Another thing that colin does alot is playing high up on the fretboard as opposed to lower down on a higher string. An example would be in nude where he plays a high a flat on the e string instead of in the a it really gives a unique tone that sets him apart from other bassists

YES! crap, I meant to mention that haha. That is the first thing I think about when working on Colin’s parts. It really does change the tone.

I just love the way he doesn't milk the crowd but stands at the back watching Phil and keeping time. Also the live versions of Burn The Witch is as if he is playing it thinking 'this is what we should have recorded'.

Great video as always mate, the one thing i think you forgot is note lengths, for example in bloom which you mentioned is almost boring when you play the bass without small rests, this is not very audible but you sure can feel it.
I love that collin is starting to get some recognition, one of the most underrated bassists and a big influence on me

Colin is, in my opinion, the most tasteful bassist i've ever heard. He's reserved, not too flashy, puts emphasis on groove and melody, but also has some major chops he can whip out and surprise everyone with.
By the way, are you using flatwounds? Your bass sounds smooooooth.

I've been transcribing Colin Greenwood basslines a lot for the last couple of weeks for something I'm working on and really intensely listening and it's made me realize even more how integral he is to the Radiohead sound. He has such a great sense of dynamics and feeling, going from subtle grooves to moving lines with such ease in a way that always serves the songs perfectly and propels them forward in mood and energy. He always seems to know what range will serve each moment, when to play higher up and down low, and listening closely to Bodysnatchers, Airbag, and There, There, the subtle intricacies and changes in the main groove he does really blow me away and highlight his musicality. Sometimes his parts go under the radar but then you realize the song would be severely lacking. A truly underrated genius and essential member (they all are, but still). Great video, you really nailed what makes him so good!

This is an incredibly valuable series to me. It seems to me that a huge part of understanding how a musician plays is almost like... low key method acting? lmao maybe not that drastic, but like, at least stepping into their ideology a bit.
I'm hoping we can look forward to a Philip Selway video in the future, but I'm also kind of hoping you might explore Clive Deamer too! Though it might be harder to parse what exactly counts as his "contribution", so I understand if it's a bit impossible.

@@JoeEdelmann3 I think a key takeaway is his growth from an overly busy sloppy drummer to more of a pocket drummer willing to experiment. it's funny, he says he's inspired by Stephen Morris but I don't hear that anywhere in his drumming. He always tries to find a unique beat to play and loves to accent the HH crash on the 3 or 4. It's been fun trying to replicate him... but really hard since my style is incredibly different.
