I am from Eritrea, East Africa. Since my childhood, His authentic sincere lyrics, its beautiful soulful melody and his deep calming angelic voice is rooted deeply in my soul and veins. It means so much to me just like the Williams boys to him! Now I am in the states and someday I will visit his city and the place where he lived. I want to see where his music comes from. I also wish to visit his resting place and tell him my emotional attachment with his music!
A good song, put together in a way that touches your soul transcends genre, border's, race and nationality. I think a lot of older music was done from the soul and today's music is so commercial and politicised it doesn't reach people like it used to.
Been listening to this song as my going to bed lullaby since I was 5, my dad used to put it on for me. Now I'm 20 and I put it on for myself. So much has changed since then... but so little has changed since then. This song reminds me.

This song is potent for anyone that grew up in the country. You really can't explain it to someone who didn't have to spend their nights out in the middle of nowhere growing up.

applies country wide. I grew up in West Virginia and many a summer night I slept with windows open or on the porch with a soft cooling breeze coming off that ol' mighty Ohio River just a hundred yards away. the 40's and 50's were pretty damn good days.

Imagine being a little black kid in the middle of all black Detroit Michigan, loving this song, and catching hell for loving this song? I STILL LOVE THIS SONG!
i'm sure a lot of comments by old guys like me fall on deaf ears but this man tells about life as so many of us lived it. is it good or bad that we relate to his words and sounds, i guess its all in how you look at life. life was hard, but it was simple, you worked hard just to exist, you did your best to get as much out of life as you could, don and so many others like him tell stories that we understand, lost loves, hard times, losing loved ones, drinking, living too hard and all the silly things we appreciated, old hound dogs, moonshine, running from the law, real life told like it was lived. RIP Don and thanks for the memories, and than you for posting music from this man
You don't have to be country to enjoy this song. It is simply a beautiful song written by a southern genius. I am however, a southern woman who relates to the words of this song and to her childhood in the south. I am a dying generation who will go to the wayside as our country sinks into an abyss where no one no longer has any identity. I have enjoyed my life as it was. God protect those of us who truly love our heritage, and God bless us who believe in HIM.
So true ...All genre listeners could identify with this song because it was written and sung so well. I always come back to it. This song to me represents simpler...more innocent times.

A brilliant country song, extremely well-written, right up there with She Stopped Loving Him Today and Pancho & Lefty. A fine performance from Don Williams too. You really cannot criticise this song for while nothing is perfect in life or in Art if this doesn't touch your soul you grew up in the city. Which is fair enough but if you are from the sticks and are of a certain age I reckon having a hankie at hand is a good idea when listening to this tune. Ten out of ten, two thumbs up!

Don Williams is a fantastic singer. Bob McDill, who wrote this song along with "If Hollywood Don't Need You" (another Don Williams classic) certainly deserves equal accolades.

i listened to this from a child it's real music i don't listen to today's country if it's not classic country i listen to classic rock long live the gentle giant
+Cameron Hester Todays country just doesnt have the substance and soul of classic country. It lost it somewhere in the 90"s. Now it all pop and washed out. With the exception of a few songs like "Beer is good, God is Great" and "House that built me". Now we lost another legend last week in Merle Haggard...
Nor are country people. The agrarian lifestyle is almost a thing of the past now, but many are unwilling to turn their attachment to the land loose. That does NOT make one stupid.
On march the 14th in a few days i lost my dad this song remind me so much of him i love you dad and miss you very much it doesn't seem like you left us 8 years ago
That's so true. We have a lot of history, some great writers, artists. Don is at the top of my list. This song so evokes the memories, if you're Southern, or wish you were.
The reference to Thomas Wolfe is particularly interesting. Wolfes writing could paint a picture like no other. Put you right in the place and time he was speaking of, just like Don Williams does in this song.
I had always been a Don Williams fan, but when I first heard this song, I realized just how good he is. This song speaks to me, as it does to many others. If you are from the south, as I am, it really doesn't matter how far away you get. The south is in your heart and soul. Geography doesn't really matter. Thank God I've been back in Tennessee for a long time, and I intend to die right here. Thank you Don for a wonderful song.
It's about a different time. Loved listening to Uncle Remus stories about Ber Rabbit & Ber Fox. Cape Jasmine smells intoxicating. Love the South, big oak trees, a different pace of living.
I grew up in a small Southern town. This gets me right in the heart. It says that Don felt like an outsider in his hometown. I did too; I left too. But I still long to go back there.
*Going back in time to when I was a little boy. To when my father would play this song for me sometimes. Fitting that I should find it again today, on the anniversary of his passing. Shedding more than a few tears.* ~God rest you, Dad.... I miss you, and I love you. ~
I shed a few tears as well. My mom used to play this when I was a child and lived in Texas. This is her favorite song. I still have my mom but I live far away and cannot see her. This was a heart warming
Unintentionally, this is the sound of the Old South and White European Men dying, being conquered, and colonized. My Father (RIP) experienced this song and I witnessed it first hand. Pray the Holy Rosary, beg for final perseverance, and forgiveness of your Sins daily. Love forgive forget and pray for the strength to carry it out. ✝
My daddy never had gin on his breath, and never staggered as he went out the door. Other than that detail, this song is my life. I'm thankful for that Bible my dad held in his hand as he talked about honor and many other things I should know. I've lived a blessed life, had a wonderful career that has enabled me to work among and meet many of the rich, powerful, and famous. But at the end of the day, I'm still just a country boy from the North Carolina mountains.
@Hammerschlägen M I drink, I still drink, but it is controlled by myself as to not be an issue, I have no problem with that. But there was a time in my life, where a part of my family has seen fit to drink so much it affected a lot of things. Especially when I needed them most. That time has come and gone now, and things are better than ever. But I thought of that saying at the time. Your family(Blood or even your best friend) is more important than the party or alcohol. Hence- Blood is thicker than wine.
One of the most beautiful and memorial voices ever to sing. I was fortunate enough to have attended a concert of his. He sounded as good live as on a record.
What a treasure and a gift from God this man and his songs were and are… ❤️🙂 This song feels like a warm fire and blanket under the stars on a cold night…
I was just watching CMT and turned it off.. NOBODY today equals our "older" country singers like Don Williams, Conway, Marty, Jim Ed, Tammy, George, Loretta,, and SO many others that made country what it ,, "was". These younger wanna be's just can't cut it!! Sorry,,, Toby and Josh T. my hats off to you cuz you seem to have it! Keep it up!
Very well said! I totally agree. Lots of great singers out there who get shot down cause their not in the right click and don't kiss up. Remember KT Oslin, David Allen Coe...........
***** I think I'm going to have to save this post you've made Mike. It's the truest truth I've heard in awhile. That first paragraph hit the nail on the head and drove it home. Good man. Thanks.
^yep pretty much lol couldn't be more obvious huh lol. IMO, today's country music is just absolutely trash and represents only making money, fame and looking sexy as f---, at least the shit on the main stream radio waves anyways. In the years before good songwriting and a good voice spoke volumes. Not today. Most any of today's mainstream music is just garbage. I'll take the old stuff any day everyday for the rest of my life. Remember my friends good music has no expiration date. What sounds good now, will still sound good forever basically and that goes for all music throughout time. IMO, most of today's music has no lasting listening value. peace.
Man I just cant believe were losing all the greats!! Now this was music!! Growing up in Albuquerque New Mexico country was big and real, listened to country up till the 1980s and then just sumtimes. Brings me back to a more innocent time and safe time didn't have to worry about terror as much, debarked from a plane on the runway and could just jump on a plane and go anywhere in the USA, Las Vegas was Las Vegas, California was nice, gas was cheap, good red meat, cigarettes 37 cent a pack, gas 45 cents a gallon and we had a blast!!! Cruising down the I-40 in my 1966 Pontiac Tempest yellow!!!
I would say you’re at a Good spot in life when you realize how the simple things in life are the best, family, the lord memories. Not material things that are emphasized today!
This song makes me so proud to be born and raised in the south and remembering all the little things in life if you a good ole boy you will love this song .....legends never die
I grew up in the south and and this song brings me home. I did learn to talk like the man on the six o'clock news but I remember where I came from. Let's add Don to the Williams boys.
This song takes me back to my childhood. Sitting around the fire at the lake with my mom. I miss her so much but this song always brings back the good times for me. Thank you Don!
Just lost my dad we listened to the gentle giant as watched my gentle giant pass. Don sweet voice sure helped. We saw about five final concerts of don together. Great memories.
I always like Don Williams I think he's one of the most underrated singers of all time. Some good music just to listen to when you want to be alone or with your with friends or even just sipping on a few drinks
Listening to this song in my dads Eighteen Wheeler, while he is driving through the ghettoes and projects of St Louis has truly made this one of my top 5 Country Songs. My dad never thought he was one of those good ol boys., but I thought he was better than a good ol boy. I love you and miss you daddy. RIP 1947-2013
I hate what has progressed with time. I think music could have stopped right here. My dad introduced me to Don Williams and I've been hooked ever since. Music now a day's just sucks.
Thanks for that song “It must be love”. I gave that to my dad when I thought things were going wrong with them and I wanted them to reconnect. I was in my twenty’s. They didn’t get it and sadly they divorced. They divorced when I was 30 years old and the hardest thing I ever went through. I don’t know how to say this but I’m very Christian too and my parents were too. We were Church of Christ so you can imagine a double wamy for me. Maybe you could shed a light on this and write a song so I can understand this.

Don Williams is a fantastic singer. Bob McDill, who wrote this song along with "If Hollywood Don't Need You" (another Don Williams classic) certainly deserves equal accolades.
It's 2022 and this music still rings to my ears 🔥🔥
If you still enjoy freedom in America, and Don Williams, then keep voting Republican...
Trump for ever
Don williams had one of the most natural voices ever in country music
Smooth as an aged bourbon.
this is rea country not like the hip hop shit they call country now a days
This song makes my 3 month old stop crying every single time it comes on. I play this video absolutely all the time for her lol
Fantastic, meaningful and heart-touching lyrics ... "gin on his breath and a Bible in his hand." Wow!
I loved him!!!
Eqqd
Who are listening in 2019?
Me and you
ME!!!!!!
Rob in Ireland, almost every night.
Me! love ole don.
Just because the world has run off the tracks to hell doesn’t mean this music is not good
Don Williams was my dad's favorite singer I can still hear him singing this song sitting on our front steps lost my dad to young this is for you daddy I miss you and love you its been 34 years but seems like yesterday
+Jennifer Rogerson sorry Jennifer lost mine 21 years ago and if i hear Over The Rainbow, or Carolina Sunshine Girl i'm drowing in tears God Bless.
Thank you and so sorry for your loss as well:(
+Jennifer Rogerson Lost mine to the bottle. Still here but not really.
+Mark Thompson my dad was an alcoholic also
+Mark Thompson so sorry glad the stuff never appealed to me and found out in my early 20s that my body wont tolorate it in any form. also have pieces of my heart that belong to some folk that i wish had never taken that first drink
i listened to this from a child it's real music i don't listen to today's country if it's not classic country i listen to classic rock long live the gentle giant
+Thomas Laugeness Alan Jackson still have that essence of country music
Thomas Laugeness quit complaining and just listen to old fashioned country . No need to leave a complaint under a song like this
Elmur Fud he just passed away. So sad. All the real country ones are leaving us..
makes me sad
Love the literary references in this song.
Gunter Wisdom me too
It shows that country singers ain't all uneducated Hicks like some people assume.
Nor are country people. The agrarian lifestyle is almost a thing of the past now, but many are unwilling to turn their attachment to the land loose. That does NOT make one stupid.
Me to cus!
Oh, I'm SURE there were PLENTY - I especi*lly liked how he IDENTIFIED "Those Willi*ms Boys" *s H*nk (SINGER) *nd Tenneessee (POET)
Don Williams was one of the best. No one can take his place in country music!!!
On march the 14th in a few days i lost my dad this song remind me so much of him i love you dad and miss you very much it doesn't seem like you left us 8 years ago
He's not gone too far my friend
He's watching you from above friend.
Hi Doretha
how are you doing?
Sorry sev
A country song which references both Tennessee Williams and Thomas Wolfe...priceless.
Howard Helveston Hank Williams....
Yup.
Bob McDill is a serious intellectual.
There's ONE song I'll LIKE by him th*t h*s the N*ME of * fem*le cousin I h*ve - if *NY of you WISH to HE*R this, BE PREP*RED 8)?
“Make your mistakes, take your chances, look silly, but keep on going. Don’t freeze up.”
Thomas Wolfe
You Can't Go Home Again
Amen.
Yes
It's about a different time. Loved listening to Uncle Remus stories about Ber Rabbit & Ber Fox. Cape Jasmine smells intoxicating. Love the South, big oak trees, a different pace of living.
I grew up in a small Southern town. This gets me right in the heart. It says that Don felt like an outsider in his hometown. I did too; I left too. But I still long to go back there.
As a dad, we always regret things we might have done or not done right. I guess God helps us more then we will ever know in raising "his lambs".
*Going back in time to when I was a little boy. To when my father would play this song for me sometimes. Fitting that I should find it again today, on the anniversary of his passing. Shedding more than a few tears.*
~God rest you, Dad.... I miss you, and I love you. ~
I shed a few tears as well. My mom used to play this when I was a child and lived in Texas. This is her favorite song. I still have my mom but I live far away and cannot see her. This was a heart warming
I know you miss him and are glad for the time you had with him. Thanks, Don for reminding us of what is dear to us.
***** Wow, that is odd.
:-(
A message from your Father -- God Bless
Love this song, especially now with destruction of the South. God bless us good old boys.
The song of my life. This will play at my funeral.
My uncles funeral and my playlist everynight
Ohhh dear
😫😫😫
My second concert to attend was Don Williams at the Arkansas State Fair in the 1970's. Love his smooth voice....

Blood is thicker than wine..
What a treasure and a gift from God this man and his songs were and are… ❤️🙂
This song feels like a warm fire and blanket under the stars on a cold night…
Hello,how are you doing
I was just watching CMT and turned it off.. NOBODY today equals our "older" country singers like Don Williams, Conway, Marty, Jim Ed, Tammy, George,
Loretta,, and SO many others that made country what it ,, "was". These younger
wanna be's just can't cut it!! Sorry,,, Toby and Josh T. my hats off to you cuz you

This ,Bridget Scott.Don w is my faivert
Tom Jones sweet caroline
AND THE TOP DOG...JOHNNY CASH

Toby sucks.
Absolutely one of my favorites. 2020 this millennial still knows what real music is 🤙🍻
This is real country music.
For crying out loud! Wonder what they think of some of this crap their passing off as country today?
Very well said! I totally agree. Lots of great singers out there who get shot down cause their not in the right click and don't kiss up. Remember KT Oslin, David Allen Coe...........
*****
I think I'm going to have to save this post you've made Mike. It's the truest truth I've heard in awhile. That first paragraph hit the nail on the head and drove it home. Good man. Thanks.
naw it's not, i disagree totally, save a horse ride a cowboy is the best country song music ever, or, even better, she thinks my tractor's sexy
IMO, most of today's music has no lasting listening value. peace.
Nigerian man here and I’ve been binging on Don Williams nonstop
long as you're still in nigeria...no harm no foul
@@everetts9889 Right?! Nigeria has some of the biggest scammers in the world. India, as well... To all the Nigerian Christians, though, God Bless!!!!
Nigerian woman here
Man I just cant believe were losing all the greats!!
I love this man...His voice is sooo soothing.... Been listening to him all my life!!!
I've always wondered what do you do with good ole boys like ME?
I would say you’re at a Good spot in life when you realize how the simple things in life are the best, family, the lord memories. Not material things that are emphasized today!
This song makes me so proud to be born and raised in the south and remembering all the little things in life if you a good ole boy you will love this song .....legends never die
I grew up in the south and and this song brings me home. I did learn to talk like the man on the six o'clock news but I remember where I came from. Let's add Don to the Williams boys.
My 3 yr old son loves this song. I cought him trying to sing it and I just listen.
One of the very best to come out of Nashville.
I miss talent like his nowadays.
The song makes me glad to live in the south. :)
i live in kansas
roger huff Good for you, good for you. But he says "Live Oak", so I can tell that he's talking about the south.
Mystical Reviewer yeah I feel at peace when I listen to don Williams
everyone loves him he genuine
*Stay there!!! Yankee Land sucks!!!*
Chills every time I hear this song. Hard not to over by such a beautiful song.
The world is worse without him. RIP brother.
I always like Don Williams I think he's one of the most underrated singers of all time. Some good music just to listen to when you want to be alone or with your with friends or even just sipping on a few drinks
This song is making me cry for the first time after I've heard it a million times 😭 WHY IS THIS TIME DIFFERENT???
Happens to me when I'm sad... songs like these make you cry tears of joy like I am...🙂😭
Baconslayer Johnson maybe you’ve changed....
because you're older and you understand more. Happens to all of us.
I'm confused
Confused? Lol u must be dazed and confused BRO
I hate what has progressed with time. I think music could have stopped right here. My dad introduced me to Don Williams and I've been hooked ever since. Music now a day's just sucks.
This song is for anyone saying you can’t hear feelings
this classic was written by one of the greatest songwriters ever in America, in my opinion---Bob McDill
Hello Bev,how are you doing?
Hi Bev hope you're okay??
Thanks for that song “It must be love”. I gave that to my dad when I thought things were going wrong with them and I wanted them to reconnect. I was in my twenty’s. They didn’t get it and sadly they divorced. They divorced when I was 30 years old and the hardest thing I ever went through. I don’t know how to say this but I’m very Christian too and my parents were too. We were Church of Christ so you can imagine a double wamy for me. Maybe you could shed a light on this and write a song so I can understand this.
I wish he could, but he died in 2017. 😢
It makes me cry.
Me too
Hello Stacy, how are you?
