    I have an 89 YJ 4.2L, years of dealing with the crappy Carter carb from day 1. Finally pulled it a few years back, put on an MC2150 and tore out miles of vacuum hoses and electronic crap. Now when I open the hood I can see the motor. Starts right up and idles fine. Its the best mod I have done to the Jeep. No emissions where I live so I don't have to worry about failing anything. I had the nutter also but ran into some electrical issues a few months back. I had an intermittent wire going to my coil and thought it was ECM related so i reversed the nutter to stock and never changed it back. Have not noticed any change in the idle/drive so all is well. Been running this setup for 4 years now.

    Thank you so much for this video!!! I did what you did... disconnected the hose from the fuel filter ..tried starting...NO gas came out.
    Helped me to diagnose bad fuel pump.
    Took 30min total to fix (part store included-17$).

    I'd be interested in the old carb. Up here in Indiana they don't emissions test. I have an 87 4.2 with that carb, but older and junkier. lol I have done the "Nutter Bypass'' which just bypasses the emissions, tricking the cpu part of the carb and junk. It runs perfect after and way more power.

    Hi I have a friend and his YJ is giving him a giant pain in the ass. It's never really run or started well - which I attributed to the crap Carter carb it can with. Now, however, when it's warmed up and I'm driving down the road, the choke closes and it dies. What I've researched says is a bad carb thermostat. I ordered a new one, but it looks like the original is riveted to the carb body and can't be removed?!? No screws. Wtf. Not sure where to go from here. Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Hey Dave, I've got a question for you if you're still around here on RUclips. I have an 86 cj7, it's got the 2.5L engine on it. All the pictures I could find tell me that the carb that is on it isn't the factory carb, I believe it is a YFA carb. However it still has all the electronics on it. I have no way of testing whether the jeep runs or not because the fuel tank isn't mounted up and I don't have a sending unit, or even any of the mounts for the fuel tank. I plan on doing the nutter bypass to get rid of all the emissions crap (i live in Indiana, no emissions here so no worries) but basically I need to know, what is a good affordable carb I can throw on this thing that will work? Could I put one on there from a pre 1983 2.5? Hopefully someone can help because I want to get this thing running by the time it gets warm outside

    I've been there. After having a rebuilt (or was it new?) unit installed on mine a couple of years ago the Jeep has run pretty well other than running rich on start up and one of the two weird red lights in the center of the dashboard flashing and latter going solid (WTH?). Those computer controlled carbs are a mess to troubleshoot. I am looking forward to seeing that nutter bypass done and how it runs afterwards. Hoping your sister-in-law has continued to do better.

      Hi Dave...been a while since I was on YT... I brought the Jeep in to a shop when I first got it - was worn out to the point I didn't know where to start with it - mostly considering the '90 YJ emissions garbage. Anyways, they installed a new carburetor that was a supposed to be a direct replacement for the old Carter. If I knew then what I knew now ...you know how that goes. Bottom line though, if it weren't for it getting about 11 miles to the gallon, I would say she runs pretty good. I'll have to get some pointers on how you go about finding the vacuum leaks in the next video - I figure there must be a central point at which the smoke can be administered, but I haven't found it.

    Digging the CJ series from the start! My dad had a 1980 CJ7, probably the reason I love Jeeps so much. I had a friend with an early YJ with similar issues too, darn thing stalled all the time. I'm pretty sure he ended up doing what you're about to do.

    The 84-86 computerized carbs were absolutely a POS. My 86 CJ7 stalled every time I made a right hand turn. I swapped the carbs with several others of the same model and I did a couple onboard computer swaps. No dice. One day I pulled the computer harness from the carb and it actually ran better and didn't stall on right hand turns for about a week. In reality, the Jeep shouldn't have run once the harness was pulled! Then it started acting up again. Solution: 1978 AMC Eagle carb swap and manual choke setup and disconnected all the pollution control crap. It hasn't stalled since and I've owned it for 28yrs now. My 84 CJ7 would stall when it rained. Same carb. Throw those carbs out immediately. Even if it's working properly. Get RID OF IT. My most recent purchase. A 1980 CJ5, the carb (non computerized) was bastardized by a previous owner and it idles almost like the Jeep in the video. I'm not even going to deal with trying to make it right. My next step...Weber Carb Kit WK551 and the Holley 12-804 fuel pressure regulator, and new fuel pump. DUN DEAL!

    6:28 Dude I've been looking where that f*cking ICM box is for around 3 months now and couldn't find a damn thing.I literally paused the screen,pointed and had a mini celebration because I believe it's the part responsible for this intermittent stalling issue that has made my 84' AMC Eagle undriveable

    • @InternetDude
      @InternetDude 4 года назад

      The ICM box is by the battery on the Eagle. I have an 86 Eagle but I’m going to try fixing the stepper motor & choke before giving up and bypassing things.

    Hey Dave! just a question, what clear coat did you use on your jeep build? did you use a standard hardener or a slow/fast?

    • @RedneckGarage
      @RedneckGarage  8 лет назад

      +Jmac Customs In the summer I used slow but when it was colder I used fast - that answer didn't help much I guess LOL - If you go to a bit faster hardener you will develop a few less runs but it is harder the hammer the clear. If you are going to buff then it doesn't matter as much. I've used Medium until it got really hot out and shot it when cold but was a bit more careful extending the flash time.

    I bet with a good cat, and muffler it will pass. could double up the cat for the test.lol if it would run... Just make sure the cat is warmed up good. All the tubes and valves for the emissions just controlled the heat and lean/rich on the carb. I'm sure on jeep.forums theres people that can instruct on how to tune to pass testing with the nut.bypass. Once I did the bypass my old junk carter hasn't been to bad. It will rev. to redline if you push it. I get 20mpg on the hyway now. Got 12 before. I have more prob.with sticky valves lately. I'm going to put a 4.0 head on mine when I get the dough.

    • @RedneckGarage
      @RedneckGarage  8 лет назад

      +jeremy yeoman That's cool about the head - yeah usually I can get most old stuff to pass - Lean the crap out of it B/4 going. The smaller Weber carbs are easier to get passed than the 38's

    • @pepsitekk101
      @pepsitekk101 8 лет назад

      Out here in Illinois you only need emissions on 1996 and newer. But new cars don't have to be tested till they are 4years old, I'm building a 1995 GeoTracker and dropping the tracker body on a 1983 Chevy blazer frame, and hopefully it will be street legal, haha

    • @RedneckGarage
      @RedneckGarage  8 лет назад +1

      +tekkman boxmb Yeah I think post 75 have to be emission tested or something like that unless you get antique plates which dont have to be tested but legally can only be driven on weekends :)
