As a seller and a buyer what they did was really bad. I know a lot of sellers were complaining about how much they were taking from us in seller's fees but now they're taking the even more from the buyers a lot more. The only thing you used to have to pay as a buyer was either a shipping fee is the seller is charging shipping or some tax. Now you have to pay four different fees as a buyer which I find ridiculous. This company is making a ton of money off of these transactions. Someone buys something for $20 by the time you check out either close to $40 or over $50 depending on the item.
I am still making sales on Mercari but they are all very low price point sales... like below $20. I think buyers don't want to pay up for items anymore because of the buyer fees. The price goes up dramatically on more expensive items. I might just list clearance items I want to get rid of on Mercari.
Yeah as soon as I saw this, I went to my shopping cart on mercari. I had $100 in items saved to my cart. Before the change it was like $6 in tax, and $5 ship, so about $112. Now, its $127. Nuts. I do more shopping than selling there, but it turned me off as a buyer for sure.
I would bet that those items if not updated would also have the old seller fees attached. They need a better more gradual release for this so that people have time to adjust.
Thanks for the through breakdown! I angrily delisted my 300+ items when I found out that I was going to be charged the old selling fees plus the $2 transfer fee on my orders already in place. Mercari has since given me back the $2 fee (under protest) but I think the company is shady to roll out these changes overnight. I might go back eventually but (for now) it’s giving me more time to focus on EBay. I have made more sales on EBay this past week than the past two months of Mercari sales!
Maybe the processing fee and service fee should of been split between the vendor and buyer. Because as a buyer the extra fee's that are now there are a big turnoff.
What’s wild is my sales on Mercari have increased significantly since the change! I’m surprised but I’ll take it. I’ll cash out once every 200+ because I like the idea of the fee being
I have heard people saying their sales have gone up since the change. I am wondering if Mercari has been doing some extra marketing to coincide with this launch
Sorry, but to hell with sellers. Sellers pay the fees in every other situation. It’s a tax write off and a cost of doing business. Putting any fee onto a buyer is an immediate not using that business any more. So you sellers can pass your stuff to one another because no actual shoppers are gonna pay those fees on the regular. Maybe as a one off, but that’s it.
I think that sellers are going to be backed into a corner to lower the prices to account for the fee. This will make tit so it's a wash either way, where the buyers are paying the fee while the sellers have lowered the price and are basically subsidizing the buyer fee.
With lower prices sellers can lower their prices ! . It’s just dumb to not do it . Instead of giving 10% to the damn plataform seller will give it to the buyers .
I agree the solution as a seller is to simply reduce the item price appropriately based on its current price and how much the fee would be due to the sales price of a purchase. I sell only on mercari alot of books and some other things and I do just that with my prices.
If it wasn’t for the buyers purchasing from sellers, Mercari wouldn’t have a platform. It’s not fair that sellers have no fees now and the buyers get stuck paying for all of the fees on their end instead. I won’t be buying anything on Mercari anymore just for this reason.
These new buyer fees are absurd. I’ve sold as well as bought. I am no longer going to buy anything unless the price is really inexpensive and shipping is free. I don’t see this platform lasting long term. It’s a great time for a competitor platform to emerge.
I bought from Mercari all the time. Sung their praises to everyone I knew. When this happened, I dumped the app like a hot potato. Im really sad about it, because it was my favorite place to buy from private sellers.
An $85 item on Mercari is a unicorn. I get so put off by their suggestion to sell my item for less than 1/4 of what I can get on other platforms. I know I should be able to ignore this, but it really turns me off. There’s a wonkiness to their site that feels like I am dealing with children or people who don’t speak the same language as I do.
eBay does the same thing, recommending ridiculously low prices as you create your items. I just ignore the suggestion and go on. Not defending Mercari’s craziness, just pointing out it’s not uncommon for price suggestions to pop up on a platform.
I’m a BUYER on Mercari but mostly on eBay. Today I purchased on Mercari for an item that sold out on eBay. Anyway, all those fees on Mercari is a turn off. I will always choose to shop on eBay first 🤷♀️
If they wanted sellers they should just improve their offers system so sellers can send offers better, make bulk options, etc . I didn't mind the fee as a seller at all but they've always pushed away resellers so this whole thing they did seems dumb. And it's absolutely affected how much I buy, I used to do most of my shopping on there for things I needed, now I find ebay is better. I'm not paying a fee as the buyer.. It's dumb.
I did just read about a lawsuit related to a reseller being pushed off the account because they dont support “business” accounts? Not sure how true it is but was a really interesting lawsuit!
Well th ey must lack computers, because computers do it for free. They must be doing it manually, but hand with pencil and paper. Thats the only possibility! 😄
I feel like Mercari’s thought process with this was that if they have no selling fees, maybe sellers will only sell on Mercari. Then buyers have no choice but to pay the fee if they really want that specific item.
As a seller I don't wanna deal with the new return policy, but as a seller there are now no savings due to all the new fees and I have no reason to continue buying here.
I'm sill going to list there, but I think people are not going to buy. I purchased something before realizing the "service fee" mistake. Also, want to add that I'm so glad you guys are back. Missed you.
I haven’t used Mercari in June/ July and now I’m back and shocked with all the CRAZY $25 fees on top of shipping on a $100 item, what’s going on? Please explain, the buyers will not be buying anything 😢
I just had my first sale since the new changes which was $190. The buyer actually paid 5% and not the 10% service fee. Yes they paid shipping, processing, and tax too. I wonder if there is more of a tiered fee. Something to look into. For me, I would rather ship myself as Mercari shipping is not the 25% discount they claim. The issue is you then have to list as Free shipping enflating your selling price to cover it. Also, their so called "shipping protection" is a joke as it only covers up to $200. I had a $765 PC listed, and when I saw that I pulled the listing for now. If I ship myself, I can ad the proper insurance.
I have had the service fee for my buyers be anywhere from 3%-8%. I would really like to know how they are calculating this fee for each transaction. It seems very random, but it can't be. There must be a formula they are using.
When we were putting this video together we were seeing a variance. Our best guest is the lower the value of the item the lower the fee is on this but I couldnt find any exact calculation shared.
My sales have gone up on Mercari since the changes. I don’t mind paying the $2 ACH fee at all. I typically don’t sell high end stuff on Mercari, so I’m usually making around $20 an item with no fees. All I have to do is sell 2 items, then cash out and I’m paying $2 ACH which is only 5%. Great! I don’t really understand why people are so upset by this.
You guys are 100 percent correct. I tried to buy something with my balance and I still would have had to spend my own money. I didn't purchase it. I will just get my money and not sell there anymore.
It really does seem that way. I don't want to say it definitively without proof though. We need someone to confirm that it has happened on their listing
I been making more sales after the buyer fee increase surprisingly. Sometimes I crosslist with ebay/mercari and mercari has been triggering those sales faster. Also - if you just build up to $500 and transfer for $2.... really don't care. Also buying on mercari tends to have better deals in general - when you shop with mercari balance. The negative drama is literally overrated. I make way more money on ebay in general - but I think a shift is happening.
Educate me, please. If I list something on eBay, do I still have a time limit for that listing? I have no plans to be a reseller long-term. Just need to sell some things to declutter and pay off a bill. Many years ago, I listed something on eBay that didn't sell. I think I still had to pay a listing fee. A friend said to use Mercari because it doesn't have a time limit. ??
I wanted to make an informed decision before I did anything so I put my Mercari store on vacation mode for a month so I could watch and see the results from others. Mercari is my lowest selling platform so it wouldn't kill me to stop selling on there. I sell lower cost items over there so my profits aren't huge, so I really don't want to pay $2 to get my small profit. Chances are I'll end up closing my mercari or I'll just keep what I have on there already and not list anything new and see how this all plays out. I did hit the tab they gave us to bulk lower everything 10% so we could get the free fees. But I thought making us lower them was sucky too. Who knows, I'll wait and see what happens
I sell lower end Designer clothes on ebay. I get a LOT of rentals and returns. When Mercari said we'd have to take returns I immediately put my closet on vacation. They're just not worth that hassle for me
3 days is better than 30, but they need to give the sellers more time to inspect returns because 1 day is not always possible. We have gotten rentals on high price items and they usually come back smelling like perfume.
I am waiting for my last sale to go through and I am deleting the Macari app. People don't want to pay all that is involved and want only low ball prices . I just sold my last item from an offer..A little more than half of what I had it orginally had it priced. I let it go only so I could get off the site.
It really annoys me when people say about the transfer fee is 'only' $2. That would be correct if it's a one time fee. It also feels illegal. They owe me that money and they are holding it hostage. I don't combine the 2 issues, the lack of sellers fees and the deposit fee. And now that buyers are paying the fee, we will likely have to lower our prices to make up for it. And how are they getting away with not having a set percentage or amount for the buyer fee? They say if you sell something for $15 + $5 shipping, or $20 with free shipping, the buyer prefers the $20. It looks bad to the buyer to see all those fees. Just about perception and the fact that the average person who has no sense. m At least when the seller paid them, they incorporate it into the asking price, so buyers weren't aware of it. The payment processing fee makes sense because the CC company charges them. There is no set perccentage on the buyer fee and Mercari is vague about it. Nope did not drop by 10%. What's the upside to not having fees if I'm lowering the price AND paying to transfer money. I put it on vacation. It must have worked because my sales since have had no seller fees. There has been people still getting charged but they did not see that the buyer also was charged. It's been mentioned often in the FB groups.
I totally understand the frustration and I wish mercari was more transparent with the fees. It is a weird bit of human psychology that we prefer $20 free ship over $15+$5 shipping. I'm glad vacation mode worked for updating your listings.
Very low price items wont be affected that much its the high price items and I usually buy high priced items. Unless the total.comes out cheaper than other platforms its a no brainer I wont buy on Mericari, like why would I want to pay more?
I am a seller 2 dollar fee to get my money. fine I write that off end of year. sales are slow with passing that fee to the buyer as a service fee. all they needed to do cut the sellers fee in half. charging the buyer is like taking candy from a baby. i take my money end of the week.
@@spendingunder30l have clothes and laptops and a tablet . ebay banned me for saying l returned to many items even tho they allowed me to do it and some times they told me to keep the item and they gave me a refund
I don’t sell on mercari, but I knew that was a load bs. Everyone has been running to Mercari because they actually believe there’s no seller fees, but if they don’t take money from sellers somehow they’ll go out of business.
They are trying to shift over and take mostly from buyers which is a good way to lose buyers to poshmark or ebay. They wouldn’t do it unless it was good for mercari not necessarily good for sellers.
Mercari is going to make the money from advertising from different companies on the platform. Plus they are making the fees from the buyers purchasing.
@@hollyp4579 no they’re not. Mercari was already one of the smallest platforms. Expecting buyers to pay more is going to make most buyers leave. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that they left already because of this.
Thats troubling to hear! And as a seller I am concerned you arent the only buyer to do so! But we will see I am trying hard to not stay in the negative!
@@spendingunder30 That's definitely the right question to ask. As a frequent Mercari buyer for video games, anime (after sifting through the hurricane of bootleg crap Mercari allows on the site), and other oddities, these changes may be something that some sellers wish to adjust to for whatever reason, but it is an entirely different ballgame for the buyer. There's currently no incentive to buy from Mercari and pay fee after fee on top of another fee when I know that what I'm looking for can be found elsewhere--even if the item might be slightly pricier on a different site/seller, if I have to make a return, I know that I will receive my full refund and not lose my money to non-refundable fees. Personal opinion aside, it is a fact that the moment some new buyer revisits their account and sees new fees on an item that weren't previously there, it is highly likely this will turn them away or make them ask for an even lower offer to mitigate everything. At that point, both buyers and sellers are hurting each other.
Mercari is one of the worst 👎🏾 I completely STOPPED selling or buying on their platform ❌ They simply withdrew additional “shipping fees” from my account balance…but NEVER told me which package or proof of the additional charge. They just stated that it was for a past sale. The last straw with them was when I sold a set of legos. The box was slightly crushed…which I disclosed and showed in pictures on Mercari…However, the legos inside were new, sealed and unused. Immediately, upon receipt…the buyer disputed the sale as a damaged item return and provided pictures of the damaged box…which appeared to be crushed even more. The buyer NEVER said a word about missing Legos or an opened package. When the package was returned, the item was opened & 90% of the legos were gone! I have disputed & provided several pictures and Mercari keeps denying my dispute, denying my shipping protection and telling me to resell the item 😑😳 Oh, ok Mercari! I’m supposed to relist a package that has now been pilfered. It was my item and now everyone in the transaction has benefited from the sale…but me…and I now have an item that is basically garbage 👎🏾 I have emptied my Mercari account and will no longer sell, buy or recommend that platform. They support buyer fraud 😤
ESPAÑOL YO NO REMIENDO PARA NADA MERCARI, AHORA ESTÁN COBRANDOTE TARIFAS POR PROCEDIMIENTO Y TARIFAS POR PAGOS, APARTE DE LOS TAXES, CUIDADO CON LO QUE PAGAN.... ENGLISH I DO NOT RECOMMEND MERCARI AT ALL, NOW THEY ARE CHARGING YOU FEES FOR PROCEDURE AND FEES FOR PAYMENTS, APART FROM THE TAXES, BE CAREFUL WITH WHAT THEY PAY....
Yes, I just sold pair of Jordans and the person returned them but I was thinking same thing. Why he gets 72hrs and I only get 24hrs but I don't have to pay seller fees. Plus, it is really a ploy. Seller have always had the option to return for any reason the difference is mercari is now marketing that option asif that wasn't always the case but in the pass if a person said the item is too small they could return it within 3 days. But I'm glad u mentioned about mercari not returning the sellers fee. I'm now mention that when I create adds to prevent people from buying my item just to wear for the weekend with the intentions of not buying. I'm just looking for the wins. I tend to leave my money in my account anyways. However, I would never buy anything from mercari because I don't like the thought of only having 3 days to decide if I want to keep the item. I need at least 30 days. I don't even think to shop on mercari. I don't care how many coupons they give me. I'm determined I'm not giving them their money back once I make it off of their platform. I was doing this before the they made the recent changes. But I like mercari better than Poshmark. Poshmark 20% seller fees are ridiculous. I barely sell anything on Poshmark. I think the new changes will attract sellers which will make it more competitive for sellers and mercari will eventually be over saturated like eBay. No sellers fee is definitely a win for sellers. If the buyer really wants what you got they will msg you and ask you what's the lowest you will sell the item for. We live in a materialistic world as long as things are in sell somebody is going to be looking to buy. In the long run this move will benefit mercari but for the short term if a person gives free shipping right now to help the buyer he or she will make money. but I'm not doing that because once you give free shipping than they are going to send offers trying to buy the item below your asking price and getting free shipping. I don't like that. I would rather just post it and wait until I get a buy or an offer which only happens like 3 times a month. I refused to sell my items at the mercari market price for that item so it takes longer for my items to sale And I don't care about discounting because when you market your item you are going to discount it anyway. I set the price high to give me room to market the price over a few months so by the time the item reaches mercari market value i will have built up a few favorites and likes. it is good to keep the price a little high because if somebody really wants what you got they will send an offer. I have legit got offers half the selling price. but this was a great video.

I totally understand the frustration and I wish mercari was more transparent with the fees. It is a weird bit of human psychology that we prefer $20 free ship over $15+$5 shipping. I'm glad vacation mode worked for updating your listings.
I got free $10 from mercari and when I go to checkout an item, all the fees make it into the Listed price. Sooo dumb
All platforms charge a fee for instants transfers
This is for any type of transfer. If you want to take your money off the platform there is now a fee.
Very low price items wont be affected that much its the high price items and I usually buy high priced items. Unless the total.comes out cheaper than other platforms its a no brainer I wont buy on Mericari, like why would I want to pay more?
Mercari is stupid because its going to scare buyers away for sure. 🤦♂
I am a seller 2 dollar fee to get my money. fine I write that off end of year. sales are slow with passing that fee to the buyer as a service fee. all they needed to do cut the sellers fee in half. charging the buyer is like taking candy from a baby. i take my money end of the week.
Other then ebay and Amazon where else can u sell items
Facebook Marketplace, Poshmark, Depop
There are a lot of choices depending on what you are selling. Poshmark, depop, whatnot, fb marketplace etc.
@@spendingunder30l have clothes and laptops and a tablet . ebay banned me for saying l returned to many items even tho they allowed me to do it and some times they told me to keep the item and they gave me a refund
Absolutely done with mercari. I have already seen scam stories pop up about returns. I’ve had 0 sales since the change
I am starting to see the horror stories I am hoping those are the minority but time will tell!
I’m glad I never started doing anything with Mercari. More sellers and less buyers is not a good business model.
Mercari is going to make the money from advertising from different companies on the platform. Plus they are making the fees from the buyers purchasing.
@@hollyp4579 buyers won’t stay around. Mercari is already one of the smallest platforms, but it’s going to get smaller.
@@hollyp4579 no they’re not. Mercari was already one of the smallest platforms. Expecting buyers to pay more is going to make most buyers leave. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that they left already because of this.
My sales have been nonexistent since the change
As a buyer I deleted my account!
Thats troubling to hear! And as a seller I am concerned you arent the only buyer to do so! But we will see I am trying hard to not stay in the negative!
I’m thinking about doing the same.
The real question is what percentage of complainers actually sell on Mercari lol
I would think the question is how many people complaining are no longer buyers.
LETS CREATE A #"DONT BUY/SELL MERCARI"

YO NO REMIENDO PARA NADA MERCARI, AHORA ESTÁN COBRANDOTE TARIFAS POR PROCEDIMIENTO Y TARIFAS POR PAGOS, APARTE DE LOS TAXES, CUIDADO CON LO QUE PAGAN....
ENGLISH
I DO NOT RECOMMEND MERCARI AT ALL, NOW THEY ARE CHARGING YOU FEES FOR PROCEDURE AND FEES FOR PAYMENTS, APART FROM THE TAXES, BE CAREFUL WITH WHAT THEY PAY....
Wth 😮
I refused to sell my items at the mercari market price for that item so it takes longer for my items to sale
And I don't care about discounting because when you market your item you are going to discount it anyway. I set the price high to give me room to market the price over a few months so by the time the item reaches mercari market value i will have built up a few favorites and likes. it is good to keep the price a little high because if somebody really wants what you got they will send an offer. I have legit got offers half the selling price. but this was a great video.
