Regarding the low budget microphones, I could recommend a Fifine microphone, preferably a K669B or Ampligame. I have a T669 and it's audio quality is great
If anyone wants a very similar sound to the sm7b, get a Shure MV7X, an elgato wave xlr with the SM7b Rk345 windscreen and you'll be golden. That's what I use and it's really good for a 300 dollar set up
Elgato Wave 3? Are you kidding me? That thing is garbage. The market by no means is shifting away from the sm7b to Elgato. You need a Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone like a Neumann TLM 102 or a Shure SM27
Just checked a review of it. It’s not bad at all. I think the issue is that the Elgato and Shure serve different needs and therefore are not competitors. Lgato uses USB which is good for content creators but the SM7B is a podcast favorite because it makes your voice sound amazing The mics are also in different price brackets so it makes even less sense to compare. I bet he got a fat check from Elgato
@@n8wealth I have been doing voice over work for close to 20 years. I do HR voice overs for government agencies and private corporations (when you have to watch a video at your company about sexual harassment and work place injuries type things, that is probably me) and I have a faceless channel withover 1 million subs and from my experience there is no logical reason for him saying that.
While this video IS a decent entry option to get into the audio world, there's a lot of factual misinformation. 1) The SM7B is NOT the best mic for most people. It's a dynamic mic and designed to reject noise around it. It's rather muddy and has too much low end which requires you to EQ it. Most people also buy this and a CloudLifter CL1 to have additional clean gain when they can in fact buy a better interface OR they can just get a Klark Teckniks Mic Booster CT1 or Fethead that plugs directly into the mic > other end goes into the XLR cable 2) It's not the Sweetwater SSL2 but the Solid State Logic/SSL SSL2. It's a great interface from what I hear, but there's also been a batch of them that have been failing more often, so it's not something I'd recommend for the time being. 3) I don't recommend the Blue Yeti anything since there are far better options, for far less money. Instead, I'll recommend the AT2020/2035/Rode NT1/Neat King Bee V2 and a budget XLR interface. 4) A good starter USB mic I hear a lot about is the Razer Siren Mini which I haven't used it but it's on par with the Mackie EM-91CU+ 5) Pop filters are NOT needed if you have good mic control and talk slightly off-axis, but they're good to have as a backup. I keep one attached to my AT2035. 6) The Rode boom arm is good. 7) You can still hear your pops. 8) When you record voiceovers, you should be in a treated space and it should be a "dead sound". The cleaner the signal, the better sound you'll have. 9) If you're adjusting your gain with a USB mic, or really any interface connected to your computer, you can just monitor your audio for levels in your DAW. 10) Again, lower your pops in post. You failed to do this and it's incredibly frustrating to hear. 11) Stop buying the SM7B. It's a nice-looking mic but you can get away with an SM57 or 58 and do a bit of EQ to get it as close to a 7B as possible. I sold my 7B as I didn't need it. If someone's voice is higher pitch (tenor/soprano) a dynamic mic with lower frequencies like the 7B, will make them sound worse. A large diaphragm condenser mic like the AT2020 fits higher-pitched voices better. 12) In Audition especially, set your multitrack to mono but realistically speaking, use a clicker/clapper to mark your takes and just get used to reading the waveform. 13) Study how sound works and what each fx does. Hard limiting isn't worth it long term. Also, if you use that Diagnostics feature to shorten silences, your preset needs to be tweaked as it likely will grab other noises. 14) LOWER YOUR POPS and talk off-axis. Now with all that said, the rest of the info is fine for newbies and you're learning a lot but I wouldn't call this audio professional. It's fine for a RUclips video but I'd say more research was needed. Still, it's good that you've planted a seed into people's minds and will now encourage better sound overall.
Thanks for the feedback! I will note though, all of the mic recommendations were based PURELY off of personal experience and were described as so. I know plenty of people, including myself, that love the SM7B and the other mics discussed in the video. As for audio quality, I'm sure you're aware of diminishing returns: "good enough" is usually all you need in regards to RUclips audio (unless you're making content about audio engineering or something similar), but I'm sure you're not incorrect with most of your critiques
@@n8wealth thanks for replying. I did see your note about personal experience. I just wanted to clear up this idea (some people have) that someone needs an SM7B to be considered a content creator. I see it a lot with kids/teens who see their favorite streamer have a 7B and they save up for one, thinking it'll lead to an influx of viewers. One of the best audio chains on the Internet is my buddy Travelyan, over on Twitch. The dude knows how to make the 7B "sing". I sold my 7B to a dad whose son wanted to get into podcasting and I'm not upset about it. As for the audio engineering bit; while I am one by trade, I'd say that there's plenty of people that do appreciate high quality audio. One person I know who has a sizeable following; you can really hear their room reflections and it's pretty distracting. My background is recording voiceover for IVR and I've spent hours learning what I can about making the best audio possible. Anyway, best of luck and looking forward to see what your next video is like :)
@@n8wealth my biggest reasoning for making a response was due to the recommendation of the Yeti X.10-15 years ago the Blue Yeti was a decent option, but now it's just surpassed by other brands and mics. Like the Elgato Wave XLR. I doubt you'd see any professional VA's purchase and use one for high end client work. Essentially by making this video, you've now labeled yourself as an authority figure on clean audio. I get that we creators need to simplify concepts for general audiences. That's perfectly fine, but because of your reach and audience size, you're now responsible for leading people to the best information. And the world of recording equipment on a consumer level has changed so much in the past decade. Anecdotal evidence aside, you absolutely didn't mention the recording space. A thousand dollar 416 or TLM103 isn't going to sound good in a bathroom or a school gym. Just like a modern phone mic in a 10k treated booth will sound far better. Audio is very nuanced and while people like me can mostly tell the difference, you're average Joe who'll watch this might go out and buy a Yeti X and wonder why it sounds worse than the mic shootouts they watched prior. And lastly, I brought it up before, but if you talk off axis, gain down and manually edit the plosives further, you get a smoother sound.
I've had the Razer Siren Mini for 2 years, and I'm very sorry to say that it's a terrible mic. I've tried numerous tests and filters and have done everything I can, but it still captures all the noise even from the street. I do not recommend it unless you have really good control over your environment sounds.
@@n8wealthyo, I agree with that guy. I was thinking your early videos sounded good but over processed so it's good to see this one.
