21:30 Woah! Look how beautiful that country side is!!! I wish it were that beautiful here in the US where I'm at. That view is stunning! Japan has beauty like no other thanks to the people taking great care of it. Beautiful island country! I love these traditional farms that go down from generation to generation where their craft is perfected to a tee too. The passion and pride they take in their work is incredible.
It’s quite amazing to see the father when he picks up the fish vs the sons. All are supremely skilled, but the father just has a way to settle the fish down, they are much calmer. Plus, he doesn’t just pick them up, he cradles and gives them hand-hugs, if that makes sense. Great to watch
Much more survive than in the wild. If you have 800,000 fish selection is needed. The first cull is pure on healthy or not. The ones thrown out are deformed or not spry. The ones that would have been picked off by predators anyway.
I have to say, watching this was.. oddly relaxing and beautiful. I think it was the music, paired with the subject of creating life. It comforts me that because Koi are historically quite sacred in Japanese culture, the Koi are treated with absolute respect and care.
Thanks for the footage, I have a long lasting passion for fish, especially koi I find watching koi so relaxing, I simply allow all my stress and frustration be absorbed by the red colours and allow grief and sorrow to be absorbed by the black colours. I love the gentle handling of these fish, regardless of their size. It's a beautiful video to watch! Just wondering if a hose or water slide would be better for the family's backs? Or would that damage the scales?
Such a beautiful fish with so much history, so much hard work and care put into this job. Thank you for such beautiful culture. The fish is truly a living piece of art.
Not sure if I missed it, (also haven’t finished yet) but what happens to the koi that don’t get picked? Surprised so many hatch yet so little get picked :o very cool
They throw them in the trash. I’m in my second year of fish keeping and had wondered the same thing. I hoped the culled fry served some kind of purpose like as fertilizer or food for other animals. But no. Just trash.
I've been wondering the same thing...I have a friend and they(family) rearing catfish, they do keep every hatchling unless they die off so im surprised with how these guys just trash their hatchling
@@bidav2114, Koi is the rich mans game. To keep prices high you keep the demand high, you don't flood the market with great fish, you only sell the best of the best and you kill the rest. They said 30,000ish fry per batch, and your lucky if you see 30 fish in that pond on the last harvest. I found this very sad to watch.
I actually own 3 shintaro tosai, and I’m in the UK so I’m guessing after the first couple of selection they sell the ones they don’t want! Not sure but that’s my guess, still outstanding quality tho, but not quite show fish, for example I have a great Kohaku but it has a tiny red speck on its fin which would be marked down at a show so im guessing that’s why it was sold on.
Thanks Yvo, The work and dedication to the health of the adults then the eggs, selection of fry and so on is just admirable. I can see how it could be a lifelong passion.
What happens to the rejected ones? I'm only half way through so I hope they cover that... I bought Koi at a privately owned pet store when I was a teenager, had them in a 55 galon fish tank until they were aboht 112 inches each and about 4 years old... Then gave them to a friend who had a pond. I never looked up what kind they were, i remember I had one that was a shiny pearly metallic yellow gold in color with large plate like scale down its back. She was lovely! She was a butterfly koi with the longer fancy fins. She ended up being bigger than all the regular one's. I bought them all when they were about 3 inches in size and about $9. I think the gold butterfly was $15. This was back in the early 90's maybe late 80's.....
I know some fish owners will mix water with clove oil, and slowly add it to a bucket with the fish. It basically acts as an anesthesia, and if you add alot to the water, it causes the fish to fall asleep painlessly.
@@Queenofthatank What was rare about her? She layed eggs twice, but they were never fertilized as far as I could tell. They all went to waist and I ended up having to remove them from the tank, what weren't eaten by the others or the cat fish that is. She was beautiful, I remember in the early hours of the summer mornings the light came through the back window behind the tank and she would just shine. The shop owner didn't like her because she had the plate like scales on her back instead of the normal scales. But she reminded me of a golden dragon. And her long butterfly fins were stunning. He said if she was any other type and color he would have marked her price up. He was suppose to get red and white butterflies, and instead she was the only butterfly he received, the red & whites all had normal fins.

I find it so sad, that if one is beautiful, its treated gingerly while the ones they don't consider worthy are thrown and tossed around like garbage.
They go and be sold for a lower price and go to smaller more affordable fish stores
They are at buckets with no water, I saw footages of unwanted koi toss into ground to die.
