Also I think most other drummers would have put tons of unnecessary fills in that song but Phil plays exactly what is required. Never tries to dominate the song and always supports the track perfectly
The Radiohead rythm section is the reason Thom, Ed and Jonny could fly so high. As a drummer and bassist, Colin and Phil have been great influences and teachers. Like JPJ and Bonham their greatness is measured in how well they support the others band members.
Great analysis. Have been a big fan of Radiohead since last millennium and can recommend watching their live shows released during COVID. Seeing Colin & Phil pretty much setting the tone together at the back of the stage while Thom, Jonny & Ed play some icing on top up front just shows that they know their roles in making complicated music sound effortless.
Great breakdown of Phil's iconic grooves. He definitely has that Ringo vibe where he only plays what is necessary to support the song. I always loved his Elvin Jones-like rolling swing feel on Pyramid Song
I learned a lot from his drumming when I was starting out; about structure, about time-signatures and about how to play for the song. Nice to see his understated playing being appreciated!
I really appreciated this one. How to play like... Phil is the kind of drummer who's persona shines through what he does. I think one has to be Phil Selway to play like Phil Selway :) There's no recipe. There are couple of things. One, that RH always pushed themselves to new things. And collectively, they grew. Phil just wouldn't have created this awesome drum arrangements without the band. Phil is a great guy. I don't know him, but I wish I would and I know I'm not alone. He even did his own songs and they are great! I mean... respect. Huge respect for what he does and how he does it. The drumming - his focused appearance. Technicality. And of course I love your view, Joe, since you are very talented and know music a lot more deeply as a musician - appreciate it very much. And... Pyramid Song. I don't know if it's the hardest one, probably not, but it was fascinating me for a long time. You meet with Radiohead one day, I know it.
I truly apprecaite your explanations here, especially since I'm a casual musician with zero theory knowledge. But I pick up what I can, and you help my learning. Thanks, dude :)
Great video! I also love his playing! Did I see it right? You didn't use any rimshots, did you? I also realized when I was watching Phil playing he didn't use rimshots either, did he?
Great video! I’ve only been drumming for a bit over a year, coming from guitar, piano, and flute. I love it! It would be so rad to see you dissecting grizzly bear songs, especially the drums. Christopher bear is such an interesting drummer, I don’t even know how to describe him! Sometimes what he’s playing sounds totally random before it comes together into a sick groove, but it’s not. He reproduces that live very well.
Yeah Bodysnatchers is tough to keep going at consistent dynamics and keeping that tempo even is a challenge especially if one has been doing a lot of dancing around the pocket playing because "Bodysnatchers" is dead on from start to finish. There's no playing before or behind the back beat or switching it up. That said his decisions dynamically keep that song sounding loose and not mechanical. So yeah a tough thing to replicate and deceptively simple sounding but not at all easy to play correctly.
Thanks for the video man! Great work….one of favorite pages on RUclips. Any chance one of these days you’ll tackle some of those synth sounds in the new Smile album? Hope so….you’re the man!
Hi Joe, I've been following your radiohead covers for a while, pretty amazing, I tried to form a tribute to radiohead here in mexico but I never could haha, I want to make just one observation in "in limbo" (at "in limbo"? on "in limbo? not pretty sure), you missed the ghost reverb on the snare after the double kick, no offense, everything else pretty freaking nice, specially "where I end and you begin", a delight, thanks
Not watched yet but ive noticed he likes to start his fills on his snare hit? So either on 3 or on 7 in 4/4 or 4 in a 6/4. Most other drummers will play/start them over the last beat
Yeah, and trying to get any other drummer to play like this is virtually impossible. Ironically, the best drummer I’ve found that suited what I was going for and would play more simple looping beats was a jazz drummer.
I've been playing drums for four years. philip selway was one of my inspiration. I think phil is the best prog drummer the world has ever seen. Ps. Do you have listen to the new the smile album?
Phil is super inspirational. I have heard it! I dig it. Although I kind of prefer the live versions of a couple of them (I spoiled myself on those versions) 😂
Hey Joe! Great video! Would you like to make video about Radiohead's drum-machines, electronic drums and probably about impact of Clive Deamer? ( as i see you didn't done it ) And how are you feel about possible Interpol "How to Play" series?
Definitely could explore Clive and electronic sounds in future editions! Thought about incorporating some of that here but wanted to give Phil the full respect and airspace first. And definitely looking to do Interpol deep dives as well.
Thank you, that means so much to me ☺️I technically wanted to start learning in drums, but I ended up taking guitar lessons first and then picking up drums on my own later. I still would like to think of myself as a drummer too and I think drums are one of the most exciting parts of my favorite songs.
Thanks Joe. Do you have any advice for someone that doesn’t play drums or have access to learn but wants to create rhythms like this in drum software? Is there any fundamentals i need to stick to?
Well, there’s sort of two ways to go: like Thom, you could make beats that are skittery, syncopated and almost unplayable by a human (except for Joey Waronker in Atoms for Peace 😂)…. Or you could focus on some basic ideas from acoustic drumming, such as the kick and snare rarely play together, crashes tend to hit together with the kick, and varying the velocity/loudness of snare notes to create accents and ghost notes.
Another thing with the Phil is, despite radiohead mostly being slow songs, he hasn't once to my knowledge done that rhythmic but annoying bouncing the stick on the snare mini fart roll thing that all drummers feel compelled to do on slow songs. Last time that was creative and interesting was in 1846, and Phil doesn't do it so for that I'm eternally grateful

The drums in Arpeggi actually sound like a drum machine even in the basement version, it is wild
Also I think most other drummers would have put tons of unnecessary fills in that song but Phil plays exactly what is required. Never tries to dominate the song and always supports the track perfectly
Even tho it’s a rather fast beat you start to get lost in the song making the beat sound smooth and hypnotic
@@michaelpurdieabbott7743 another drummer that never really uses fills is john stainer of battles, incredibly tight drummer as well
Superb analysis and demonstrations, Mr. Edelmann.
Reminds me of a comment that says “Phil looks like he’s drumming to save the world” when playing jigsaw falling into place (scotch mist sessions)
Haha he does have a great focus face on the faster songs!
The drums on TAMTW have always been one my favourites.
every pattern is incredible but In Limbo and Where I End & You Begin is F-ing sickkkkkkkkk 😅

“Separator” off The King of Limbs has to be one of my favorites for sure
Love love that one!
I use that when warming up lol. Its so fun
I use separator to practice my double kicks lol. Usually at 75% playback speed, working my way up to 100%
He's no slouch on drums, he just knows well the golden rule. Less is more.

Beautiful job Joe, thank you for those explanations, you are very talented…
Unrelated - the prettiest RH solo melody ever is Phil's BY SOME MIRACLE imho
Where was this video when I started playing drums 12 years ago!
listening to Can for the first time really made Phil's groove click into place
Like myxomatosis is sick
Myxomatosis makes me want to learn drums :-)
philip looks so natural and clean the way he can make sound is so fricking cooollllll
Great breakdown of Phil's iconic grooves. He definitely has that Ringo vibe where he only plays what is necessary to support the song. I always loved his Elvin Jones-like rolling swing feel on Pyramid Song
also he often starts fills with a synchronous crash and snare hit.
Yep! Kind of related to what I was getting at around 10:11
Very instructive and I dig the good vocabulary too!
I learned a lot from his drumming when I was starting out; about structure, about time-signatures and about how to play for the song. Nice to see his understated playing being appreciated!
The drumming
didnt realize how good the drums are on in limbo until now
The king of consistency
I don't think I would like Pyramid Song as much without Phil's drumming
LOVE THE SHIRT
Always admired Phil's drumming. I'm not one for delving into music terminology but I think you explained his style well. Brilliant video.
ive been waiting for this one
Well done.
He’s a great drummer
Great singer too from his independent music
Thanks Joe 😊

Man you're tight.
Yeah I'm in awe (as a non-drummer) of the level of coordination necessary to play these patterns!
Nice drumming Joe, I also experience the drums of paranoid android are quite complicated😊
Amazing work! Love your commitment to accurately transcribing their music. 🎉
i feel that the national anthem is worth mentioning as great drumming
It certainly is!
He's an incredible drummer, and you're incredible at explaining music ! Thanks ! :)
Great vid!👏
Thanks friend! ☺️✌️
finally.
Nice t-shirt!
Thanks Jim! 😉
Great video! I also love his playing!
Did I see it right? You didn't use any rimshots, did you?

I didn’t really - I think he mostly avoids them too!

You got the "In Limbo" drum pattern wrong ;) Nailed the rest though! Good job !
Great work man, thanks for video
gran baterista...
This was entertaining af to watch even from the perspective of someone who is not a drummer
I’m glad! I always hope that even my specific topic dives still contain something interesting for everyone

I'd be interested in some Tame Impala sound-like tutorials in the future! You have those sounds down pretty good too

OH MR. PHIL SELWAY, YOU BEAUTIFULLY BALDED MAN. YOUR HEAD GLISTENS IN THE LIGHT JUST LIKE YOUR CYMBALS DO
Top video! Can you make a video on how Radiohead use and set guitar amps like vox ...? thankss
What's your take on Phil's addition to Traffic from Thom's 3rd solo record Anima?
I thought he was on Impossible Knots, not Traffic? But I love both/that whole album!
@@JoeEdelmann3 I stand corrected! Huh... guess what I'm heading over to listen to next haha

Cool. I get a feeling that at times Phil is playing the same thing - but I know that is a false statement 😉 The style is yeah jazzy you might say 🤔
What's the tuning of the acústic set?
Great vídeo!!
