VERY NICLY EXPLAINED!!!!! People forget about the triangle aspect of the art especially when the 3rd point is'nt on the ground. I also like the fact he pointed out that the pull is downward not straight out. This will DEFINETLY help other stylists get these sweeps:)!
@laufcra good question. The off balancing happens on your entry. There are some principles you must achieve to have good silat. On your entry you have to crash the opponent, putting them on the backwards lean. You have to rotate them off their axis. if you accomplish these two things then you can begin the sweep. Sometimes the problem happens during the sweep. if your angle is off you could be "reloading" the weight onto their leg. what happens when you try to sweep?
The sweep and trip lines are off and he loses the space he gained on entry, which gives the opponent the opportunity to recover and counter, and which takes more effort to apply. The point of these is to displace the opponent from the space you want to occupy and to tip the opponent so his center of gravity is not under his feet so he falls, usually in an awkward twisted way, onto his head, pelvis or spine, unlike a non-combat judo or jiu jitsu throw where the opponent can fall and roll safely. To see proper sapu luar, sapu dalam, beset luar, beset dalam, puter kepala, tarik kepala, kenjit, angkot, etc., look up Stevan Plinck of the pencak silat Sera system and his explanation of base, angle and lever.
Thanks Silk. Your right about Guro Chad, he can turn it up, lol. Glad you like the video and that it was helpful. We just shot a ton of more video for our channel so keep an eye out for upcoming new vids! Have a great day! Guro Harley
Hello terrainaholic! Thanks for the great comments!!! Your right, it's a hard thing to see sometimes but we hope this video shows at least one of the basic angle and a couple of basic levers to help out those just getting started in Silat. Guro Harley
@MrLAKIWETPU Hello. If the opponent punches with the rear hand, the you push it towards the lead food and sweep the lead foot from the outside. It's the Sapu Luar sweep but from a rear hand punch. The harder the guy punches the harder he gets thrown off balance. I hope that answers your question. I will try to shoot a video to answer you when my video guy gets back from vacation! Guro Harley
I've struggled with these sweeps for years, I can never seem to get anyone off balance, is it because you're rotating the torso that they lose their balance?

Good explanation of where you apply the levers, English, and control points.
By "English" I mean the spin that you put upon an opponent's center of mass.

laufcra because Silat sweeps are wrong . Learn sweeps from judo, or muaythai or wrestling theyre simple and effective.
