Back in Xmas 1998, my uncle used to play this game on PSX. He always got stuck on 2:59 after obtaining a yellow key - he made it through at the end. Another earlier level he got stuck on was Level 8 (Phobos Anomaly) when the two hell barons appeared. I missed those times when we sat watching my uncle play when we were kids. By the way, I prefer PSX Doom over an MS-Dos version.
Talking about pistol starting this, there is actually no armor at all and only three stimpacks and two medikits - so if you are running low on health and ammo (like I did), you might be screwed before you reach the finish line.
I guess this map is _sort of_ like the Hell Keep of PC Doom in terms of the lack of ammo, although Hell Keep of PSX Doom is a lot worse in that regard. From the raw looks of it, this map seems to be a bit more fun than the PC version of Hell Keep, but I still like the starting outside area of PC Hell Keep a lot more.
This map as far as playability is better than PC Hell Keep. As far as ammo balance, inferior to Hell Keep. The outside area is better though on PC, I'll agree there.
In Playstation Doom, there was an option to restart the level, which left you at a pistol start. Plus if you died, you restarted the level with just the pistol.
As soon as I saw the gameplay, it remonded me of the Doom Rom I used to play on my GBA Emulator on my Phone a few months ago. I might have to do a UV Pistol srart video on this level to see if I can complete with 100%. You'd need to punch out the Demons and get lucky with punching out some Imps without taking alot of damage I know that.
I tried this from pistol start, and infighting isn't particularly difficult to instigate on this map, so I don't think the lack of ammo is that much of a problem. It's fairly easily possible to just run through the entire level and get all the ammo without killing much on the way. In fact, I don't even need to punch anything. It's actually kind of fun for me. They should have upped the ammo amount, but I don't think the ammo on this map is too limited. Granted, on the Playstation, this would probably be a lot more difficult. Edit: Just tried with as limited infighting as possible. It's possible, but difficult, and it's important to know in advance where the weapons and ammo are. I ran out of bullet and pistol ammo after the blue key and had to punch to finish off the last imp in that area, and when I reached the final area, I had to manipulate the monsters to run around them to get to the plasma and health.
It's not hard to instigate the infighting, it's just a pain in the butt because the ammo imbalance is quite severe. I'm sure I'll try to think of some sort of speedrun route to simplify things though.
4shockblast, this level seams impossible to complete with no damage, at least in ultra violence mode; yet i cleaned the stage with the only chainsaw, what took me some while and sweat =) Couldn't avoid being armed quite a lot though (50% health from 200%) As an excuse, playability sucks on ps1 when too crowdy, not helping huhaha !
It's a very real possibility. I'd have to play through Heretic again since it's been like, 15 years or better since I did to relearn the maps. So give it some time. Doom and Duke are the current priorities in the FPS genre ;)
Designing levels with not enough ammo confuses me. The original game was created with the designers making sure each level had enough ammo to complete. Why stick ones without right in the middle. I suppose this level explains the early presence of the BFG, using it's overpoweredness to compensate for a lack of ammo. I say bad form.
+AltimaMantoid Wow, you reply quick! I'm talking about how everything sounds very echo-y. Maybe my previous comment was a tad exaggerated. Damn it Altima! stop murdering my internet signal with your satanic witchcraft!
+MastaGamer27 I reply when I can, you just had good timing :P And I had never noticed anything with the reverb, maybe I'm just used to it from this version or something
I never noticed the lack of ammo, but that's because I always come into this map with ammo from previous maps.
Same, I did for years until I went to speedrun this map and... well, said "Nope nope nope nope nope" lol

MountainD18, done using only chainsaw, thus around 50% health =) 😻

Sounds like a pain from a pistol start. :P
One thing I do like is the fire background effects, wish they had those for the PC version :/
Geez, imagine trying a Tyson run on this.
This map looks better that the original Hell Keep.
Will you be doing a LP for heretic?

Possibly, but the BFG is secret so it may not be wholly intended that way. It could just be an oversight as well.
THis map is fucking pain in peoples ass....but its well designed
I remember this map. I fucking hated it.
That reverb sounds WAAAY overdone!
+MastaGamer27 What reverb?
