It's not that people's potting mix dries out more when plants are root bound. The reason plants are happier when root bound has to do with the roots not being given too much space in the pot.
Most people WAY over-pot their plants. When this is done, this is a signal to the plant to spend its time growing roots, not foliage, in order to fill up all that available real estate. So, when a person looks at their plant, in a too-large pot, and says, 'I don't understand why it's not doing anything for me,' it's because the plant is focusing its energy on root growth, not foliage growth (in addition to possibly being over or underwatered and not being given enough light).
Plants are happy being root bound because once the roots reach a critical mass in the pot, they focus ALL of their energy on pushing out lots and lots of foliage.
And remember, the ratio for plants is 2/3 roots; 1/3 pot. Meaning, roots should typically take up the vast majority of what's in the pot, NOT potting soil. The idea of, 'Oh, I'll give my plant lots of room to grow into' is a mistake that lots of plant keepers make. Use the ratio and only up-pot if you feel like it (or just root prune, which is something not enough people talk about) once the plant's roots have filled up the pot.
That's it. That's the 'secret' behind 'plants love to be root bound.' The vast majority of plants don't mind being in that condition, but the reason people see happier plants is because they see TONS of foliage growth.

I just checked prices here (UK) I found a 1.5l bag for £9 though I think it's actually illegal to sell it over here. Or at least a ban is currently being implemented. I know peat based compost is being banned.

@@TechplantChannel If it was that expensive over here I'd also try to grow my own spaghnum moss. It sounds like a fun, albeit unfortunately necessary project.
My country is houseplant heaven. We're Europe's import/export powerhouse and we have a huge agricultural sector. Even 'rare' plants and their seeds are easy to get, often within 24h. Growing them from seed is saving me so much money and it's much more fun.

In my experience, it's not good for a plant to be root bound. BUT a lot of people consider a plant root bound when they actually are not, and are good to go in the pot for quite a long time. This is especially true in the bonsai world, and people repot too often.

I hate ecuagenera. had a few orders that gone completely ruined. hundreds of shmeckles down the drain.. cos they do not offer refunds (bummer if they say u have to wait half a year for re-ship) and surprisingly are pretty rude to deal with (US and EU, both). the white residue on all plant leaves sucks too, lol. anyway.. loved this video! all insights and shared exp is just awesome. wish there were more sellers that could offer such variety of anthurium imports :) if you find any, pls share with us :D hopefully more healthy specimens arrive too, cos most anthuriums are reeeaal slow growers and it sucks when half of em arrive barely alive heh. but I mean, it's live stuff. can't be too surprised. I wouldn't say I had way better luck with imports from Indonesia. it's a tough business based on a lot of luck too, I guess .)
