I try to do my research on any new projects. I planted 5 PAF and 5 Ponca bare roots in the spring (zone 6a). They really took off when it warmed up. I left the primocanes get a little higher before tipping so I could try to propagate them. Haven’t tried to propagate any Ponca yet but I will try soon. I was wondering if you tried propagating any varieties from cuttings? The plants and even bare roots are VERY expensive and it doesn’t cost anything to try propagating from cuttings and they need tipping anyway. Thanks for the good info.

I simply dig up runners and replant them. I haven’t tried from cuttings. You will get lots of runner growing everywhere next year.

Hi, so you do the same primocane tipping for both prime ark freedom and Ponca?
Also, why don't you tip at 12-24 inches from the ground and then tip again when the laterals reach 2 ft? Thats the recommendation I got from the nursery.

That’s good recommendation for tipping height. I tip them for the height of my cattle panel but will try your recommendation.

Winter pruning one cuts down old canes for new ones correct?

    • @TreehouseVineyard
      @TreehouseVineyard  6 месяцев назад +5

Remove only the canes that have fruited and died in the fall for floricanes. Primocanes they fruit on first and second year canes so make sure you know what varieties you have. I have prime ark freedom and I do not prune the ones that fruited because those might be first year canes and they fruit again the following year. The way I prune I just look for the dead canes, usually if it’s a floricane and has alreayfruited, it will die by fall or winter and easy to spot.

@@TreehouseVineyard So they die back on their own, just cut off dead branches? Thanks for the info.

@@Sue-ec6un yes, for floricanes they turn brown and die after fruiting.

@@TreehouseVineyard Well,, That's good advise! I almost shut you off when you went through ALL the rows, & didn't say anything pertinent. When you did that first walkthrough, you could of snapped off the tops,, & told us stuff
Like,,,, how much fertilizer do you put down every year, & what type?
Do you use any bug or virus controls? Are there any diseases to look out for?
Dry seasons.... do you water 2-3 times a week, especially during fruiting?
Is it possible to propagate cuttings? Have you ever staked down a branch & buried it under the leaves, for propagation?
AND,,, have you ever tried starting the plants from seeds?
AND,,, wheres the best & cheapest place to buy those plants?
Please start over,, & answer all of those questions,,,, & I'll give you 3 thumbs-up!! ;>)

You have a lovely farm and an engaging video. Thank you for sharing this. Do you have a flavor preference between the different varieties you have? I love the Prime-Ark Freedom’s cooked into pies and cobblers and they makes some of the best jam I have ever had, but eating them fresh has been less impressive, at least to me.

Thank you! I feel the same with PAF, such a small window to harvest them at peak ripeness. I prefer Ponca and Sweetie Pie. Ouachita are also sweet but can be tricky to harvest sweet like PAF, at least in our location.
