Wow if you love koi as i do these beautiful pond's are something to dream of, i have a very small pond in my little garden and four koi I'm afraid these pond's make me feel very envious I'm too old now to make any real changes wish i could have watched this 20 year's ago maybe I'd have done things a little differently, but thank you for the amazing videos and the very good information on caring for koi.

There is a salmon and trout fish hatchery exhibit in Scotia Ca. Humboldt county that I have yet to see it's equal. There is a large cement sculptured waterfall that looks natural with a mural behind as you walk in. Behind the waterfall is the first tank that more than half of that pumped water falls into. The tanks are from the floor to above eye level. The water flows from tank to tank like a river. The 'river' circles around and flows at ground level through the center of the building with a beautiful bridge that you can walk across and look down at the fish from above. The 'river' is then returned through a hidden pump system to the top of the waterfall. Aside from the cement sculptured waterfall, along the walls throughout the exhibit there are other cement sculptures of redwood trees and mural painting effects to make you feel like you are along a river in the redwoods.

I followed all your pond visits and kept wondering in Switzerland, Germany and Holland do they cover their ponds in winter? Here in central Italy to keep the temperature at 6° I have to cover the pond so in colder climates what do they do? Shut them down in winter and take the koi in?
Thanks Paul, in Holland most of the ponds are covered with special covers. In Germany and Zwitserland they use most of the times white balls to keep ice from the ponds. Some hobbyist choose to let the pond freeze just like in nature
I live in Romania, and i have a 10 m3 pond with only 80cm depth and i let it freeze every year, the ice is about 20cm thick and the koi are hibernating under the ice without any active air pump or filter but i use to cut holes in the ice to let the oxygen exchange be done... i use to stop the filter in early november when the temperature is below 10C degree and i turn it on in the spring, after the temperature is constantly above 10C degree and i had zero fish loss during winter in 3 years since i have the pond.
