Hello from Vancouver, BC. I am so glad your video popped up into my suggested views and clicked on subscribe pretty quick into this video. I too am a disabled artist. I've been a spinner, weaver, knitter since childhood and in the last few years have also gotten into printmaking, papermaking, and bookbinding but weaving has my heart fully. Your Seasglass Shawl is lovely and I'm intrigued with your creative warping board. Now, off to watch more of your videos.
I agree! I'm here to ask the same thing! Your work is beautiful and I to have a small loom. I make only small items because I can't seem to sew my pieces neatly. A video tutorial would be great! Your work is beautiful 😍 I just came across this video this morning. Happy I did. ❤
Run the warp at a 45° angle, pinching the corner point of contact of the warp and weft, then push the angled warp down with the rigid heddle. It's all in the angle and the pinch!
I love to watch you weave. Even thou it is speed up it make's me relax! Tried to weave in my frameloom but I need a solid heddle. I need to find a tableloom! Ordinary I create with beads and I too have helpers. Not so good when you are working with smal beeds but it's kind of okey to me when I crochet or knitt thou. The finiched shawl is stunning and the colours really looks like seaglas ❣
Very civilized.. you are a fine craftswoman and a patient cat owner. I've been using up old yarns in a crochet project for a friend. My dear Polo sits on every project I make if I allow him to do so. I think cats love the creative energy of craft-work. You showed me how to dress a loom with just one person, thank you!
That is a gorgeous shawl. Has given me ideas. Which will have to wait as I'm away from the loom for the next few days. Still have a fibre craft with me though. I'm going to be nalbinding instead. 😁
I do a sort of nalbinding on my woven and sewn hats for the brim, I think I made video of it awhile back, but I love seeing the more obscure fiber arts being brought back!
Thank you! For the warping method I use I know how long the warp is, even though I don't measure it, from there it's keeping an eye on how long the fringes are. There is a 1/4 inch difference in some of them, but a tighter whipstitch and steam blocking helps smooth that out.
That is ingenius how you warp the loom and love that you didn't stop at a "scarf". Sewing the panels together is tedious but beautiful and adds so much value. You hands have touched EVERY INCH...every fraction of an inch...so truly hand-made. I have thought about weaving but I do so many other fiber arts. Some day... some day but with a large scale project so I get determine how much I like it and have a faster sense of accomplishment. I do wonder if you have ever timed how long it takes?
I'm so glad you liked it! And yeah, it's tedious, but like you said, so worth it. How long it takes really depends on the person, and the hyper-focus honestly. When I get really into a larger project I can get one like this done in about three days, but that's with not taking proper rest time, looking up and realizing that the sun set, and my partner having to drag me to actually rest.
I like your warping board very nifty! The yarns are beautiful and they wove up very nicely, the recipient will be very happy on receiving it. Do you know how to do double weave, if you do that could be a way of weaving less panels or making larger pieces of fabric. If you don't, there are probably RUclips videos on it, or ransack your local library or seek out your local weaving guild, its very handy way of making wider pieces. Cheers!
@@HawksongWeaving I wasn't sure if you knew how to do double weave or not, but its worth giving it a go, warning though it can warp your brain figuring it out😁😆😆. You can also do it so that its a tube and make bags. When I learnt how to do it I had a light colour for the top and a dark colour for the bottom and it helped to see if you've inadvertantly stitched the 2 halves together, you can end up with a bit of a ridge but it should come out in the blocking process, just try to not weave the centre line too firmly, well if you do try it you'll see what I mean. You could practise it and then the practise pieces could be turned into applique if you weren't happy with them. Cheers from Tasmania!
Thank you for sharing that with us, it has really helped to see how creating a shawl from panels can enhance it. Could you explain how you get each panel to be exactly the same length? It seems like it would be easy for them to differ just in the tying of the warp
It's mostly practice, but I do try to make sure that the warping peg is in the same place, and that I keep the same tension. They are slightly different lengths, but a few tighter stitches on one end, and steam blocking fixes that.
Hi Fibre Friend, I hope you're OK xx ❣️❣️❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video. You do an amazing job bith warping and Weaving on your Loom. Your Hand Woven Shawl looks amazing and so beautiful. 🎉🎉🔆🔆🔆 I really appreciate everything you share🌝🌝 1. Hope you have a Wonderful Weekend.🌞☀️🔅 Happy Weaving Fibre Friend 🎉🐑🥰 Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Big Hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🫂🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛
I'd like to know that, too. But I'm afraid it is not a trick or hack of any kind, only being very, very precise in what you do plus a well-developed muscle memory.
What the other commenter said, but also liberal application of heat and steam at the end. They're about 1/4 of an inch apart in length so I did some stitches tighter and then steam blocked the crap out of those sections.
@@HawksongWeaving oh ok, thanks! I have a rigid heddle loom and will probably end up sewing strips to make larger projects. I’m very new at it, so it might be a while before I try.
@@kcbryant6546 A tip from when I was figuring out the process for myself: make the strips, but make them of a length that if you end up with different lengths it turns into a happy accident of a scarf rather than a "wasted" strip.
I am really glad to have found your channel. I have woven on my rigid heddle looms, but i am, like you, a disabled fibre crafter and i am finding it so difficult to warp even my smallest looms. You are so inspiring me to try it again when i am feeling more up to it.
I'm so glad! Take it easy, it's not a race, and know that it will take time to figure out what works for you. Something not working isn't a failure, it's knowledge for how to adapt.
I use the name descriptively, I don't know if that's what it's actually called, but basically for me a sliding knot is a twisting the yarn around itself and making sure the knot settles at the bottom of the base of the warp thread where the weft starts. The other knots are simple square knots, which is what they're called, then finished with a slide knot.
Very beautiful! What was the length of your warp for the project? I am a spinner/dyer/weaver/knitter/crocheter...yeah I wanted to learn everything, and I love experimenting with color. Your color choices are so lovely. I live near Glass Beach here in California and you have inspired me to dig through my sea glass for some color combo ideas.
About 7.5 feet all told, losing some in trimming the fringe. I'm so glad you liked it! I had friends growing up who would visit Glass Beach, and they'd come home with loads of it. They and I grew up with "stream glass" which is what happens when homeschoolers play in a stream that has several old dumps upstream.
Practice, clever use of steam blocking, and knowing my loom. I have fluctuating dyslexia/dyscalculia depending on a lot of factors (collagen disorders are weird), so I mostly go by measuring using my loom and knowing the stretchiness of a particular yarn.
I have a Schacht Cricket, 20 inch wide. I love it. It's compact, durable, and can be slung about. And it's also not too heavy when I'm having a bad pain day.
Love that little loom
It's my little workhorse!
That’s beautiful!
What beautiful work! I haven’t owned a loom for many years but you’ve got me dreaming of one again…
Oh, your “helpers” are precious❤️

What a great way to extend the length of warp when you are short of space. 👌
Thanks!

Love the colors! Your warp separator is a towel? Is that 8# reed?
Less a separator, it does that more on its own, it's more of a cushion to prevent sausage rolling. And yup, 8# reed. The one that came with the loom.
I am thinking g about getting a rigged heddle loom. Getting rid of floor loom. How do like ur readers Hedley loom
