Quick update for anyone checking in: the Truth or Square video only has around 7 minutes left for me to fully edit and I have two days off between now and Christmas so I'll be using those to finish it up. I'd say come back here between the 23rd and 25th. See you guys soon. :)
I’m very happy someone is willing to put an HOUR into one of my fav childhood games. I have essential memories connected to this game and even bough it again because my old disc is too scratched 😅. I’m sure a lot of people know what it’s like to over scratch a disc. Lol
They actually did want to use actual footage from the movie as cutscenes, but Nick wouldn’t let them because they feared it would hurt the movie’s success
FINALLY!!! I've considered the Spongebob Squarepants Movie game as a squeal of Battle for Bikini Bottom. AND FUN FACT: This is only one in the Spongebob Heavy Iron Trilogy to be completely redubbed in Dutch. It was fun but the fact that only Patrick's and Plankton's VA's was the same one as the one in the movie was quite disappointing, but oh well, someone has to take over the VA's.
My biggest problem with this game is the stunted potential. All of it’s issues come from clear rushing due to the release dare. Certain parts of the game really shine where you can tell they were having a good time. But other parts are so sloppily stitched together it’s actually baffling. The same I feel with most tie-in games. Overall a very good game, but I really wish it could have gotten a full development cycle.
I just found this channel and I love your videos. Looking forward to seeing more. On the topic of the movie game I feel like a lot of what you said is true but I would also add that partially due to the token gates the game's difficulty is really all over the place. The bosses are either super easy or super hard, there's that tv in the one level that is way harder than the rest of the stage, and generally it feels like stages flip flop in challenge.
Thank you! And yeah, I do think the game's levels are on a mostly even difficulty curve but the first 3 bosses really do mess with that curve. Especially when you consider the game's easiest boss is immediately followed up by the hardest platforming level...
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It seems to carry a lot of nostalgia with a lot of late 90s/early 2000s kids- including yours truly. I'm just glad it still mostly holds up even now.
Welcome Back. I remember playing this when I was young. It is a really good game but it is also hard. It would be really cool if they re mastered it aka rehydrate it.
Yeah, I'd love nothing more than a Rehydrated Movie Game- especially because there's a lot more problems a remake could fix compared to Battle. But as is, I like it.
Omg, thank you! I never expected anyone to tell me that but I'm honored. And don't you worry, you're not gonna be waiting a year and a half for the next video.... 😅
Appreciate it, I've seen quite a few other Movie game videos that I actually really enjoy like the ones from AntDude and LambHoot. The former for it's comedy and the latter for being a firm yet understandable negative take on it. So I consider it a huge compliment when you say that. ^^
Hello again, I promised I would watch this! Fantastic review yet again. I can't really think of anything I would add to this that wasn't covered, or any points I could argue with; pretty much every positive you pointed out I agree with and every negative I could understand as well. Definitely the ring challenges were the low point of the game and I'm glad you could put into words why the Goofy Goober tokens are bullcrap, it was quite disappointing opening a new area only to find out I needed to backtrack and do annoying junk like the ring challenges to proceed. Also thank you for complementing linear games and saying that they absolutely can be done correctly which is completely true, I never understood why people consider the linearity of Movie to be a downside in its own right. They're probably hating more on the token nonsense. Overall for me, having played Movie first, Battle kind of seems like a beta of Movie, and there are some things in Movie that I missed not being present in Battle like the platforming challenges, driving segments, and experience points system. I didn't mind some of the more bleak looking areas of Movie, because that's how the actual movie was, and those areas got broken up by the platforming challenges and such. I also didn't mind that the difficulty level varied, games that have a very challenging part and then give you a break afterwards are okay with me so long as the average difficulty level increases, which I feel mostly applied to this game, even if the parts that feel like they should be difficult (boss fights) were actually the breaks. So I'm still retaining that this game is as good as Battle for me due to its balance of better and worse aspects. As for a remake of this game though, I'd say nah and I'm glad Battle is the one that got the remake. It made more sense to remake Battle which could still complement modern SpongeBob episodes rather than rereleasing a game based off a specific movie from 17 years ago, and I'd rather Purple Lamp invest its resources into making Cosmic Shake a masterpiece. Even if it did get remade, it would likely be mostly a graphical overhaul like Battle Rehydrated was, not fixing most of its gameplay issues. I know you said more SpongeBob content in the future will be put on hold after Truth or Square, but do you think you would ever cover the Vicarious Visions games? I always found it kind of fascinating that Dutchman and Battle were so different in quality on consoles, but so similar on GBA.
Hey man, appreciate the feedback. I'm glad I could cover all my bases without really missing out on anything. And yeah, if I had to choose between another Heavy Iron remake or a superior Cosmic Shake, I'd take the latter in a heartbeat. I was just laying out those thoughts. As far as future Spongebob content on this channel goes, I do give my intentions at the end of the ToS video- though admittedly, I have no experience with Vicarious' Spongebob games so that can happen if people are interested- but not really on my radar in terms of my video plans for 2022.
It was harder and little frustrating but what I appreciate is tht they put forth the effort to actually make nude moves and stuff and did just. Rip bfbb
Thank you! And yeah, I do intend to tackle at least Creature and Lights, Camera, Pants at some point. But after the Truth or Square, I'm gonna be stepping away from Spongebob for a while to work on some other projects.
The backtracking and poor pacing become more egregious when you take into account just how demanding the game asks of you to do the vehicle side missions. Say you want to do a casual non-100% run and don't want to do any of the Sonic Wave Guitar challenges AND the macho time challenges, while trying your best to minimize the ring challenge playtime as much as possible. To simply collect 50 tokens and beat the game, you'll have to do ALL of the normal time challenges on every vehicle level (sans Knucklehead McSpazitron for obvious reasons) and at least two vehicle ring challenges of your choosing. That's insanely strict even for a collectathon and you can't entirely avoid the ring challenges as a whole if you tried.
It was definitely an oversimplification on my part. I have no doubts some people prefer the Movie game to BFBB but back when I was looking into the game's public feedback and how people thought about in comparison to other Spongebob games, it was almost always a high ranking title but also always fell below BFBB. Obviously, that doesn't speak for everyone and I can fully understand why someone would enjoy the Movie game more. Sorry about that line.
Loved the video, just a small thing that was a not so good. The part where you talked about the music, the music was waaay to loud in cpmared to your voice. It kinda jumpscared me tbh xD
I was hoping that bit would go over well. I'm trying to integrate a little more humor into my videos while not sacrificing any analysis. So thank you! :)
You do know there are cheat codes to unlock all task warps and unlock all moves and upgrades, so you don't have to do the token paywalls amd can just experiment your usually range moves on hitting buttons far away. We don't have a lot of 3D platformers since they became unfairly ignored after late 6th to 8th gen and none barely has the same gameplay style as bfbb in evolved form that both bfbb and spongebob movie should be well deserved as one of the great licensed 3D platformers with interesting tactical experimental moves and it feels unfair have the movie game forgettable when i wished it was given more development time and incredibles shouldnt have been made by heavy iron that impacted both games polish. Probably some modding will help improve the quality and missed potential.
Yeah, I am aware of the cheat codes in this and BFBB. And while I'm perfectly fine with them existing and have no problem with other people using them, I don't really like using them myself and I don't think they're a good argument for the pacing problems. Using chest codes to unlock everything or get all the tokens isn't the way most people are going to play and it's definitely not what the devs were intending players to do.
@Baileography is it making the pacing short despite being free to not backtrack collecting tokens and just experiment with all the moves in levels they are originally obtained for more self challenges?
Besides though I am heavily against anyone trying to make this game irrelevant and less talked just because grinding goofy goober tokens kills their enjoyment and lazily believes it makes the game bad, it at least had good reasons why they had to implement it as It was experimental of heavy iron trying to add more side missions to avoid making the game too short and some are optional while you thankfully still have the fast travel system to make revisiting missions easier. Also the reason for grinding goofy goober tokens is believable enough unlike other games than just simply having no explanation of nothing, mindy just wants to prove spongebob and patrick who are more childish into giving extra training into becoming men before handling new abilities, they won't even take that long among six days before Neptune arrives and they can't simply do nothing based on the film's logic. But even with grinding aside the game thankfully has cheat codes and for a very good reason if you want to make this game more relevant to experiment the moves and upgrades (the damning phenomenal reason to avoid this game being okay or fine) in any level for your own self challenge of how to use them anywhere regardless of not needing to grind for more moves you're still free to do anything. The side missions would've deserved to be done better(p.s. just stop jumping to conclusions that ring missions are the worst missions when most aren't when i experienced them multiple times and ones like the very first ones of the patty wagon and sliding levels and the first two sonic wave missions the latter is short, none of all of them are that terrible and hard) if it wasn't for the simultaneous development of incredibles which that is a bad and unmemorable game that shouldn't been made by the same developer and heavy iron should've resort their serious focus on fleshing out the missed potential that we don't have many 3D platformers and why I hate trying different games completely forgetting the old ones most for you make irrelevant. We're trying to make usually this and bfbb their own deserving large unique modding community to help restore the missed potential and make the gameplay better that should've been phenomenal to many people and give these games a sympathetic soft spot to look back into and to not have it killed off by other games since it's too late.
Yes, especially if you enjoy Battle for Bikini Bottom- this is definitely worth trying. And they'll probably never remake this one so you're best hunting down an original version.
10:54 Oh, my Gaia, I’ve NEVER realized that SpongeBob literally has two images laid over each other in this cutscene. But yeah, these are really cheap cutscenes; my PROFILE PICTURE had more effort than this, and that was done in a few minutes. Heck, I’ve actually made PowerPoints with better presentation than this before.
Quick update for anyone checking in: the Truth or Square video only has around 7 minutes left for me to fully edit and I have two days off between now and Christmas so I'll be using those to finish it up. I'd say come back here between the 23rd and 25th. See you guys soon. :)
I just realized how goofy it is for a princess to ask you to collect counterfeit coins from a dancing peanut
Would it be less goofy if I told you that princess was voiced by Black Widow?

Great to see you back! This is definitely your best review I've seen so far. The ring races nearly drove me insane the last time I played this game.
