I consider Radiohead to be the greatest band of all time, and he is one of the most underrated drummers ever. I loved it when somebody called him a human metronome
His drumming is so understated. It never overwhelms the rest of the band, it just fills its place perfectly. It takes a drummer who really understands the music they're playing to do that ..... And to swallow their pride and to sit in a supporting role
"They use this drummer to calibrate metronomes" in the comments of weird fishes from the basement's performance. I remember reading it and laughing my ass off for like 5 minutes.
Phil Selway's an amazing drummer, but I also think he's rock's greatest writer of drum grooves. I think about all the rock drum grooves that I could instantly recognise without hearing the song that weren't written by Phil Selway (so... when the Levee Breaks, Train in Vain, We Will Rock You, Come Together, maybe a few others) and then I think of ones that Phil Selway has written (Subterranean Homesick Alien, Airbag, Climbing Up the Walls, The Tourist, High and Dry, Planet Telex, Myxomatosis, Morning Bell, Pyramid Song, In Limbo, A Wolf at the Door)... feels like he's produced more than the rest of the genre put together. He is to drum grooves what Keith Richard is to riffs and Paul McCartney is to melodies and Bootsy Collins is to basslines, and the fact he's not ranked up there with those musicians is tragic.
Thank you for this. Tried playing along with airbag today but couldn’t quite figure it out exactly (I’ve only been playing for around a year so still tough for me to play by ear with certain tougher grooves). Appreciate it!
There’s too many. Reckoner, Kid A, Exit Music even, Where I end and you begin, Weird Fishes, All I Need, myxamatosis, Lotus Flower, Little By Little, Bloom, Bodysnatchers and 15 step. The man is unreal.
Putting Phil Selway in the same category as Ringo? Well, in a way. They both are incredibly musical and they bring to the song what it needs, but it ends about there. Phil is way more skilled than Ringo.
Phil is one of my favourite ever drummers, him and colin make a rock solid rhythm section
Same, one of the best rhythm sections. Collin is one of my fav bass players and also underrated!
Possibly the best since Ringo and Paul
@@shanegrahamdrums dude you should do a 5 greats for Colin! ❤️
Other 5 to complete the top 10:
- There there
- Weird fishes/Arpeggi
- Lotus Flower
- Where I end and you begin
- Talk show host (the pauses)
I’ve clicked this fro weird fishes
This is a good list.
Talk Show Host is a pick out. Completely forgot until i read your comment. Absolutely a banger. Bangers + Mash as well now I think of it.
Myxomatosis is just insane. Can't believe you figured it out :-)
Just took some time to break it down. :)
Such a banger, wish they had more as heavy
Reckoner is one of my fav grooves ever
Same

One of the greats for sure!

The scotch mist video really opened my ears up to his playing. So good! Thanks for making and uploading this video. Great job
That's a great video and thank you!
day 5 of learning myxomatosis... currently at 72 bpm... 99 seems so fast! thanks so much for this amazing resource!
Np, glad this video helped.
Love this video, the word underrated gets thrown around a lot but I think it truly applies to Phil
Thank you so much for adding the drum music so I can go at my own pace! Been trying to play Reckoner for so long!
Np, glad it helped!

Wow I’m a huge fan of Phil’s drumming, but I don’t think I ever knew about his airbag parts being sampled and cut up
Omy god phil selway is a gosh darn metronome
Cool video bro ! Phil Selway is a machine !
thanks Shane! I'm a guitarist that's learning the drums and though daunting, this is exactly the kind of grooves i want to play!
Np glad this video helped!
Really cool. I've been a Radiohead fan since forever, Phil is pivotal to the sound.
where I end and you begin and 15 steps are reaaaally good too in my opinion
Thanks for breaking down a great drummer. You’ve captured a really nice kit sound too, wondering what snare you use and overhead mics? Thanks!
Thank you! My Snare is an old Leedy & Strupe 6.5 x 14 and the overheads are Shure KSM32’s.
Thank you for this. Tried playing along with airbag today but couldn’t quite figure it out exactly (I’ve only been playing for around a year so still tough for me to play by ear with certain tougher grooves). Appreciate it!

Thank you so much for making this video! I want to get into the drumming of Phil and this lesson from you it’s just perfect. Already subscribed ;)

Different players, both great!
Nobody gets the groove of myxomatosis right…including you
Ringo sucked, Phil doesn't.
your cymbals sound great. damp, not too dry or wet.
