Hey Doug, Great videos! After watching your videos, I'm considering the Ecotec engine. I am building a sandrail and don't have an engine yet. VW are expensive if/when when you find them. My concern is the weight. A Subaru is about 250 lbs. Not sure what the weight is? Any idea?
The Ecotec is a little bit heavier than a Subaru. It also has a higher center of gravity because it stands up. I don't know exactly the weight difference, but I've worked on both and there is a little more metal on an Ecotec it seems. However my personal experience is that I prefer the Ecotec. They are more prevalent in junkyards and more reliable. (these are personal opinions) I think you would be quite happy with an Ecotec.
I like it.... overkill?? No..... it's insurance that you don't wind up with a fractured case..... and I think it's a great idea... Plus it looks good 😃
Looks good, man you need a propane heater in that garage, I got cold just looking at you lol. you don't need any kind of bushing in between those motor mounts? they don 't make any rubbing noise?
It's cold, but if I'm in the garage with the door shut and there's no wind it's not terrible. No these don't make any noise at all, no vibration issues either. But I haven't decided if I'll do bushings on the next chassis or not.
Hey Mike , it's been awhile the Baja is looking good, I was just watching you build the motor mounts, it looked like when you rolled it out side you were mig welding is that right, if so why not tig. Do you prefer one over the other, do they both have the same strength
Hello Mike, Mig (flux core) is quick and easy. Tig is stronger and much cleaner but takes longer to prep and weld. So it depends on what I'm doing as to which one I do. I Tigged some of the motor mounts but then I migged the brackets for the supports. Mainly because it would be easier and plenty strong.
I purchased the 1/2"x20 threaded clevises with a 5/16" hole. www.mcmaster.com/#clevises/=1bunnrb One right hand and one left hand for each side. Then I purchased right hand and left hand nuts from McMasterr as well. I tig welded the 1/2" nuts to the ends of 3/4" round tube to make the tie rod. Then threaded the clevises onto those. Hopefully that answers your question, if not let me know.
Doug Bug what about the nuts I’ll need left hand and right hand nuts to right. What did u use on both side and far as parts Miscovichg@yahoo.com could u email me a parts list of what u used if I don’t mind
My mig/flux machine is 120v. So when it comes to heavier gauge like this (3/16"). The mig won't do it but the flux core will. Typically I weld with the flux core or my tig. I pull out the tig when it needs to be really strong or really clean. This was easier with the flux core and the strength will be fine. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather do it with mig. Someday I'll get a 240v mig and never use the flux core again.
Sure thing buddy, I got them here at McMasterr Carr. www.mcmaster.com/clevises Part # 4749T14 You'll need some with right hand thread and some with left hand thread to make it work. McMasterr will also have left hand thread 1/2" nuts, you'll need those also. Good luck with the build, let me know if you need more help.
I don't really have a good answer for that. Where I live it's only unbearable for a couple days at a time. Usually I just wait it out. In the near future here I might be moving to another garage. That one I will insulate and heat!
Doug Bug I understand I think, but always remember you need sponge type flex..,from my understanding on mounts otherwise flex with out sponge/bush at a certain angle as in your build will snap..i have just rebuilt a Landrover discovery 2 and used super Polly bushes not cheap but worth every penny..Where I am I'm lucky too have one of the lasts old mechanics around in Scotland..I remember saying and showing what your doing, and he showed me why... Why I asked, answer he said LOOK AT THESE OLD SHIT WE DROVE,NO POWER STEERING, SHITE SUSPENSION, DEATHTRAPS.. FRANK F FOR CHANGE..Xx..and told me bushes are great once torqued Correctly.. Okay I made a little up but your beds sofas are just right for a reason..SO THINK ITS AT A ANGLE THATS LIKELY TO BOUNCE..A BUSH IS A SAFE BET rather THAN A COMPLETE FAILURE WHILST GOING TOO FAST AT WRONG ANGLE..x..just what I was taught Doug..
You're making sense, bushings would be better. I'm designing a new chassis right now and I'm trying to design it with less connections so I can use bushings on the Tranny and Motor. Thanks for the tips.
excellent work, very good ideas, thank´s
Thanks!
Hey Doug hope all is well with your home.
Just got my ecotec yesterday 8-14-2020! Look out for my video series. 😁
Just checking out your mounts.
I watched your video. I can't believe your motor is brand new. That's Awesome!

I like it too..lol
Thanks for the comment.
Woo hoo a new vid!
Yeah buddy! I keep them coming as quick as I can.

Looks great Doug 👍happy new year
Thanks Craig, Happy New Year to you as well.

Oh ok thanks Mike
That's a good idea, I need to brace my frame horns due to the extra weight of the subaru, engine is a bit to wide to do your trick though. Looks good
Yeah, that will be a little more challenging! Sure you can figure something out.
How did u make the tie rod joint / turnbuckle
I purchased the 1/2"x20 threaded clevises with a 5/16" hole.

4749T14 is the part number for the clevis, you need right hand and left hand threads.
Doug Bug what about the nuts I’ll need left hand and right hand nuts to right. What did u use on both side and far as parts Miscovichg@yahoo.com could u email me a parts list of what u used if I don’t mind
Doug Bug what size tubing did u use
I emailed you.
curious as to why you used flux vs using mig on your brackets?

I also am switching over from a VW motor to Ecotec for my sandrail and I am wondering where you got the four clevises at? Thx Scott.
Sure thing buddy, I got them here at McMasterr Carr. www.mcmaster.com/clevises
Part # 4749T14
You'll need some with right hand thread and some with left hand thread to make it work. McMasterr will also have left hand thread 1/2" nuts, you'll need those also.
Good luck with the build, let me know if you need more help.
I know this comment is 1 year older than the video. With all your knowledge how come you never heated the garage ?
I don't really have a good answer for that. Where I live it's only unbearable for a couple days at a time. Usually I just wait it out. In the near future here I might be moving to another garage. That one I will insulate and heat!
Would not poly bushes have been a better idea... Only asking ?..
