If you look at at the spectrum of outdoor light, you will see another slightly different shade of green - I think this may be the part of the spectrum they wanted to capture as "emerald". I remember reading reviewer complaints at the time which questioned the value of capturing this shade of green when printers of the day, and screens, lacked the ability to accurately display that shade of green. Having said that, I remember seeing 8 x 10 prints a coworker made with his camera which looked perfectly fine.
I'm currently shooting the Sony DSC R1, it may be getting on in years, but boy are the results quite stunning, again, like the 828, the R1 is big, it's heavy, but that's a plus as I can keep the R1 steady as a rock, and, like the 828,the controls are so well placed and intuitive, for me the R1 is just great to use, gives great results from the Zeiss lens and I love it, but I must get the F828, by the way finding a good clean working R1 is getting more difficult and prices are rising too. Great video, many thanks.
But you get the cool Flippy screen that can go on top of the camera :) that's pretty neat. I want the R1 one day. Would be cool to see how they jumped from this camera to that one.
@@mck_827 If you can turn the camera on and use it with the charger connected, it's the battery is shot. If you can't, its the charger. Fortunately both items are still available on e-bay etc for a reasonable cost. You can also use a USB cable and a phone charger, power bank or a computer to charge it.
@@mck_827 Most older cameras (even some new ones) unfortunately don't accept charge using the USB port; you'll most likely have to find the charger that came with it. Nice find! Always love the odd shaped cameras, though I am less of a Sony fan with their magicgate cards! Love the look of it and the results are really nice!
Hi there, you were lucky to get a F717 for $30. Here in the UK this whole range of cameras from Sony sell on eBay for crazy prices, around $100 to $150 and not always in good condition. I've just aquired the F707 in great condition and fully working. Scarcity in the UK certainly demands higher prices. The F717 is next on my list, if I can find a good clean fully working one. Regards Rob.
Hey! I fell into your rare bit hole when searching for a Nikon body with the focus motor built into the body and I saw your review of the Nikon D80 which I bought on line in like new condition (762 actual shutter acuations!) for $150!! I loved what you say about CCD sensors and their color renditions and after taking the D80 out for a whirl I just want to confirm what you say about the warmth and naturalness of the resulting captures! I'm just using full Auto for now while I get comfortable with it. Now I find your Sony F828 vid and want one of these now too!
Coincidently, I wanted to do some night work using my hunting infrared vision equipment, the trouble was the images captured by a camera focused on the screen were terrible. It was then that I thought, if I dig out my oldish Sony camcorder with a Ziess zoom lens, which does have an infrared night shot mode but with a very weak illuminating lamp, I could use the hunting lamp to boost the infrared capture of the camcorder. It works just fine.
Purple fringe frustration, I'm now staring down my Pentax Q on the camera shelf in my living room.....I know that all too well. But awesome colors none the less out of this awesome camera! I think you'd get a kick out of my Fuji Finepix Pro S2, it does have a similar saturated look as well.
I got one in 2004 and was initially impressed by the build and general picture quality. The built in laser made focusing in poor light easy. Sadly I take lots of contre- jour and like to catch the sparkle in waterfalls and angry seas. This led to lots of purple fringing which was then a pain to remove in post. Got rid at a good price and got an R1 which I still have. Score? 828 1 year R1 19 years - enough said!
Thanks for your video! I own one of these cameras and I really love it! It was given to me by a friend that has since passed on so it has special significance for me. I really enjoy shooting with it. You mentioned you are in south Texas. I live in Corpus Christi. Where do you live?
I'm in San Antonio! Small world. We have visited Corpus a few times on the way to south padre island. Love the beach :) Haven't done much in Corpus proper, though.
I wonder how color clipping behaves with this RGBE sensor- For example the bright blue sky clipping to cyan at 7:08, how would that look on a Sony F-828?
These are straight out of the camera - I like to do that for these videos because it's a more natural representation of what the sensor/processor is doing. Actually, I do it because I'm lazy when it comes to post-processing :)
I am in full spectrum mode this week after I had modded my EOS M. But now looking for other fun things, like a DSC-V1 or a F717, which eventually lead me to this video. With the sample photos at the beginning of the video before you mentioned the RGBE sensor, I could already tell the sensor process color differently than other SONY CCD sensor. But the question is, can this also do the magnet hot mirror trick???
1st Sony "CyberShot" with RAW, 2003. Sadly, noise was really bad >ISO 64. Even at base ISO, some noise level. Al-mg alloy build. CAs have been on a high level, too. The predecessor of the 2005 R1.
I just got my hands on one which I got passed down and it hasn’t been used since 2003. I have the manual and I’m trying to figure out how to properly use all its features and I have a couple of questions if anyone can answer if they also have this camera. The little window to look through straight to the lens is pitch black and I have no idea why that is, if it’s broken or if I have to open it somehow. One more thing is, I love taking blurry photos, especially with lights where it’s not clear and you can see the light create that circle of its color and as soon as I press the picture button it focuses on its own and takes all the blurriness away I wonder if that’s something I can turn off. Another thing is when I use the flash it’s wayyy to bright and I don’t know if I can adjust the brightness, also once I take a picture it flashes a couple of times before taking the picture and I also don’t know if that can be turned off too or if it’s a feature. Lastly I just wanted to know since I’m just getting into photography if I want both the color of the blue sky and the color of the building underneath for example how can I get it to focus on both because anytime there’s day light the sky comes out white and in bright lighting everything comes out white actually and it looks awful. I want to get both the colors and get it to focus on them both but I don’t know if it’s possible and how do I stop everything looking bright white. Is there anyway to adjust how bright or how dark a picture will come out with a feature of the camera regardless of the lighting ? I hope I made sense and that someone who isn’t too bored to read all of this can help haha Thank you !!!
If it's the 828, there's a button to switch between the viewfinder(the little window) and the view screen. If you don't flip it than it's by default using the view screen.
I love this camera. My wife got me one as a gift from the local pawn shop last year. And man does this thing really perform! I just wish I knew where to get a lens hood for the thing. I'm scared to death of scratching the front of the lens. What I should say is that I'm looking for a lens Hood as close to OEM as I can get. Because the thread on hoods show up in the corners of the picture at its widest angle
I just tried searching and I couldn't find one. I even tried looking to see if someone has made a 3d model for one, but it appears not. If I was better at my modeling I would design one for you, but my skills are pretty basic :) you're probably best searching for used f828s and hoping to strike a deal with one as a backup, it steak the hood and resell it haha.

From what I read on your website... the real mode could deliver a wider gamut on every photo.... but.. I do not understand why Sony use a Non apochromatic desing in a new sensor... for me a REEB ( red, emerald, emerald and deep blue ) could give better sensitivity and resolution ( as most optics are better corrected for green ).. thanks for share. @@dedclownsRfunny if you can find some, there were battery packs that screwed to the bottom of the camera (they threaded into the tripod mount) and connected with a short cable. They’re hard to find but they extend the battery life a LOT. I got a few of them with my dimage 7i and love it

Based on your review I just purchased a F828 camera on eBay. You can download a pdf of the instruction manual from Sony www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/3084/30849961M.pdf. @@snappiness it formats in Fats32 so anything more than 32GB is going to cause issues, 32GB should be 16000 photos in JPEG and 2800 photos in raw mode.
You found one! Welcome aboard haha! Have you seen the Canon variant of this bad boy? I'd like to look into it more as I'm not certain if it's using the same exact sensor as the f828, or if Canon produced their own 8 megapixel rgbe sensor
I have the PowerShot Pro1 which has the exact same sensor but with RGB filter array on it (according to what I've read online). Is there another Canon you're talking about? 😲
I personally like the Sony more, just because it's so quirky and you get that infrared mode (I talk about it in another video). But I think the colors straight out of the Canon are probably better. It's tough to say which lens is better - I haven't done any clinical side-by-side tests, but I like them both too.
@snappiness A note of possible interest:, this camera (which I have and love) has a cold mirror you can temporarily pop out of place with a neodymium magnet. With various filtration and a custom white balance,, you have a camera that can also shoot UV or infrared….restarting it mechanically returns everything to normal optical light, after another white balance…
It came out the same time as the D50 1/2 sensor 28-300mm 1,000 flash synch and looks like a mini DSLR. There is a s9000 and s9100. It was a flag ship glorified point and shoot with a similar price to the dslrs of the time. They're about $90 these days. I still might buy one to match my S5 Pro
@@photobyTaps how does it compare to the S5 pro for color rendition? I have the S2 and absolutely love it. I posted a thread on Snappys forum about it. I see alot of them hovering around my local thift shops
The reviews I've read look very good even in low light mode. It's the same size as my D50 with 1855. I'd like one as a second general purpose shooter due to its iFlash. I usually have a 70300 or 80400 in my S5. I liked the S2 but stayed with the S5 due to better batteries
I've shot a lot of cameras, and don't keep very many, but this one has stayed with me. It's that cool. Glad you're picking one up. And yeah lofi video is right 😆 you can even take infrared video 👍 check out my video about the IR hack
I don't know shiiii about shiiii but aren't these underexposed with contrast cranked up? I like the colours though, even if they might be the result of being underexposed :-d
A lot of them I did shoot underexposed to avoid the nasty fringing. Probably underexposed a few shots I didn't need to while I was at it. The contrast is left to default mode on the jpeg profile though, along with the other settings, and all the shots are straight out of camera JPEGs.
I like to underexpose too, I only because it's easier to pull detail out of a shadow in post than it is to fix a blown highlight. If it helps with color fringing too, that's a bonus.

I have noticed the jump in R1 cost. A few years ago I almost picked one up for $50 but let it pass... Kicking myself now. Cool camera!!
Fantastic video yet again. So eager to compare notes once I get more familiar with my R1. Sadly no rotating body on that one though.
But you get the cool Flippy screen that can go on top of the camera :) that's pretty neat. I want the R1 one day. Would be cool to see how they jumped from this camera to that one.
I still have mine, the purple hazing stopped me using it so it went back in the box. Looks like new still.
I found my old one and I don't know how to charge it, I put USB in and it won't charge maybe charge battery but I don't know what I need
If I'm not mistaken, yours might have come with a wall adapter you put into the camera instead of one you drop the battery into. Hope it helped!
@2:20 immediately went to eBay and hit the buy now button… whoa! And the image quality 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾
That thing puts out some nice results! Another great watch 👌
Nice find! Always love the odd shaped cameras, though I am less of a Sony fan with their magicgate cards! Love the look of it and the results are really nice!
Very entertaining. Found your channel when I'm searching for the Pentax Q. Just subbed!
The f828 and R1 have climbed in price a bit over here, but the f717 has kept quite low! Good luck on your search!
Imagine a modern camera with this tilting design, APS-C sensor, and a fixed 24-70 lens.
I still love my 828.
Hmm I seem to remember this with my Q too 😆 good reminder about the Fuji. That was on my list last year and never got around to it.
Once you learn your camera, I'll take buttons over menu diving any day, especially when trying to work fast.
I wonder how color clipping behaves with this RGBE sensor-
For example the bright blue sky clipping to cyan at 7:08, how would that look on a Sony F-828?
Wow. Do you post process, or are these straight out of the camera?
I'm quite impressed by the colours and bokeh.
These are straight out of the camera - I like to do that for these videos because it's a more natural representation of what the sensor/processor is doing. Actually, I do it because I'm lazy when it comes to post-processing :)
Oh the hours I spend looking for freak cameras 😂 I will continue to enable
I am in full spectrum mode this week after I had modded my EOS M. But now looking for other fun things, like a DSC-V1 or a F717, which eventually lead me to this video. With the sample photos at the beginning of the video before you mentioned the RGBE sensor, I could already tell the sensor process color differently than other SONY CCD sensor. But the question is, can this also do the magnet hot mirror trick???
It does, and he just added a video...
1st Sony "CyberShot" with RAW, 2003. Sadly, noise was really bad >ISO 64. Even at base ISO, some noise level. Al-mg alloy build. CAs have been on a high level, too. The predecessor of the 2005 R1.
Just grabbed one for USD157 with shipping and tax. Seemed to be a good deal. Comes with the original box and software.
I hope I made sense and that someone who isn’t too bored to read all of this can help haha
Thank you !!!
Hi. What is the max compatible memory card (type) for this f828 camera?
Nice! I just got in a couple of old 5D cameras, nope not Canon. lol As always keep up the good work.
Minolta?
@@snappiness yes sir with a 11-18mm pretty stoked about trying it out.
@@leehaze1 Wow, sweet find! If you make a vid about it I'll check it out!
my k10d is on the way to me as i write this. had a canon powershot s40 before, but the power switch broke and now it doesnt work anymore
One of my all-time favorite cameras! I love using vintage pentax/m42 glass on it, or pretty much any glass really. It's just a good solid camera. Enjoy it.
@@snappiness im more interested in film era screw drive af lenses. For m42 mount i have a praktica/revue ML and a porst reflex c tl. The latter had a broken mirror which i will replace with this mirror vinyl foil stuff.
@@EstelonAgarwaen well you know I can recommend the F series, of course ;) and the FA lenses I've used have also been nice. Lots to choose from between those two. Throw in third party and lots more.
I have to ask ! What do you recommend? Sony F-828 or the Olympus E-500/300. Also you mentioned the starburst effect on this camera when stopped down, what is the aperture used on the Sony to get that effect ? Thx
Puck one up at goodwill for $35 a while ago
From what I read on your website... the real mode could deliver a wider gamut on every photo.... but.. I do not understand why Sony use a Non apochromatic desing in a new sensor... for me a REEB ( red, emerald, emerald and deep blue ) could give better sensitivity and resolution ( as most optics are better corrected for green ).. thanks for share.
Any change to convert that RAW file to the original CFA files?
Does the original Sony Software from Sony convert SRF files to Tiff or dng ?... thanks for share
I haven't used the Sony software, but all the editors I have used so far support the SRF format which is nice.
Been loving the Minolta Dimage series lately, particularly the Dimage 7. The results I've been getting have blown me away. might be worth checking out!
I bought a mystery box of random camera stuff for I think $80AUD and there were two Dimage 7i inside!
Like you, I found the images quite incredible!
Only downside is the battery usage. I found that rechargeable types are the ones to use, but even they seem to lose contact here and there
@@dedclownsRfunny if you can find some, there were battery packs that screwed to the bottom of the camera (they threaded into the tripod mount) and connected with a short cable. They’re hard to find but they extend the battery life a LOT. I got a few of them with my dimage 7i and love it
what bikes do you have? like this raleigh color.
Oh, I go through bikes kind of quickly 😀 the Raleigh is my trusty commuter. It's an older redux. The other bikes are all mountain bikes. Giant, trek, specialized.
@@snappiness i thought id seen some full suspensions. did you bike a lot or before or just to get to shoot locations? nice been into biking just getting into older digital.
Great video; what type and capacity of CF card do you use? Does it have to be 4 GB? Thank you!
I've been using a CF/SD adapter in the camera with a 2gb SD card and it's worked. I can't find a great answer online the max memory this camera supports.
Based on your review I just purchased a F828 camera on eBay. You can download a pdf of the instruction manual from Sony www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/3084/30849961M.pdf. They say it will support a 4 GB CF card if it is Type 1 or 2. I will let you know if it works. Thanks for your video.
@@snappiness it formats in Fats32 so anything more than 32GB is going to cause issues, 32GB should be 16000 photos in JPEG and 2800 photos in raw mode.
What about the battery situation. Does it take an easy to replace battery, or does it use a hard to find Sony proprietary one?
It's the Sony FM50. It was used in several Sony cameras, so it's pretty easy to find third party ones still.
@@snappiness Thank you
You found one!
I have one for sale! Comes with lots of accessories!
How do you rate it against the canon power shot pro1?
I personally like the Sony more, just because it's so quirky and you get that infrared mode (I talk about it in another video). But I think the colors straight out of the Canon are probably better. It's tough to say which lens is better - I haven't done any clinical side-by-side tests, but I like them both too.
an the 828 shoot infrared like the 717 can?
Yes!
Can't believe sony used to have good colors.
They still do. This camera doesn't impress me like the Olypmus E1 and other E stuff or the Pentax CCD stuff
how do i sotp 828 not to record when i takke a picture
There is a sliver dial at the top of the camera that changes the camera modes - is it stuck on movie mode?
@snappiness A note of possible interest:, this camera (which I have and love) has a cold mirror you can temporarily pop out of place with a neodymium magnet. With various filtration and a custom white balance,, you have a camera that can also shoot UV or infrared….restarting it mechanically returns everything to normal optical light, after another white balance…
Whoops. Well, that’s embarrassing.
I wish the Sony R1 and Fuji S9100 were updated
Haven't heard of the Fuji s9100 before - what's cool about that one?
@@photobyTaps okay, you have a cool collection of cameras it sounds like. Now I'm really interested in what else you got haha
you’re based out in san antonio?
Yes!
If you think you look like a mad scientist try using it's focusing laser at night with a crowd. I had people scare shitless with it.
They're $200 + on EBay right now 😢
And it shooots video!!!! #lofiaesthetics @5:55
I've shot a lot of cameras, and don't keep very many, but this one has stayed with me. It's that cool. Glad you're picking one up. And yeah lofi video is right 😆 you can even take infrared video 👍 check out my video about the IR hack
I'm gonna buy you some antacid for your GAS.
Dude…you forgot to mention a big problem with this camera. It takes around 10 seconds to save an image on the card!!
You bought this camera, which sells for 150-200 in my market for 35?
Another question toward your ethics.
Particularly if you are making a good living with creativity.
