Hey everyone! Livid here again! Just like our other vids, it's in-depth insight time regarding the Heavy class in Space Marine 2.
Upfront, I'll just say that the Heavy honestly needs to be in a team of players. It's a slower class, seems to have tighter parry windows, and is very susceptible to getting overwhelmed by both trash mobs and elites. You absolutely want to have other players creating space between you and the enemies, because that's where you truly shine. As soon as you get a massive horde on you out of nowhere, as you see in this video, the Heavy really goes into panic mode and you're left dodge rolling for your life trying to create just enough space to enter heavy stance and clear out the wave that is after you.
The reason for this is when hip firing, you fire much much slower and clearing even basic Hormagaunts can be really tedious. When in heavy stance, you gain a much higher rate of fire and more damage via perks, but you lose the ability to counter and dodge at a moments notice. Additionally, heavy stance builds heat fast, where as hip firing can basically be done till you run out of ammo. Understanding when to use each of these modes, or when to switch to your sidearm really matters when you're under pressure.
The heavy bolter is very strong at range where you can lay down suppressive fire on the swarms around your team. The Heavy Plasma Incinerator is great at lobbing shots into hordes and killing them quickly before they notice you, but really struggles when you're under pressure, more so than the heavy bolter. Lastly, the multi-melta can clear massive waves of trash mobs in a pinch, but can also pack a punch on elite enemies as well. We only showcase the Heavy Bolter here, but rest assured, both other weapons are entirely viable.
Also don't sleep on your secondary, especially if it's the Plasma Pistol. This thing helps stagger and break elite's blocking stances, do massive damage to Zoanthropes, and help quickly stop elites from calling for help at a significant distance. Understanding when to use your sidearm to soften targets or outright send them into execution state will help you massively conserve your Primary ammo. I've found myself getting low on ammo before, but never once have I ran out when ensuring Im embracing my secondary weapon and executions/counters.
Now when it comes to your ability, Iron Halo, there are a couple things to keep in mind. While active, it will drain charge, but if you deactivate it, you'll begin recharging from wherever you did so. This is important because when it comes to team buffs, Iron Halo provides 10% damage reduction against ranged attacks to all teammates in a 50 meter radius, but if they are standing behind the bubble, you can also block several, really strong ranged attacks entirely before it depletes. This is crucial for moments when a horde hits and there is a ton of ranged damage flying at you, or when later dealing with Chaos. You can also further this helpful ability by picking perks like Conversion Field, which makes it so all squad members within 100 meters regenerate their ability charge 50% faster. Having a heavy on your team helps Snipers cloak more often, Tacticals use Auspex Scan on more enemies, and all around helps keep essential abilities online for when shit hits the fan.
Overall the Heavy class is extremely defensive, and while it my really struggle solo compared to some other classes, that concern basically goes out the window when in a group, so don't write this class off as "not meta" or something. Every class is extremely viable in this game, and your success largely depends on your skill and proficiency with the games various systems.
No solo capabilities is a hard pass. Every top tier class needs to be able to finish everything solo. Playing with others is a nice bonus but if you cannot carry then the class clearly fails the test. If you barely can solo an operation that just isn't it
@@requiemagent3014 Eh, disagree with that. Game has matchmaking for operations, and this class can likely perform much better against Chaos. Don't write off a class or call it weak just because it struggles a bit trying to solo when the game isnt designed around soloing.
Nice job Livid! These are fun to watch and even better to anticipate jumping in next month!
@@LegacyGamingUS I don't see how this is relevant. A class that can solo is obviously even better in team combs. The fact that sniper had an easier time in solo then heavy tells you everything you need to know. Stick with the stuff that works. Don't be a hipster who wants to force stuff to work because he likes the class or whatever. Viability is a huge factor in games like this. My eyes are super focused on Tactical and Sniper with Bulwark as support. I can already tell this is the meta. Don't waste your time and resources on the three other classes that get left in the dust.
Sidenote matchmaking is the worst. It's full of bots. Just because a human controls the character doesn't mean it isn't a bot. More often than not I take AI over some people in the general player base
Gotta say i really do appreciate all the high quality videos! I honestly hadn't thought id be interested at all in playing the heavy but this video in particular makes me actually wanna give it a proper shot. I imagine with even a single real person doing anything at all to help clear space and take out elites (sniper doming warriors or an assault with a thunderhammer doing the infinite light combo, or maybe even just a tactical with a melta stagger-locking anything smaller than a carnifex) so the heavy can focus on clearing out chaff then hordes of enemies will likely be entirely trivialized. I definitely feel that that will more than make up for the fact that its not quite as good at soloing things or clutching out of a tight situation

The more i see of the game the more i want to play it
You can see around 12-14 when things get hectic inside with swarms where the Heavy class struggles a bit and a whole lot of rolling is needed in order to make room for yourself to better utilize the Heavy's weaponry. Great to see the examples of the pros/cons of each class you guys are bringing and the thorough comment you provide re your insights. Great work team. Looking forward to your Bulwark insights as that is the class I think I'm most excited about. Haven't been looking forward to a games release this much for ages
It's more like strategic placement and the shield definitely needs to last longer in a fight I noticed it doesn't take much to destroy the shield heavy is supposed to be a tank dps but anyways I get why things are the way they are it's because it's meant to be a teamwork game even if it's with just npc.
cant help but think this'd go CRAAAAZY with a flamer, IF WE HAD ONE
In one trailer Titus wields one in the campaign mode. Pretty sure we will get some flamers, at least there. Maybe it is a balancing issue in coop pve.
If this game does well/is as good as it looks, doesn't have glaring issues etc. then I have to imagine we'll get more classes and weapons in the future. I'd be ecstatic if they added one!
@@felygu9268there was 1 flamer variant in one of the videos I saw so we get at least 1
I've played the whole campaign and leaked build of the game since early July. There is a flamer in the campaign as a mission specific tool. It wasn't that good at actually killing enemies in said mission. I didn't see a flamer in the coop or multiplayer weapon line up for any of the classes.
It might be a future weapon they add to the multiplayer side of the game eventually.
@@Benthesniperof8 What were your thoughts on the game (without spoilers)? Are you still going to buy it even though you've played the leaked build?
I feel it needs quite a bit more ammo
The fact you don’t have melee you should be able to rely on your heavy bolter for most encounters IMO
Looks a bit weak in general. Noticing how often they get surrounded and need to roll a ton out of the way before they can finally be safe enough to pop off a little.
Heavy Bolter needs a buff undoubtedly the number of times you have to rely on secondary instead of the Heavy Bolter is not good, The Devs should take note.
Each class needs to be viable when you're playing solo.
You're a Space Marine it's very important for the game to deliver in giving you that Power Fantasy experience instead of desperately dodging out of the horde's way when they are relentlessly coming at you.
The ammo thing is much worse on the multi-melta.
The Bolter could use more dps but at least you can shoot for a while without running out.
I will definitely agree or at least alow him to use a knife melee like ogryn in darktide sure ogryn can use more than just a knife however the best setup is with combat knife anyways yeah the heavy guns definitely need more ammo. And i have mixed feelings about the shield I feel like it should last just a Lil longer but at the same time don't make it last too long cause of pvp.
Maybe it's just me, but this class kinda looks like it sucks. The second more than 4 of the little cunts surround you, the game just turns into rolling simulator lmao
Something about the running animation and sound of the power armor stomping around is just so insanely good.
Now you are a devastator, brother.
"Forgive me father for I have committed heresy, Today I hit my brother with a heavy bolter shell"
"Oh that is a grave sin indeed, was he slain?
"No father, he giggled, but I still felt bad"
Finally!! I've been dying to see a good player use heavy.
I kinda feel like they missed it with the Heavy. Yes he does a lot of ranged damage but you run of ammo fast and running around witha sidearm is... meh to say the least. He definietly should have some melee option or even better, have a standard bolter and use it in one hand, since he has the heavier armor. He should be a walking tank.
Yeah, I think he would be better if they gave him a melee option, but not a sidearm.
There were several times where he was either entirely reliant on triggering counters or running away from even the most basic of melee units, when they ran up on him.
Using heavy weapon as a makeshift melee weapon, with wide sweeps would be cool.
@@Ally5141 I'm pretty sure that is in fact a thing in the game, I was wondering why he didn't do it more when being chased by only a few little guys. Heavy even has a giant double super-stomp from some clips I've seen.
His heavy stomp is really good CC when caught in melee, it took me awhile to figure out, but you mainly want to use its aoe to get breathing room in hoards. I can agree with you on his poor ammo economy with the heavy bolter.
Wish they added the Aggressors. Chunky lads with two power fisters and boltstorm gauntlets, pair that up with the mounted grenade launcher on their backs. Maybe even using Firestorm flamers.
I just realized, they should have a similar mission mode in the operations section like they do with Darktide. The hardest missions are Auric missions. They could do something similar and call them deathwatch missions, since they’re comprised of the best Space Marines. Or the Deathwatch missions could be raids of sort like in Destiny. I got all these ideas mayne lol
Yep, we hope they go that direction and add more difficulties/modifiers over time.
If they add a Chaplain and a Librarian class, I think I'd forget what the sun looks like
Luke Stephens is still talking shite about “weak classes”, meanwhile legacy gaming just buttering ‘Nid biscuits solo with every class.
Sometimes you have to get past level 3 to see what a class can really do. =)
Luke Stephens is a full time bad take haver
Luke has had some good takes and bad ones. I haven't played the game so I can say whether this is a guy making a mid class look good or showing even the best it can do. I won't play it often because the no melee just doesn't seem like a good tradeoff
@@maltheri9833 my thoughts exactly. The melee is too fun in the first game to ignore, and it seems even better in this one
Need Assault. Hammertime. Thanks for your work!
Heavy bolter needs a buff imo. It's too weak against elite enemies because it lacks armor piercing which is why plasma pistol has to be used. The drawbacks are already enough in mobility and needing to get into heavy stance. First space marine game heavy bolter was better balanced since it out DPS every other weapon by a huge margin but only while braced. I saw one of the weapon upgrades where it added +2 piercing maybe that would make it more viable.
Heavy focuses on crowd control. And as you can see he does exactly that superior to all other classes.
a i thought the same
@derjoghurtmitderecke yes, but you still need to kill the crowd, not just control it.
No way we already asking for buffs when the game didn't even drop.
Besides of that the heavy bolter is heavily focused on horde clear not elite clear, it having effortlessly deal with both options would be way to good
The game isn't even out yet. Settle down

@@Crispyboi19 fingers crossed!!!!

@@christianblair8663 lets hope so, or a game mode inside a space hulk would be cool too!!!!, but im asking too much, 😂
After watching a few of these vids, 'your boy Livid' is a true Space Marine at his core. ^^
This is definitely the most competent heavy gameplay I've seen thus far. This is my most anticipated class to try, so thanks for showing it off properly. On the other hand I noticed in some of the swarm sections Heavy started spam rolling instead of utilizing the stomp. Is this more effective than stunning the enemies with the AOE stomp and then opening fire? Or was this just a panic response?
Issue with the stomp is to get a good chunk of damage in Ruthless, you need to charge it. Yes I could knock things back, but it will not kill them and I'll constantly be taking significant damage from the surrounding units after the stomp. I'd overall lose more health/armor doing that. Keep in mind, when you have 2 bots, AI aggro focuses on you. In an actual team, this becomes more realistic of a maneuver.
@@LegacyGamingUS Thanks for the insight, ill definitely have to test it out for myself. I can hardly wait to play. The emperor protects.
i really feel like the heavy should step dodge instead of roll
If you think about it...a 3m Giant in Powerarmor with a Backpack rolling around should be physically impossible. Game Devs: He rolls like a Ball!

It's a welcome change for me, I didn't care for the step dodge in SM1 even if it made sense.
@@triage2962their backpacks are small nuclear reactors (basically) that power their armour.
The backpacks are durable, very durable otherwise they’d be a massive weakness since if you compromised it the marine is stranded like a tortoise on its back.

In another life, Livid IS a Space Marine
I've been waiting for more 40K goodness in the gaming space for a long time haha
Really hope they add a flamer for the salamander main's
Probably a class that benefits the most from prior knowledge.
I’m confused as to why you didn’t opt to build more distance and unload with your heavy bolter in rapid-fire mode, such as when dealing with the waves of minor enemies as you were deploying charges or fighting the hive tyrant. Is it more efficient to fire slowly and accurately from the hip, or is it just not viable because it makes you slow and open to attack? I feel like I’m missing something, because if I were in your position, I’d take every opportunity to swiss-cheese the ‘nids, big and small.
You can't really build more distance from wave enemies, they are as fast as you are to say the least.
I believe the problem with heavy aiming as it’s called for the big lad is that you can’t dodge/roll so you compromise a lot of your limited evasiveness and cqc potential for a faster firerate and more accurate shots but since he is taking all the aggro or the majority of the aggro he can’t go all out and heavy stance as much.
@@draketurtle4169
Limited mobility is not the problem really, heavy bolter is the only weapon in heavy arsenal that require heavy stance to boost it's dps output from bad to mediocre. It's meh at clearing waves. And it's even worse at eliminating any higher rank mobs.
And yeah...
Do not blame agro that much. There are plenty of areas where you will be swarmed from all directions in co-op mod so you will agro large packs of enemies no matter what you do.
Legacy Gaming your only making my first class even harder to pick ! So jealous you been rocking this game and cannot wait to jump in with my boys in September, we are looking to get serious with the PVP mode as well. Love the content since Alien Fireteam days. Blessings !

The way he's one-handing that bolter like it's a shopping bag while firing his pistol is extremely rad.
That shopping bag performes pretty underwelming for a heavy Bolter.
Not having access to a melee weapon makes me think the heavy bolters damage needs to be buffed slightly, at least for PvE, that reliance on the plasma pistol is worrying. It's still early days though so who knows really.
The way it is encourages weapon switching depending on the situation.

@@renatoperocchio4508 something to consider: maybe it balances based around player count; maybe solo lethal is meant to be manageable to make up for the fact that your teammates are mediocre bots, whereas with a full squad the game ups the difficulty to be suitable for a full team of real players.i don't know if this is the case but it wouldn't be the first time a co-op experience accounts for player count like that, and it's also something we didn't have in SM1 unfortunately. Density and threat increases with the amount of actual players in the squad, but resources like med kits, ammo, and grenades remain scarce so it actually gets quite difficult at times.

I saw him melee and the guy playing has the option to melee with his heavy weapon as well as area stomp. This is a good video despite not showing the full potential and because it leaves players more to look forward to in their playthrough. Hello all, Holly Emperor, he is so good with the heavy class. Nice play and so many takedowns. Ty.
It's crazy to think that a decade ago, one of the most difficult things to implement into gameplay was the ammo belt for the Devastator Marine, it was so difficult that the creators of the first game didn't even bother with it and the developers working on Eternal Crusade struggled to try and get it into the game because they wanted one because the fans wanted it. It was only in 2014 that the early technology for this sort of object type was developed for video games and Eternal Crusade had an early implementation of it. To think that now a decade later, having floating attached chains, tassels, belts, etc. is just an every day thing in video games, pretty wild.
Wait, you're serious? The belt was difficult to get right? Because of the physics or just the appearance?
@@misterjiggles5041 Both actually. Real Time Ribbon psyhics didn't exist at the time and rendering cloth in real time was equally system intensive. The only GPUs that could handle it without tanking the framerate were the Titans. 2 years later, we had GPUs out that laughed at such things. 2015 saw a massive trchnology leap. For example, Dragon's Dogma, Arc SE and Witcher 3 had actual real time cloth phsyics and wind effects on environment, all new for the time and it absolutely pushed graphics cards. All things taken for granted now, also the technology had been improved and optimised to the point where we have these things in Nintendo Switch games, a console with tech from 2017.
I'm happy that the heavy bolter was used because the last few videos were using the meltas
How do you have this game earlier?
3:20 55 rounds of heavy bolter ammunition to kill five gaunts. What a power fantasy.
2:37 Bulwark runs in front of heavy fire "Stop this Heretical Behavior"
Im torn between Bulwark and Heavy 😅 both look so good
waiting for the glorious powerfist assault class user to show up
I love the SOLO experience in co op mode alot of challenge
Hmm, I thought the heavy bolter was belt fed from a specialised ammo backpack power unit.
What a intense fight at the end holy 😮 definitely excited for this one
can any1 confirm the campaign is co-op? or is it only missions that are co-op?
Campaign is also coop
Not sure if it's just being cut out, but it kinda saddens me that we don't get a sick cinematic or cutscene when deploying into the battlefield. Even just the space marines kinda landing into the zone would be such a sick addition to immersing you into the fantasy.
Uh, the voice sounds like Christopher Lee. I dig it.
Fingers crossed for the bulwark tomorow
Flamer would just go hard on heavy
