  • Marine Corps boot camp's true challenge lies in losing your identity, following strict rules, enduring constant yelling, and feeling isolated from home comforts. It's a life-altering test of mental and emotional strength. But hey, they'll emerge with a new skill: the art of letter writing.

I've always said there are four things that truly piss off Marines if you f--k with them. 1. Chow. 2. Time off. 3. Pay and 4. Mail

    • @FighteroftheNightman

Not everyone got mail, it was often a bad time for some recruits in my platoon because they had no one.
So of course we would share anything we got with them during square away time

Total disconnection, no calls, no news, I didn't speak to anyone until the night before graduation... My family cut out sports articles from paper... The stories, teams win-loss records would get passed around for everyone to read.

I’ve always supported taking phones away. The complete cutoff from the outside world is not only helpful but it’s also necessary when building a unit. Recruits should be learning about each other and focused on working as a team rather than their next phone call or text message to someone at home.

I firmly believe that going into Boot Camp in a pretty well physically conditioned state is what will serve you best initially.
If you’re reading this and deciding to go into the US arm services train, and do double what the minimum requirement is at the very least, it will serve you well.

The point IS to change your identity. It's about teaching you to be part of a collective. A lot of people go in as individuals who are out for themselves. They break you down and build you up. So you leave knowing that you are part of something bigger.

The real difficulty of boot camp:
using the same brush to brush the floor, the urinals, the shower, and your clothes..
Sticking your finger in another dude's ear to 'clean' it..
opening all the peanut butter packs during chow..
trying to find your shoes after 'tornados'
the hills aren't exactly fun either.

It was easy as shit. Just do what your told. The Drill Instructions are the god of everything. I didn’t own a computer the whole time I was in the Corps. I only had an old cellphone, and the only gear I needed was a watch. I was Motor T 3533. It was worth it. I’ve since had my knees replaced, my gallbladder removed, my kidneys a lithotripsy treatment, chiropractic care for years, and a hole in my stomach repaired for nothing out of pocket. Only this year (23 years after I joined) have I had to start paying a small $18 fee for Medicare insurance.
