    15:06 "to the hilt" means all the way... because when using a sword, you use the blade tip and edge all the way to the hilt.. especially when running it through someone. Once you've watched enough Knight movies and learned enough history, say Joan of Arc, Templars, King Arthur, Arabian knights etc

  • @invertwiley1689
    @invertwiley1689 Год назад +28

    You aren't using the phrase wrong. The hilt (rarely called a haft or shaft) of a knife, dagger, sword, or bayonet is its handle, consisting of a guard, grip and pommel. The important bit there is guard. The phrase plays on the part of the hilt that protects the hand and fingers. So if you'll defend it to the hilt you'll use the entire length of your blade/everything you have to defend it.

  • @sullytried

    As a goalie I was always under the impression that I was able to throw the puck forward either to a teamate or out of the zone. I know I’ve done it multiple times and was never given a penalty for it. Justice for Gibson

    • @bryanlane679
      @bryanlane679 Год назад +10

      not gonna lie, I thought the same. I thought it just wasn't done because you have so little control throwing it like that you're probably more likely to inadvertently toss it to the opposition. I didn't think goalies were subject to the hand pass rule because Goalies knock it down with their glove/catch it and drop for their players to play all the time without touching it with their stick first.

    • @JoeyVilleneuve
      @JoeyVilleneuve Год назад +13

      @@bryanlane679 Excluding the fact that there are no hand passes in your own zone, I'm just as confused. Goalies ARE allowed to close their hands on the puck compared to players, and can drop/toss it to a player on their team in their zone. So what exactly is illegal in the Gibson play? The fact that he threw it overhand? It can't be a directional thing because goalies underhand drop/toss the puck to their team mates all the time.
      I feel this one needs a deeper definition/clarification from refs.
      EDIT - RULE 67.3 Minor Penalty - Goalkeeper - The object of this entire rule is to keep
      the puck in play continuously and any action taken by the goalkeeper
      which causes an unnecessary stoppage must be penalized without
      warning. A delay of game penalty shall be assessed to a goalkeeper
      who:
      (i) Holds the puck with his hands for longer than three seconds unless he
      is actually being checked by an opponent.
      (ii) Deliberately holds the puck in any manner which, in the opinion of the
      Referee, causes an unnecessary stoppage of play;
      (iii) Throws the puck forward towards the opponent’s net;
      NOTE: In the case where the puck thrown forward by the
      goalkeeper being taken by an opponent, the Referee shall allow
      the resulting play to be completed, and if goal is scored by the nonoffending team, it shall be allowed and no penalty given; but if a
      goal is not scored, play shall be stopped and a minor penalty shall
      be imposed against the goalkeeper
      "Forward towards to opponent's net" is the part I can see they'd claim, but it was clearly NOT going towards the opponents net (it was almost shot at a 45 degree angle) and it was clearly moved forward to his teammate.

      I'm embarrassed with him, but honestly I also kinda feel bad for him. He was easily the best player on the ice for the better part of the season so far, but even 2 Andre Vasilevskys staggered up couldn't do anything to make up for the laughable excuse of a defense the Blues had. Binner's best performance this season gets thrown in the flames behind a bunch of pylons, so obviously over time the frustration is gonna set in and his game is gonna drop.
      As soon as it does, I know he likes to do these antics to "send a message" and "fire up his team," (reference that sharks game where he took a swipe at EK65 and almost fought Dubnyk, a game where the Blues came back to win after an embarrassing performance before Binner got chased), but honestly, the shit's way too much and is doing nothing more than adding to an already negative reputation he has.
      So really it just turns to embarrassment. It's still embarrassing, but the nuances of it suck for everyone involved.

    For those who are wondering "to the hilt" is an idiom that means as much as possible
    Why??
    Because back when sword fighting was meta the hilt is essentially the crossbar of the handle on your sword, so to puncture someone as much as possible with your sword would be considered "to the hilt" because the hilt is as far as you can go down the sword

  • @TheDreamingFlame
    @TheDreamingFlame Год назад +1

    In that context "defend it to the hilt" might refer to a method of defending yourself with a sword when also using a sword... Usually, to prevent someone from getting to close to you, you'll want to parry a blade away or dodge it entirely, but sometimes you clash blade to blade, you see it in the movies a whole bunch because it's super dramatic and people get face to face and trade barbs. Well, when someone is losing that blade to blade clash and one person, usually the stronger of the two, pushes harder, their blade slides down the other to the point where the blade rests forcefully on the hilt. That's basically the last string of defense for the defending swordsman.
    So, with that in mind, "defend it to the hilt" might mean something akin to "defend it to the last" or "I'll die on that hill," to represent that you'll defend it until you're on your heels to the point that you might die if you falter.
    You likely won't read this, but there you go.

    To answer Steve's question on successful exits by a goaltender carrying it out. There was for sure one two weeks ago, Linus Ullmark did what Markstrom did, however he then shielded the puck crossed barely over the blueline and made a successful pass and got back into his crease, after all that it still didn't make Hat Picks.

    “To the Hilt” has many meanings and depends on the circumstances and context. Defending wise it’s “All in” or “As much as possible”. Weapons wise it can mean driving the blade into something all the way to the hilt.
    It can also mean a last defense sort of thing, as the hilt includes the grip and the guard. If an opponent is aggressive and you can’t recover, the hope is to stop their weapon with that guard on the hilt to push them off or at least deflect their weapon.
    And the more rare chance using the hilt to hit with itself. But that’s sword-fighting and whatnot, not perzactly hockey.

      After such a lecture on metaphors, expressions and sword-wielding, would you mind explaining what is the meaning of word "perzactly", the second word from the end in your post, and what language is that?

    • @LisaMarieFord
      @LisaMarieFord Год назад

      @@josephstalin4906 I made a lecture? 🤔 I don’t mind. Perzactly combines a couple of words and is used in their place; usually “precisely” and “exactly.” In my use above, either of those words could replace “perzactly” in that sentence. (“…not exactly hockey” or “…not precisely hockey”)
      It’s often used in a more humorous context or when comparing things that are completely different.
      As to my knowledge, it is American or American-English and is more of an everyday spoken language. I don’t know how old the word is, but it’s at least a century old. Multiple generations of my family have said this word, but others say it and write it. I think it’s been used in some movies, as well. It may have started as more of a regional phrase, but I have no idea about that. It could have started from a word in another language mixed up. Like so many words, we’ll probably never know. It’s just more fun to say perzactly than precisely or exactly.

Scramble infront of Eagles net and the captain, yes THE CAPTAIN, picks it up, throws all the way down the ice and gets a penalty for it. He ends up costing the game as the Mooseheads would score and win in overtime. Really funny to see as a moose fan

He is very much the human form of that type of song as far as his goaltending. Very good occasionally and forgettable pretty often. Unless he’s throwing a tantrum then it’s pretty funny
