    This was beyond helpful. I found that the camera has some nuances with the digital stabilization. I got mine tonight and found that low light around the house was worse than with my pocket 1, which sensor is way smaller. However, your adjustments make tons of sense. I also started using wide and ultrawide as a way of reducing the crop. The crop works like a zoom that steps the image quality down a bit. When I first started messing with it the image quality was slightly better than a cartoon. Thanks for such a great tutorial.

    I bought 3 GoPro Hero 12 Black camera's, then another one, for a total of 4 cams. Then I seen all the DJI Osmo Action 4 low light videos and ordered 4 Action 4 cameras and the DJI dual mic and other accessories. I returned 1 of the Hero 12s for my money. I'll keep the other 3. The Action 4 is clearly the winner. If I known what I know now I would've't never purchased the Hero 12. This is coming from a GoPro guy who own 4 hero 7 black cameras, 4 hero 8 black cameras and a Hero MAX camera. I'm going to upgrade to the Insta 360 X3 cam soon.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  10 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you for your support. Absolutely, so I shot the video in 4:3 but then dropped it onto a 16:9 timeline. What this means is when the 4:3 is conformed to 16:9 the full horizontal footage is there but there is extra in the vertical dimension that is cut off at the top and bottom. Because of this I can adjust 4:3 framing vertically on a 16:9 timeline. 4:3 essentially gives an extra 25% of vertical footage to work with that falls outside the 16:9 framing. Of course with 4:3 you could also use a 4:3 timeline and not have any extra footage to adjust.

    • @GreatDayForAHike

      Set your shutter speed range to 1/200 - 1/8000 so that the shutter speed doesn’t dip below 1/200. If you do this you can keep RockSteady on. Alternatively if your mount is really stable and doesn’t shake or wobble you can do the 1/48 with RockSteady off for extra light and the footage should come out good.

I'll be using a chest mount and would be moving at around 30km/18mi per hour. Might be using some clips every now and then for vlogging, but priority is to get clear captures of license plates in case something untoward happens. Post processing will be minimal, just some slight color corrections if needed.

    Nice set up, how about the overheating on os4

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Год назад +2

      I haven’t had any overheating issues minus when I did the initial setup of the camera and had a power bank connected rapid charging it. In other words, while using it for recording it has been okay for me even in 4K60 but I don’t use it stationary except for time lapses which generate less heat than video recording does.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Год назад +2

      If using it indoors and stationary in 4K with RockSteady on and continuously recording it will likely overheat after about 20-30 minutes according to the data I see. If using it outdoors while moving or filming several clips and not one continuous clip it will likely be fine and not overheat.

    I am travelling tomorrow without a gimbal, if I leave 'RockSteady' OFF and then use gyroflow at home do you think I will have ok results? Or would it be better to use rock steady? I am going to be walking with it strapped to my chest. Great video btw, very clear and well made

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  11 месяцев назад +1

      Great question. If you’re filming in low lighting without a gimbal I would recommend keeping RockSteady on and setting your shutter speed range from 1/200 - 1/8000 to ensure the shutter speed does not get below 1/200 and cause jitter or ghosting.
      Alternatively, if your filming setting and plans allow for it, you could film important scenes with both options if possible. You could use the settings above with RockSteady on to film a scene and then use the shutter speed of 1/48 (with 24fps) or 1/60 (with 30fps) with RockSteady Off to film the same scene. Then when you’re home you could use Gyroflow with the scenes you filmed with RockSteady off and see if the results are good enough for you. If they aren’t you’d still at least have the “backup” of the scenes you filmed with RockSteady on even if they are a bit darker.
      Hope it goes well and that you have fun.

    When you change the SS to 1/200 for RS, do you recommend to also increase the FPS to 60? Or leave it at 24?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  9 месяцев назад +1

      Great question. Technically, it doesn’t matter since either FPS can allow for a shutter speed of 1/200. I would say it largely depends on what you want to do with the footage later on (if you want to slow it down, for instance). If you do want to slow down any footage later on then 60fps is a good choice.

    • @GreatDayForAHike

      Yes, if your camera will be stationary you can turn off RockSteady and set it to 24 or 30 fps and then lower your shutter to match the frame rate (that’s as low as your shutter speed can go for video). Use a white balance of around 3800K. Let the ISO max out at 1600.

    hi! why does the shutter speed of 1/200 work better with the in-built stabilisation? What is ghosting and jigger?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  6 месяцев назад +1

      This is because electronic image stabilization needs a fast enough shutter speed in order to function properly. A shutter speed of 1/200 or faster allows EIS to reliably function properly.
      Ghosting and jitter are when EIS is on and the shutter speed is too slow. The frames and the motion in the video will not line up and it will look really bad.

      I’d recommend adjusting the shutter speed range to: 1/200 - 1/8000, set your ISO to max out at 1600, and keep RockySteady on. This will ensure your shutter speed doesn’t go slower than 1/200 and should prevent any significant jitter.

      A few different possibilities with this. The shutter speed may still need to be a bit faster, such as around 1/200 for best results, the lighting may be too low, or there may have been too much motion in the video.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  11 месяцев назад +2

      A gimbal is highly recommend for moving shots. If you’re doing stable shots where you are not moving a tripod would be helpful to prevent excessive motion with RockSteady off. Doing the 24 or 30 fps with a shutter speed of 1/48 or 1/60 will yield best results if using a gimbal or tripod. If one is not using a gimbal or tripod then I recommend setting the shutter speed range to 1/200 - 1/8000 to prevent the shutter speed from going slower than 1/200 which will create jitter and ghosting when RockSteady is turned on.

Sharpness -2 Noise Reduction -1. I used normal color profile most of the time, unless I think I wanna enhance it more then I use D Log M. I fixed the temperature later during post. I used the same setup for hyperlapse. This setup is good enough to produce usable footages including in low lights condition. I think I'll buy a gimbal for better stabilization in low light.

      I did not unscrew the mount at any time in this video, but I do leave the magnetic mount attached to the OA4 for two reasons. 1) Since I own other action cameras I do not leave the magnetic mount attached to the thumbscrew mount because if I want to connect a GoPro I’d have to remove the magnetic mount first. 2) It’s easy to lose the magnetic mount if it isn’t left connected to the camera. Unlike the OA4, the GoPro Hero 12 includes the folding fingers and tripod mount built onto the camera.

I don't have a gimbal but may considering buying one, as I like making walking videos. My only question is compared to lots of other 'tests' out there, yours is by far the smoothest and best quality footage I have seen, others are pretty ordinary in comparison with blocky distortion. How are you editing it to look like that? I use Da Vinci and Capcut, so I am wondering if I capture the video with settings like you suggest, to get them as smooth as you video is, what would I be looking to do to in post. You only need to look up Action 4 night footage to see the difference between yours and most of the others out there. Cheers for any help.

      @GreatDayForAHike my issue is that I recorded videos in the low light room, and at the end of the video clip, the video plays weird like buffering. I'm not sure if it's called "ghost" or not. But the sound is still clear. It's like the video plays and stops and play and stops...

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  8 месяцев назад +1

      @kingkong2598 This sounds like ghosting and jitter. This will happen if the shutter speed drops to too slow of a value with RockSteady on. I have found that the shutter speed needs to be at least as fast as about 1/200 in order to function properly with RockSteady on. Alternatively, RockSteady can be turned off and a gimbal used to mechanically stabilize the footage if a slower shutter speed such as 1/50 is desired (as shown in this video).

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  Год назад +1

      Yes, you technically can without a gimbal, but in order to have usable footage later on that isn't ruined due to ghosting and jitter you do have to set the shutter speed range to not allow the shutter speed to go any slow than about 1/200. This of course won't give as good of results as using it with a gimbal with RockSteady off and a slower shutter speed. The slower speed allows more light into the sensor on this camera.

Noise reduction can also be adjusted on the Action 4. Both of these can help provide better results in low light.

    I don't understand why you have switched to 4:3? The video on RUclips is clearly 16:9? Also why do we use the wide angle? Other than that those settings are literally night and day compared to the out of the box ones! Thanks a lot!

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  4 месяца назад +2

      Great questions. First, the reason I use 4:3 and Wide angle is because the Osmo Action 4 only provides Gyro data in 2.7K and 4K 24-60FPS video in a 4:3 aspect ratio and the field of view set to wide. In this video, I believe I show the menu that the Action 4 shows with this requirement for the aspect ratio and field of view for the gyro data.
      If I film in 16:9 and/or use a different field of view there will not be the gyro data available later on. If you film in 2.7K or 4K 100/120 FPS you can film in 16:9 but you have to have the wide field of view. However, these FPS would require a faster shutter speed which equals not as much light so I don't recommend those. The 4:3 isn't a problem because it will automatically adjust on a 16:9 timeline and display as 16:9 on RUclips.
      Hope this helps!
