"How to disappear completely" is also a great example of Greenwood's melodic creativity. Without the bassline it wouldn't be that interesting song.
and eds crazy 12 string almost violin sound
I think without the bassline it could song good too
I can only hear that song once a year otherwise I get fully immersed in depression
@@richardroberson2564 no hes serious
@@tkplg21 yeah, but it really helps to give the song more depth
The bassline in Airbag is phenomenal.
So rythmic while still playing low key.
Airbag what a song! Love that it's played as an opener/early set live too, setting up the magic that follows
yes it has a surprising funky. almost reggae-like bass and drums. I was blown when I first heard the song playing at the CD testing booth at Tower Records when it was 1st released.
@@FARID1870 that goes hard man!!!
Colin is one of the most underrated bassists out there, such a solid and strong player
A wild Patrick Hunter appears!
Agreed 100%
Patrick Hunter I agree with you. Also the drummer
I totally agree with You, he’s such an awesome/unique/& creative bass player, but so underrated it’s a shame honestly. Love Your videos Pattyboy!!!!
omar zavala truth. Colin and Phil keep the rhythm core so solid, even when using complex time signatures and syncopation, that it frees up a lot of the sonic madness that is usually first noted about the band. They are the foundation that keeps Radiohead from being an “experimental” band, despite their experimentation, so that even when the rhythm is spiraling in ways you might not expect you’re still clearly listening to a rock band.
Weird Fishes, that bass line helps take the song to a whole other level
One of my favorites
My favourite Radiohead song (except maybe Reckoner). I feel like I'm on top of a mountain listening to it haha
O R G A S M I C
Damn that's my favourite too. I figured it out on the piano but I don't have a bass
A fun fact about in rainbows, thom yorke said something along the lines that nude wouldn't have worked or be put on the album if it weren't for the bass line
I particularly love "Where I end and you begin", "Bodysnatchers" and "The National Anthem" Colin bass lines....
Jigsaw....
National anthem was actually played by thom yorke if I'm not mistaken
@@uhuhuhuhuhuh3537 he created
bro where I end and you begin has to have one of the funkiest basslines, completely agree
I think Thom created the national anthem one actually. And if I’m remembering it was when he was around 16
I believe his bass on In Rainbows is the most underrated work I've ever heard on any musician. Nobody talks about that record, but to me is one of the best bass albums of all time (at least in rock music or whatever the hell Radiohead is)
Nude, i think has one of the coolest, amazeball bassline that I'd ever heard
Does nobody talk about that record? I see a lot of Radiohead fans (including me) say that it's their favourite album of theirs. It's a masterpiece
Fully agree on all points. I've been an obsessive RH fan since Bends and In Rainbows is my favorite record, largely because of Colin and Thom's rhythm playing.
nobody talks about in rainbows? are you high? lol
I think Tomas goes to Toby Keith concerts to discuss music.@@cagedbutterfly93
His work on “Decks Dark” is some of the funkiest, grooviest, amazing deliciousness I’ve ever heard.
Yes
the bass on the second ‘there comes a darkness’ is brilliant
The climax of Exit Music
I remember reading they used an old Japanese fuzz pedal for that
Fuck yeah
This was nice explaining of how Colin’s using the bass in Radiohead. But with that you also need to talk about how much he uses spaces in his playing. That line in 15 Step works cuz it arrives so late in the song and once it properly does, it never lets go
Completely agree. That's why Colin is a genius and his bass lines stand out. He deprives the listener of the bass, then brings it in at the key moments. It serves to both remind the listener of the power of the bass and make the song sound more dramatic and theatrical
@@lordundhimself1310 couldn't agree more guys, you are both spot on.
A great example of his funkiness is the bass line he brings to "Airbag". The only notes he plays on that track are those that are absolutely essential to carry the groove. He simply prompts the listener to carry the groove for themselves which is the ultimate tribute really.
I agree with you John.
Apparantly thats his favorite bass line to play
Indeed, one could argue that a bass is best when it's playing as few notes as possible, not as many as possible. Less is often more.
His playing on 'Airbag' is a wonderful example of what is not played being as good as what is played. He has a really solid understanding of what the bass guitar can be.
Bloom has one of the best basslines imo. It really defines the song.
aleksiiis Amen
KoL is centered around the bass as the melody. A grower of an album, slowly blooming with each listen. One of my favorites
aleksiiis all the bass lines from KOL are just perfect
True dat
D, A C, A G
soooo good
Although The National Anthem's bassline was originally written by Thom when he was around 19, Colin still adds his flavor to it and it's great. Personally my fav bass line is in the simplicity of Nude.
Colin plays the national anthem's bassline note-for-note, i thought. albeit sped up.
Nude is fantastic, as is that SUPER minimal line in Decks Dark
Thom played the bass on the recording, not Colin.
He was 16 not 19
Teun Putker really?? Do you have a source for this?
The part in the Weird Fishes where rythm speeds up again after thom sings "And Weird Fishes..." that bassline is amazing
Colin's bass face in the thumbnail looks like he's just witnessed an atrocity.
Cornelius Gustafason Colin has the funniest bass faces
I came here just to find this comment
no atrocity, just Thom Yorke dancing again.
Probably just read a newspaper.
I think Weird Fishes deserves a shoutout, it's incredible how melodic that bass is. I think it took me over a year of loving that album to realize exactly what it does.
Coupled with the guitar that gets more distorted over time, and the ever rising tension in Yorke's vocals... the result is beyond words.
I love the bass on Talk Show Host, it just goes so well with the mood and the filthiness of that song, especially the stop-and-start build.
when i heard talkshow host in the nineties it was immediately apparent how seriously underrated Colin is. hes a very tasteful bassist.
The bass groove in “Decks Dark” is essential to the song.
I think the bassline in Optimistic is underrated. It's the most subtle but elegant thing.
function_store the live from the basement version is nuclear
THIS!
Agreed. That outro just before In Limbo is the funkiest thing he's ever put down!
Dave Longden aww yeah you know what I'm talking about ;)
Colin's bass work in Optimistic's last chorus gives me literal goosebumps every single time. It's incredible.
Mastery of simplicity is what makes Colin amazing. His bass lines are so logical and sometimes so simple. I’m always thinking ‘why didn’t I come up with that.’ Just look at National Anthem. It’s basically three notes repeated for several minutes, and yet, after almost 20 years of hearing it it still isn’t boring. ...something showoffs will never comprehend.
Dude, "Talk Show Host". That's the song that made Colin one of my favorites. He's never flashy, but his basslines always get up in ya because he knows how to pick his notes and his rhythm. I mean, "Bloom"... That bassline is deceptive in its simplicity, because nothing more perfect could've been played. Jenny Lee Lindberg of Warpaint is very much like this, another of my faves
Damn, they didn’t include the Nude bassline Colin did, probably another one of his cool bass lines
@Rene Jones well yeah that but it was the rhythm of it and the odd time signature that made it sound cool
Colin is groovy and funky af, I just love him. I love how much he enjoys what he's playing.
The bass on “Let Down” and “How To Disappear Completely” is so enveloping, uplifting, and warm. Some of his best work. I think Colin adds an understated colorful emotional texture to their music, similar to the role that Ed O’Brien’s guitar plays in the overall sound. It’s subtle but it adds that extra layer that pushes a song over the edge of greatness
I just love him on 'The gloaming' in 'In Rainbows - Live from basement' That sounds even better than the studio version... Isn't just perfect?
Separator, Decks Dark, Airbag, You And Whose Army... Colin is such an amazing bassist.
The peak in 'exit music for a film' is epic, epic bass one of the best moments of Colin
Colin’s bass play on the song Airbag was a great breakthrough and a invention of 1990s popular music decade
I love the bassline in Where I End And You Begin, but I'm pretty sure that Thom was the one who wrote it.
Colin is definitely one of favorite bassists, thank you for this!! (I was almost certain you would do “where I end and you begin”- fantastic bass heavy track)
Very cool! I would like to see you do a video for a very underrated Andy Rourke of The Smiths sometime
I love your energy man. I like how you point out some of those little details that aren’t so obvious. Excellent lesson
the bass line in jigsaw falling into places is amazing
Great video! Colin is one of my favorite of all time and you used great examples to prove why :) there's just one thing you didn't mention that Colin does Better than anyone: using silence. Inbetween his funky and melodic lines, he usually add long rests, leaving space for the song to breathe and then comes back to make you dance again. I might Be wrong is a good example of it (but he does it a lot)
That's exactly what i was thinking, the silence it's a very important part of his style.
Santiago Goncebat the bass line in the last verse on Burn The Witch ("Avoid all eye contact...") gives me the chills. This guy is really patient
This. Especially in Weird Fishes. He plays a figure, then lays out, then plays another, then lays out... it's like poetry, what he plays.
Thank you sooo much for this video! Greenwood brothers are incredible musicians!
When I saw them live for the first time ever in Berlin and then in Norway I spent the *whole* time just listening to Colin's bass it was that epic and clearly driving the sound.
I only listen to airbag for the bass line nowadays
and colin doesn't even play for large parts of the verses!
"you have not been..... payin ATTENTION...." to collins basslines
One request. Now that you're putting notation on screen, could you put the chord symbols above the measures so we can better see how the lines work with the harmony. Just a thought. Thanks for spotlighting Colin.
Upvote this shit
Jake's bass vids are always cool. Keep it coming.
Sulk had a bassline that was stuck in my head for years. Brilliant bassist!
Great playing, Jake. There's alot of guys trying to play other bands' music, and do instructional vids, and I have to say that you're the best yet. Great verbal instruction. Thanks.
Your video perfectly articulated how I like Colin's basslines that, somehow I cannot explain, subtly make almost all radiohead songs great. My favorite is one you already mentioned, I Might Be Wrong. My other favorites not mentioned in the video are the live version of Gloaming, Dollars & Cents, and Where I End and You Begin.
I was confused for a second, the initial line really reminded me of Fugazi's "Waiting Room" for some reason
Such an excellent player. Sort of reminds me of John Deacon from Queen.
wgb01001 agreed. Both kept it mostly simple, consistent, inventive and made relevant and cool basslines. Plus, both used (mainly) P-basses! Mad respect for Colin and John...
@@jfv2312 And both had to compete with a crazy guitar player!
I only realized how good Colin actually is when I saw them live last month. Incredible bassist!
All of the walking bass and Jaco lessons have been cool, but this video is your best so far. Been saying the same thing about Colin for twenty years. Nice work, Jake!
Fantastic video. Really enjoyed it. Nice to see Colin getting the credit he deserves.
He's such a beast! I didn't realize how much until watching this!
One of my favorites is "Where I End And You Begin". Great bassline that both grounds and drives the song. Neat stuff!
My favorite music moment was watching Radiohead live for the first time and listening to the Optimistic basslines (which sound better live). Changed my life.
Hey Jake, thanks for curating this video. I just sent it as a way to add variety and spice to our band's bass lines.
Airbag bassline is one of the greatest. He plays with the silence, and that make all the difference. He is one hell of a bass player!
Weird Fishes - Such a beautiful song. Once again, Colin Greenwood's understated groove and melodic invention create the antidote to manufactured pop.
Fantastic analysis of the unsung hero of Radiohead, so well said.
I really like the bass in Optimistic, and they brought that forward a lot in their most recent tour, making the song way more funky.
I’m ready for part 10 of the Colin greenwood series, let’s go!
Definitely one of my favorite bands. Glad to see Colin finally get some cred!🎶
Colin is the real king of limbs, he kicks some asses with amazing sections through almost every song. So groovy so funky so robotic. Amazing af. That's why I love the underrated TKOL so much.
Great video and I`m glad I found it as like most here have stated he`s soooo underrated.
For me out of the basslines you chose it`s the first one from "Paranoid Android" he really carries that track in a "groovy" "mesmerizing way" - plus it's one of their best albums for me,thank you for the video again it`s thumbs up right here!
Love his minimal playing on weird fishes where he kind of parallels Thom's voice in the first part of the song.
This was well done and thought out; always meant to learn these baselines
Can't click like quick enough! very underrated! Love his bass lines.
Great video. Thanks!
Man, if you make a 1000 videos like this...I'll watch them all! :D
You say the things I'm thinking when learning or even writing a bass line...the effect it has on the music...adds a little melody here, drives the whole song, little rhytmic tricks, etc.
Especially since not a lot of praise goes to the not always flashy and shredding bassists out there...
You show these things with some great examples, your bass sounds great, and even tabs?
Subscribed! :'D
He's the modern master of changing it up and not just playing a series of loops. I can hear some similarities with Andy Rourke's playing in the way that he does it in some songs. There's a steady root of a riff, but the line can play off what another instrument or the vocals are doing, but it's always serving the song and not doing it just because he can or to sound flashy. He's taken it to the next level on AMSP.
Got to see Radiohead on Saturday. Colin had two SVT's with 8x10's and an ordinary Precision bass - he never changed instruments. He stood between Phil and their other percussionist and just held it down the whole show. His tone was amazing, and he really anchored the whole band. Life goals.
Those were all great! That line in 15 step is the shit! I was hpping put that in there. Cheers Mate.
One of my favorite compositional bass players. He always knows how to enhance the song without interfering. Other notable basslines: How to Disappear Completely, Dollars and Cents, Bloom, Identikit.
All I need, Colin’s Bass line is devastatingly beautiful
Great video - probably my favourite bassline of Colin's is 'There There'
John WALLISS that baseline is absolutely dope. always humming along to that bass
Go To Sleep is another fav from HTTT. That outro is groovy AF.
Agreed, F**kin' love There There!
he is one of my favourites! what he do in weird fishes is amazing! Great video!
Colin likes alot of Motown
Yesssss
Colin is an amazing bass player.
One of my go to bass licks is How to Disappear Completely
The bass on jigsaw falling into place is also stellar!
Excellent video. Well done! To your initial point he is very creative and smart about his bass playing
I also love the sound of the bass on "All I Need" ... stunning! BTW Great video guys
Myxamatosis is one of my favorite bass lines period.
Also - you’re an awesome teacher!
great work
Friggin love Colin
Fantastic analysis.
Loved this video man.
airbag and 15 step got to be my favorites
@Reverb - I love these videos. I have found them entertaining and informative. Thanks!
Just a thought: it would be cool if you released the audio from these as a podcast. Also would give access people with visual challenges.
So underrated! Thank you!!!!!
That angelic outro section to Karma Police. His part is almost like triumphant horns. “For a minute there, I lost myself”. Yeah I did too
Incredible bass player
Would have been nice to see "The Numbers" since that's another funky line of his! Great underrated bass player indeed. I'd love to see more guitar videos on Radiohead, maybe a video on Jonny's playing? I like the chord progressions they use, very uncommon, they apply harmony very tastefuly in their songs chordwise. Thank you for all the great videos.
Cannot wait to hear what Colin does for the new Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds album!!
I see Radiohead, I liked
I'm not even a bassist but I'm on a quest to devour every Radiohead content on the internet and I must say, I really enjoyed this.
That bassline to Myxomatosis is heavenly
Every player in radiohead is the best and amazing skill, radiohead the legend of tone and soul
Отличное видео! Спасибо
Awesome video! TY
I love how he keeps on playing almost the same thing throughout Ful Stop, and everything else evolves so naturally around him.
"Where I end and you begin" comes to mind as well. But yes, he's a very good bassist, mistakenly overlooked by most.
Paranoid Android was the reason why I bought a bass as a teenager. And also the first song I learnt on it !
Surprised no one mentioned Planet Telex in this comment section. That was like his first really good Bass-line imo.
Hands down underrated. That Myxomatosis is sooo fun to play.
