@@lecobra418 It's not arrogance, it's self confidence. To me that was a great quote. His confidence is one of the reasons he has been the number 1 for so long.
It's, obviously, also self-confidence but to be confident about your own strength isn't the "opposite" of arrogance it's the door wide open to arrogance when it stumbles upon ego. So I don't know the guy outside his incredible skills at chess and honestly that's the kind of quote, even landed casually for the laugh, who doesn't give me the urge to know more about him as "to me he seems" (keywords here) like another great talent with a watermelon for a head. @@lecobra418 You hope to be wrong about him, but make no effort whatsoever to get to know his personality. You base your judgement solely on a single quote. Magnus is brutally honest. If he feels he is the best chess player of all time, which engine analysis does in fact suggest that he is, then he says so. Likewise, if he blunders or gets outplayed by his opponent, he also states that his opponent played better than him. When other people win tournaments by playing well, he congratulates them for their great play. He is still allowed to think that if he himself played at his best, he would be the winner instead. I think there are numerous factors outside ratings to choose your favorite chess player. It is incredibly arrogant to choose your past self over countless of great chess player as your "favorite chess player", period. It's not about him being the best it's about the amount of ego you got to have to tell stuff like that. You can't be your own inspiration, the sole fact that you'd choose yourself over the rest of the players is arrogance 101, Capablanca, Kasparov, Tal? Nah myself. It's a bit like wanking over your own reflexion. Is Ronaldo the favorite football player of Ronaldo? Guess what, it is, now. But before he was highly acclaimed he had a favorite player outside of him, Figo. And that's a common problem among "best something" it seems when you're highly acclaimed as the "best" you automatically become incredibly self-righteous. I don't think being your own source of inspiration is something smart or humble it just the start of the end as you don't get inspired by others but yourself hence you do not wish or feel the need to learn more as you consider yourself as a master of your craft (which is true, yet there is always something new to learn) > less work > get beaten. So yeah this single quote sets him as not sympathetic for me and this lack of humility don't give me the necessity to know more about him, also I don't care as I'm not interested in personnal life of players. It was just my two cents. I respect your opinion but I don't share it.
