If you are a casual observer of the Oilers I guess it makes sense to be all, "Leon is moving to a no-tax state as soon as the opportunity arises" but if you're familiar with his story (the fact that he's been in Western Canada since he was 16 years old, that the Oilers got in on the ground floor with his first standard contract and showed faith in him, that the Oilers are a wealthy organization that provides lots of perks, the whole double date best friend situation he and McDavid have with their fiancées, that as long as you can handle winter Edmonton is a nice place to live actually, and most importantly, that the Oilers are WINNING), it's pretty clear that he's staying

I just don’t understand how some of these guys are so thirsty for the Cup, and yet demand contracts that ensure their team can’t acquire other highly skilled players to get them there. You either want to win, or you want the paycheck. Drai, I think, will take a reasonable offer to stay with the team.
The offer Stamkos had, however, was absolutely insulting. I’m glad Nashville picked him up, Tamps doesn’t deserve him(the fans do, the management doesn’t). Nashville has built quite a team, looking forward to see what they do.
There’s a line between taking a hometown/winning deal and being treated like pond scum. I used to like and respect the Bolts, but that Stammers deal was disgusting. Oldest team, maybe second oldest team in the league. They had to run it back, no question. But, you're banking on performance from the supporting cast to be as good or better while being a year older, and after a bruising run that fell short. Again, they had to do it, that's a tough ask. If Ekholm alone suddenly falls off a cliff, that's devastating to their defensive game. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Edmonton should get rid of him while he's at his peak. Imagine what they could get for 12 million, maybe a couple strong D men and a solid first line forward. Draisaitl likes it in Edmonton, it`s his home. He`s a very loyal guy, as much as he is driven. The Oilers give him the perfect spot to win, and he`s in a very nice environment for him, where he can shine. Why would he leave that?
He will want to have term, it makes sense for him to sign for 8 years. You can expect him to still have 5 more years at his level, so you want to be signed for the full term. If he takes a team friendly deal, he`ll end up with 11,5 or so. If he wants to max it out, he might ask Matthews money, 13m.
There might be a move to wait what MCD does, if MCD signs for 13,5m next summer, Drai might sign for 11,5 or 12m to give the team some room for a support cast.

He's on a competitive team that has been making and progressing in playoffs, Has a chance to go down as one of the best duo's in hockey's history. Unless he recently had some sort of epiphany that he wants to carve his own name out and not be tied to McDavid, I think we see him sign for 13.5 X 8, wouldn't be surprised if its even 14 as his first contract was a absolute bargain from the second year onwards.
