I miss the blackberries I had, but don’t miss the thorns! If I get any more they’ll definitely be thornless. For now I guess I’ll just have to eat all the wild ones I come across. Thanks for the proverbs quotes and scriptures. If there’s one thing I desperately need it is wisdom!
It's amazing how the end of winter freeze when plants were blooming, looked dismal. Now look at the blackberries, you're going to harvest this year, what a blessing.
First Spring I planted Prime Ark. They really got long 10ft plus. No further blooms, but we did hit the 90° s . Just did pruning and save some to propagate and save leaves to dehydrate for teas. Thanks TP2
Perfect timing! Well, almost. My canes are about 7 feet tall now! My Earthbox berries have been producing for about 6 weeks now. Time to start some slips.
Thanks for more tips and tricks! We have about a dozen or so varieties growing in our backyard Orchard & Vineyard and all doing well here in Arizona Zone 9B! Thanks for all your help over the years! 😎
Alan, another great video on blackberries. I learn something every time you make one. I have one question, what is the life expectancy on plants in wicking tubs. Mine have been in the tubs for 5 years now and they seem to be doing ok, but it looks like they are not producing the number of new canes like they used to. I do water and fertilize them regularly. Thanks
From everything I have read and researched… Cultivated blackberries like these have a lifespan of between eight and 15 years. I noticed, when mine were in the ground, that at about seven or eight years, mine started declining in production and vigor. Five years is not very long, so I think yours may not be petering out yet. I don’t think tubs, or containers will affect the longevity of the plant, but I’m just really not sure.
So many leaves falling to the pruning! Have you tried making blackberry leaf tea from them? I understand you want to avoid any spiny bits on the underside, though.
I had one of my natchez blackberry store bought shrubs I cared for 1+ years and its been cut in half. It grew more leaves than it did most of the year after that. I need to know how to make my natchez grow laterally. Its always too short. I see one blossom this year. Last year it was 4-5 blossoms. No clue what to do other than trying to grow more from seedlings which is very hard as a beginner. I want to grow herbal plants like mint, rosemary, and perhaps sage. I like my blackberries because it's a family treat I want to give and share. That's why Im looking forward to applying any new techniques I can from your channel. Even though my shrub is smaller an 12 inches all around above ground. Thanks for your education brother! God bless you
@texasprepper2 Funny thing..! I walked away from it and a landscaper didn't notice it and my blackberry plant got lopped in half! I was tempted to call it quits but I prayed about it and left an m&m's plastic jar over it with regular water and partial shade under the bush it was cut near. After a few weeks it was making leaves! I have a strong blooming white blossom! It may be just one but I hope to plant new ones from it's seeds asap in season. I don't know how to nurse blackberry seeds here is sunny southern California where summer now kick up to a regular 100 degrees. Exactly the video I needed to see at the right time. Per guidance pruned my PAF primocanes just above the trellis Cleaned up and stuck the removed tips in potting mix in the shade
Alan, bad news from my house...... I have thousands of blackberries on 6 plants 🌱 BUT, the birds, squirrels and chipmunks and destroying my plants. Appears I will need to buy some netting for next years crop!!!! So sad 😞 I have babysat these things for 2 years and now the critters are winning. I am just sick....... bird scare tape does not work....😢. I do have some prima canes coming and already snipping tops. Thanks for all your help throughout the years.....
I have 3 cats that own me,.. but they protect all my strawberries. Blackberries and raspberries from those birds and scuirrels and much more,... Some birds payed with their life,.. I guess you dont have cats,..
This is year 4 w my bbs. They finally bloomed and have the start of tiny berries now . They are way higher than my fencing . Should I prune them after they are done producing ?
I think u will like this … I gave one of my prime ark freedom black berry plants to a little girl and told her dad how to make a wicking tub…he made the wicking tub for her and planted the plant for her… he says she checks the plant everyday.. I ordered her 4 more prime ark freedom berry plants
I planted 3 plants 3 yrs. ago in a raised bed. I have been cutting them to the ground in the winter. When I discovered your method of pruning, I cut them to about 40 inches this season and tied the prima canes to my wire support. I have lots of laterals and berries ready to ripen. I live in the southwestern area of VA. My question is, should I limit the number of primacanes coming from the original plants next year? They are quite vigorous and taking over the entire raised bed. I will probably need more supports, but should i thin?
Watch all your videos....always learn something new or get reinforced on what I already heard. Need to know how far apart do you place the tubs? And the trellis wires....as wide as the tubs? Thank you for all your information.
I would have to go out and measure, but I think they is about a foot and a half of space between each tub. And if I remember right, the wires on the trellis are about 20 inches apart. By that, I mean the t posts are about 20 inches apart.
I usually prune laterals at 18" to 3'. I prune as they grow to that length, not in a specific season. I have Playlists with extensive videos on pruning. I prune Primocanes a little different than I prune Floricanes. Check out my Playlists: Raising Blackberries Playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLutBw50GI1zw4o2K4wXDuUvB3GaD3hfmK Growing Blackberries In Containers: ruclips.net/p/PLutBw50GI1zw9M4UxWAN3n9yeJ_WYS8TD
Have you ever tried using Berry-Tone fertilizer on your blackberries? I used some on a bed that was 6 years old, and had one plant send out 7 new canes this year! It is made by Espoma, and is organic.
Informative video. New subscriber. Recently ordered Ponca Blackberry plants and am wondering if these are your Ponca plants and are Poncas primocane? I am going to search your videos for more info on black berries. I am in Louisiana and mainly grow muscadines.
Hi there TP2 I love your Videos. I live near Baton Rouge, La. I have 3 PAF plants in container about the same size as yours they are not doing well the few ladreals that grow out then the leaves dry up and fall off. Is that a sign of not enough water? How often and what kind of plant food do you feed them?
Actually, I water mine every day every day. Every day. In the summertime, if you don’t, they will start drooping. If they are actively growing, and making berries, they need a lot of water. I know that sounds like a lot of extra work, but that’s why I have a drip irrigation system. Other times of the year once or twice a week is probably all they need. Assuming you don’t get a lot of rain.
I have a few Prime Ark Freedom plants that are 2 years old and are producing suckers from the root system. Do you allow the suckers to grow and will they produce berries eventually? I appreciate all your information.
The canes above the ground right now will produce berries next year and die. You’ll have to have NEW canes to replace them. That’s why the plant’s reproducing itself is so critical. So yes, leave them alone and let them grow. If they are not where you want them to be, you can move them… Dig them up and move them. But I would not do that in the summer. It’s just too hot and there would be too much of a shock. I have an extensive playlist on things like that if you will search it on this channel.
Hello I am wanting to clarify your recommendation of pruining not at 12-18inches. I just planted our first PAF plugs in February and they are doing great. I was told to "tip" them at 12-18 amd then 30-36 inches this first year. I just watched your video and you didn't recomend that on the primocanes. I just wanted to clarify that you don't recomend "tipping" a new plant primocanes or is that for just for an established plant? Thank you for your time!
I have read the recommendations of pruning at 18 inches or so, but that’s not what I’ve do, or have ever done. I let them get three or 4 feet tall, (right above my trellis), and that’s where I prune them. It’s always worked for me. I prune the laterals when they get about 16 to 18 inches.
Looking good on the primeacanes, I had few problems with bugs make a ring around the outer stem maybe cut worms, BTW I ordered 6 Black Gem primacanes from Starkbros they had a sale with free shipping.
Hey, I'm 100th like! I don't envy the heat wall A/C unit on..lol Now if we can get rid of the pesky mosquitoes! I watered my rugosa roses (important to me). We're in drought here. Doesn't make sense all that snow we had! ha
Just finished with the best crop ever picked over 20 gallons. The plants are well above the wire and have new flowers at the top ,,should I remove what is above the wire,, 2+ feet
Is there a material list and dimensions list for the wicking tubs? I think I got all the ingredients for building 20 of them, but dont want to ruin the stuff I've collected.
No list of specific parts, but here's some good info: Wicking Tubs: Here's how to get them: ruclips.net/video/SlAOl995SaQ/видео.html Here's how to make them: ruclips.net/video/9guNoWP8_ls/видео.html Here's my "Hybrid" tub: ruclips.net/video/radHBan7-BI/видео.html
@@BIGALTX I have a bunch of ranchers and farms around me, 60m W of Fort Worth. I was able to pick up 6 blue, and 15+ black and red. Got 4" drain pipe, 1" black plastic tubing, and 100' of the landscape fabric. Home Depot had a sale on potting mix, Miracle Grow for $2.50 / .75 cu ft where I bought 75 bags. Also got the Prime Ark Blackberries coming in this coming week. Just dont want to mess up these wicking tubs, and risk throwing money away.
@@chrismoore8177 Mine are most always spotless. My cows must be hungrier than his. It's just molasses protein and minerals... I don't think it would hurt, but it's all water soluble... you can wash them out
Oops I waited 2 long 2 🤏 they are giant 😂 8 to 10 foot tall with lateral forming at the top. I am not sure if I should try an correct this. I want to see if I get lateral all the way down the cain. I do have them tied to the trellis wire. I'll play it by ear an do better next year.
I don’t think so. Last year we had a hot, hot, hot summer, and they did just fine. They didn’t make very many berries due to the heat, but that’s typical of most summers.
If they are LAST year's canes and they are dying, then yes.. you can prune them out But make sure they are spent, dying or dead canes. Don't cut out any of your new canes
I have a triple crown and ouachita side by side and I don’t know which is which. Is there a way to tell? I ask because im pretty sure you said these two are to be pruned differently. If not, it doesn’t matter.
From what I understand both TC and Quachita are both Floricane berries. They will be pruned a little different, but this initial pruning (for height) will be the same on Primocanes and Floricanes Here's a video on pruning Floricanes: ruclips.net/video/Vh1MsLsKv34/видео.html
Not sure, could be too much water...? If they are in the ground, they may not need watering every day. If they are in containers, make sure they are draining well
If you have a trellis, I would prune 6 inches or so above the trellis. At this point, you will be just forcing new growth and it will help your plants for next year.
Arapaho are Floricane. They are an older variety. Most "primocanes" will say "Prime" in the name (Prime ark freedom, Prime ark traveler, Prime 45 etc) Arapaho are really good though. Used to have some.
To my experience I tried during summer on cuttings like he showed don't work well some may survive. The best way 100 percent is tip rooting in summer, I have triple crown tip rooting in water bottles cut the tops off cut holes in bottom for water run off did this on mothers day now I can see full roots exposed may wait 2 weeks to cut from mother plant.
I don't think grow lights would help. They mainly need to grow roots, not leaves And yes, Hardstylzz is right... summer propagation has been tough for me (in hot TX) so tip rooting is the best way.
@@BIGALTX I had zero success this Spring with propagation and I used the Dip and Grow and daily watered ? I saw another video where (he claims 100% success with this method) just stuck a primocane end into a 8" nursery pot with soil and covered it and then watered to keep moist , have you tried this method ?
I thought you were suppose to leave the terminals alone on the primocanes until they give you berries. Then after prune them for lateral growth. Did I get that wrong?
I always prune the new canes at the wire. I leave the terminal ends alone on the LATERALS... just the laterals... for them to produce berries I think it means more summer berries. Then, after they fruit... I (might) prune them back if they are too long. I'll try to do a vid on that soon
So …when they sent my prime ark freedom blackberry plants .. they sent one with thorns on it…it has little berries on it and …I call it my male plant ..because it always grabs me..I don’t know what kind it is but I cut the Sh*t out of it ..almost all the way to the top of the tub….I thought you would probably get a kick out of that…I hate it
I don’t think that’s the case. You prune when they need pruning whether they are flowering or not. Now, don’t spray pesticides when they are flowering because it will hurt the bees.

And yes, berries with thorns on them are just not worth it. My opinion.
I use the tips for blackberry leaf tea along with some other herb that suits me. Very healthy with antioxidants, antibacterial, and trace minerals

Just keep pruning to the 40" ? I'm just worried that the bed will be so full of new canes it can't be kept suffciently watered or fed.

@@BIGALTX and do you ever have issues with the left over molasses? some tubs are dried, and its almost impossible to remove
Hahaha... my neighbor's looked the same
Not sure what he decided to do...
Does those being in containers make them even more heat sensitive? Since the roots are also above the ground? Seems like it would.
I don’t think so.
Last year we had a hot, hot, hot summer, and they did just fine. They didn’t make very many berries due to the heat, but that’s typical of most summers.
@@BIGALTX Oh ok. Thanks!
Can I plant my new freedom blackberries now? I just got em in.
In the south...yes.
If you are up north.. I think so, but check with your agriculture extension agent to make sure.
Do you ever sell/ship rooted cuttings?
No
These are all Patented plants and I can't sell them
what do you do about little insects/bugs that you see running around the blackberries? are they worms?
I spray from time to time, but really not very often.
I use Bug Buster II from Hoss Tools

Should I cut off the canes that made berries already this year
If they are LAST year's canes and they are dying, then yes.. you can prune them out
But make sure they are spent, dying or dead canes.
Don't cut out any of your new canes
Do you need to tip prune your laterals
Yes, I like to prune my laterals at about 18 inches long.
I have a triple crown and ouachita side by side and I don’t know which is which. Is there a way to tell? I ask because im pretty sure you said these two are to be pruned differently. If not, it doesn’t matter.
From what I understand both TC and Quachita are both Floricane berries.
They will be pruned a little different, but this initial pruning (for height) will be the same on Primocanes and Floricanes
Here's a video on pruning Floricanes: ruclips.net/video/Vh1MsLsKv34/видео.html
@@BIGALTX thank you for the help. Great videos.
Hello i have a question my blackberries plants are turning black what do i do? I water them every day
Not sure, could be too much water...?
If they are in the ground, they may not need watering every day.
If they are in containers, make sure they are draining well
@@BIGALTX thank for the tip👍keep making great video
I’m in north Texas and a new blackberry owner (I’m on year 2). I have failed to prune. My plants are so tall. Can I prune now? I’m kind of confused. 😮
Yes, you can prune now
If you have a trellis, I would prune 6 inches or so above the trellis. At this point, you will be just forcing new growth and it will help your plants for next year.
We have Arapaho-and I have tried to search-if they are primacane or flora cane. We think prima.
Arapaho are Floricane. They are an older variety.
Most "primocanes" will say "Prime" in the name (Prime ark freedom, Prime ark traveler, Prime 45 etc)
Arapaho are really good though. Used to have some.
@@alansreviews Thank you so much!
Do you think propagating these cuttings under grow lights would work? I would be able to give them more attention this way is why i ask.
@@hardstylzz5024 thank you. I also have triple crown
I don't think grow lights would help.
They mainly need to grow roots, not leaves
And yes, Hardstylzz is right... summer propagation has been tough for me (in hot TX) so tip rooting is the best way.
TC's would be the same... tip rooting would be best
I leave the terminal ends alone on the LATERALS... just the laterals... for them to produce berries
I think it means more summer berries. Then, after they fruit... I (might) prune them back if they are too long.
I'll try to do a vid on that soon
@@BIGALTX cool. I got my prime ark freedom, my ponca and my snowbank in jan. Never grew blackberries before so i need all the help i can get. Lol
@@esmysyield2023 Glad to help. Check out my Blackberry Playlist in the description box
Hmmm.. I have some studying to do!!
Hahaha... Uh Oh... I made you think!! 👍😎
Do you have to tie them?
Yes, like this: ruclips.net/video/HsOy7TKvMf0/видео.html

Note to self. Planting strawberry plants next to prime ark 45’s is dangerous. Wind blew just right and I got an arm and hand full of thorns😂
OUCH... that hurts! :)
So …when they sent my prime ark freedom blackberry plants ..
they sent one with thorns on it…it has little berries on it and …I call it my male plant ..because it always grabs me..I don’t know what kind it is but I cut the Sh*t out of it ..almost all the way to the top of the tub….I thought you would probably get a kick out of that…I hate it
Funny.
If it’s got thorns, it’s not a Freedom
For sure it’s not ..it’s a male plant with thorns
WHY DO YOU PRUINE AT 90 DEGREES INSTEAD OF 45 DEGREES?
From all my research, the angel of cut is not something to be concerned about.
I just snip... at whatever angle I can reach them
I thought you're not supposed to prune during flowering?
I don’t think that’s the case. You prune when they need pruning whether they are flowering or not.
Now, don’t spray pesticides when they are flowering because it will hurt the bees.
God didn’t give any organisation or person to own his creations! They are free for all ,so propagate ,share sell and shut up !
