    The 2020 Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the World Championship match that's set to take place in Dubai this December. The 14-round event is being played in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Yekaterinburg, Russia from 17 March to 3 April 2020. The prize fund is €500,000.
    The players have 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40. A playoff (beginning with four 25-minute games) is unlikely as head-to-head, no. of wins and Sonneborn-Berger are used first to break a tie for 1st place. Official website: en.candidates-2020.com

    Great quote from Ding's postgame interview: "At one point I wanted to take with dxe5 and make a quick draw but then I thought it's not my style and I have to play for the most critical line (Nxe5)"

    im suprised nobody compared this game to capablanca vs marshal, when marshal started his famous attack.
    I remember how shocked i was when watching that game. The fact that Capa was able to overcome all those incredibly complicated preparations was a mind blow for me.

    • @somewhere6
      @somewhere6 4 года назад +17

      There are similarities but the 1918 game was more of a clear masterpiece. i.e. Marshall was going for broke continuously with no compromises. Capablanca was also direct. i.e. accept the gambit, defend, then counterattack. In this game, we have a preparation but Fabiano seemed to change directions and was unclear as to what approach he wanted to take. Likewise, Ding alternated between defending and then inducing more complication and arguably making things more difficult for himself.

    I agree that this is one of the great games worth analyzing in depth. However, it evokes last year's world championship, when Caruana came into almost every game with a prepared attack, but Carlsen was able to apply superior OTB thinking to neutralize his opponent. I think this game shows two things: first, Fabi is easily the most prepared player in the Candidates Tournament, and second, Ding is (not quite so easily but still...) the best OTB player -- when he's not distracted by larger concerns. Against any other opponent in the tournament, Fabi would have won in spectacular fashion. Ding shows how patience and focus pay off. If Ding wins his next one, then regardless of what else is going on in the standings, I think we'll see him again become the favourite to be Magnus's next challenger.

    In the end of the video, Agadmator has brilliantly formulated my overall impression of Fabiano that I got during the WCC match in 2018. Fabiano is brilliant in memorizing complicated engine lines in the opening but he lacks the feeling of the game (says the guy blundering his pieces in every second game). It is the reason why I could not root for him in the match against Magnus. Fabi is like that person in school who is respected by teachers and peers for putting great effort for learning everything and getting good grades. BUT, there are always folks who get even better grades without putting so much sweat because they are simply smarter and they can cathc everything on the fly.
