Rick Derringer was with him, good stuff indeed👍
You ever see Michael Shrieve at Woodstock when he was drumming for Santana... at 19 years old?
@@donarthiazi2443 that was an amazing performance and that show put Santana on the map. They were for the most part unknowns at Woodstock. I saw an interview with Michael taking about that and he said he actually turned 20 two weeks before that happened. But it doesn't take away from one of the most memorable drum performances in history ! They were all on 🔥 and, tripping their brains out to boot. Jerry Garcia gave them acid after they arrived in the helicopter, they were reluctant to take it but because they were originally scheduled to go on hours later thought they'd be okay by then. Well they got the call much sooner than expected and had to play very much "under the influence" and brought the house down. Carlos said he watched the neck of his guitar turn into a snake 😂

@@donarthiazi2443 no it was very definitely LSD peyote is a very different high and you have to throw up before you get off but I do remember well him saying it was indeed acid. The Dead were very much into LSD and wanted to share the love 😂✌️
Brother Johnny's "PROGRESSIVE BLUES EXPERIMENT" 1967 was waaaaaay ahead of its time. Still is.
Saw Edgar back in the late 70's, early 80's (?),and loved him and Johnny both for decades now. Was overjoyed to see him again last June at our incredible venue in Southern Oregon called the Brittfest (all kinds of music, all summer into the fall)....not as the headliner, but lo and behold....the keyboard player "backing" none other than Ringo !!!
Great show by the aptly named "All Stars"....& yes, yes, it was.... ALL stars !

I had the privilege of winning concert tickets to see Edgar Winter live, here on Long Island, with my wife. He is a consummate performer and even mentioned his brother, Johnny.
Well, now I have to go find that song and listen to it!! Loved it from the moment I heard it; never could hear it enough, growing up in the ‘70s.

The 1st album I purchased with my own money in '72. I was 12 and my religious Dad could not believe his eyes with Edgar on the cover!

My dad saw the cover of a Yes album with a naked dude standing in front of skyscrapers. He wanted to hear it, and when Jon Anderson opened his mouth, my dad looked at me sideways and said "He's queer"! I broke out laughing and said "well he's no Frank Sinatra, that's for sure".

I saw his brother Johnny perform alongside Leon Russell in a small town outside of Gainesville, Florida, circa 1983.
Bet that was a great show.
I like to believe that there are no accidents the DJ's heard these songs and played them just to play something they liked even though they were not allowed. The radio stations were told what to play and thats why most of these accidents happen.

When I was a teenager there was a dance evening in a school gymnasium, with teens from about 3 schools all around (secondary to junior high, different backgrounds), every Friday night, and Frankenstein was expected and wildly enjoyed by all.

I’ve seen other interviews with Winter. The man is just a good human. Absolutely love him. Lots of “old timers” in the industry are great. Lots aren’t. Winter ranks high among the good guys.

I got the opportunity to meet and chat with Edgar when my band opened for him in 2004. He invited a couple of us into his dressing room trailer to hang and he was total gentleman. We had a nice discussion about his brother Johnny, too.

To set out and make a song like this, it seemingly always has a commercial feel to it. To LET THE NOTES FLY you get incredible stuff like 'Frankenstein' & 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'. 😍👍 I was born at the right time, early 1950s.

The music made the party for sure. OMG!! The incomparable Edgar Winter! I saw he and Johnny in concert more than once. They put on a performance that just blew everyone away. He and Johnny were two guys who just loved music and it showed. I met their mama at a garden club meeting. Miss Edwina was a lovely lady and she sure loved her boys. So happy to see Edgar looking GREAT! Old memories!

Edgar is a killer interview subject. I wish I could've been albino like him and Jonny, but - I'm just legally blind. For me, albino musicians were born with Glam written all over them, no matter what style of music they play.

Frankenstein is THE greatest hard rock instrumental of all time. I've been listening to it regularly for 50 years, and it never gets old.
I worked with Edgar and Leon doing sound back in the 80's when they were touring together, and I never heard this story of how Frankenstein came to life. Cool!

Edgar Winter is a true maestro of sounds as seemingly unrelated us traditional guitar based Blues, Boogie, guitar focused Heavy Metal, and Jazz Fusion. I am 64 years old and came to know of his talents as a 13, 14 year old exploring Heavy Metal, Funk, Psychedelic Soul, and Progressive Rock during the early/mid 70s.
