Thank you so very much for this amazing and very informative content! I am taking a college class and wanted to find someone talking about these topics. Definitely hit a Jackpot by finding this channel!! You explain the subject in a very clear and concise way that makes it easy to understand. You rock!
Wow thank you - now this makes sense to me. I learnt and understood more from your 11 minute video than I did in all my lectures and readings on classical management theory. I really wish I had found this video before my last exam. It's not as complex as I thought it was. Thanks Dr Alex.
Marvelous. I am beginning my PhD in Organization & Management with a real research interest in sociotechnical systems theory, so I watched this video to serve as a great review of classical management theory to help me better form my literature review later as I move into Trist and Bamforth. Thank you
I really want to thank you for making this video! (And I'm going to check out the other videos too!!) Your voice is so soothing, and the explanations are easy to understand!

very nice analysis of theories... other videos narrate but you discussed..so understood it better. Do you have videos for neo classical approach and contemporary app?
Yes, you are right. I made a comment about that in the description below the video. It was pointed out to me after I published the video. If I do a redo, I'll make that change.
Herbert Simon? If so, he was born around the time these guys were writing. I'm not very familiar with Simon's work but it wouldn't surprise me to see him in a reading mentioned alongside these three for a more recent application of this same type of thinking. What type of class/textbook is it?
Frederic Taylor's first job as a foreman of a machine shop. He applied his organizational skills to finding the most efficient way to cut metal and along the way invented High Speed Steel. You can read his research report that was originally published in 1906 as a kindle book. "On The Art Of Cutting Metals" by Frederic Taylor.
The slides are interesting. People of color building burgers on a production line. Sculpted young white males chilling and playing like so many young Athenians at the School of Athens cause they’re “the thinkers”. The more things change...I just finished reading Cheeper By The Dozen and Brave New World so all of a sudden this management theories are fascinating, appalling and eye opening. Your presentations are clear, direct, informative and enjoyable. Thank you. PS: Your image choices are simply a reflection of our reality.
Interesting point, Eduardo. I think you are accurate but it also depends on the host community, especially in the US, as the photos show. I grew up around a lot of factories and it was a mostly white community and the factories were mainly filled with poor and working-class white males and females (roughly 50/50) back in the day. Now, that community has changed and more people of color also work in those factories. I think the key difference is education level and that cuts across nations. In China, for example, the citizens who come from either rural or inner-city areas work in factories. The same is true for India and these (and many others) are largely racially homogeneous countries. Race makes little difference in those countries where everybody is the same race. The manufacturing jobs, shipping jobs, etc. don't require a higher education but working at most offices does require a bachelors degree. So, I think you raise an interesting point, yes. I'll just add to that the idea that we see the same types of stratification around the world where race isn't a key variable. It's one of the reasons I went into education. It's probably the #1 way for people of all backgrounds to advance. In a heterogeneous country like the US, we certainly do see the type of racial stratification shown in the photos.
So I have an exam of Organizational Development and Total Quality Management Tomorrow and this video saved my life. You taught the Management theories so well!
Checked on almost all of your videos and benefitted a lot by their rich contents in a precise manner. But I couldn't come across any video on Neo-classical thory or Hawthorne study of Elton Mayo & associates. Could you please upload a video on the aforementioned topic. Thanks in anticipation.
12) How would a classical manager begin to implement Classical Management Theory? A. By asking employees which jobs they would like to perform B. By breaking down the production process into specific steps or stages C. By scheduling mandatory employee training sessions D. By arranging factory machinery in the most efficient way E. By adding new employee benefits
Dr. Lyon, Thank you for these videos. They are a great supplement to my IOP studies in college. I appreciate your simplified explanations of theories and ideas that are often very difficult to understand.

Thank you for the video, it's very informative. I understood that Frank and Lillian Gilbreth were the ones who studied motion in workers? (Williams, Chuck, Principles of Management, 12th ed., chap. 2, p. 28). So which one is it credited to?
The word "customer" seldom appears in classical management which shows a predominant focus on control of labour and not customer satisfaction. The entire performance management process (which is based on the classical management theories) is very subjective, focused on satisfying the boss and entirely subjective; which makes it a very dangerous tool, often leading to irrational behaviour.
Max weber took a big picture, bureaucratic approach. Fredrick Taylor took a micro level approach, Henry Fayol took a mid level managerial. They wanted a clear hierarchy that chained command, wanted some form of division of labor, standardised work approach, centralization of authority, separation of personal life and organization, wanted the best people in the right job.
and when talking about commonalities and overlap of the theories can we apply the good point in each theory or the bureaucracy in max weber's theory doesn't let us use time management or many other micro-management ways?
These are just three perspectives/theories. In daily practice, it is rare that an organization would only apply one theoretical approach exclusively. Real workplaces are always patching together their approach based upon whatever they think is best. So, the theories don't put any limits on us in workplaces about what we put into practice or not.
Hi I'm confused, I thought that Frank Gilbreth and Lillian Moller Gilbreth (associates of Taylors) were actually responsible for the brick laying improvements/ Couldyou help clear that up. I guess i have something wrong sorry.
You are correct about that, Michael. Since publishing the video, I read that Taylor worked with that team and perhaps taught them about his approach to time and motion studies and they took it further by using film. I've seen Taylor get credit (which is where I was when I made the video) but it sounds like he is getting credit merely by association and showing them the ropes. I appreciate the comment. I wish I could go back and edit a video after it was published by it doesn't work that way. But, I'll make a note of it in the description below the video so that people can see and Gilbreth's can get credit.

very good video, but I have a question if according to max weber the leadership of the company is a bureaucracy (does not depend on a family member or a charismatic person) who sets the rules and the regulations?
It all depends, but, typically, the founders and earliest leaders set the initial policies or at least the people they hired to manage. In general, the managers have the legitimate authority to make the rules and act on the owners' behalf. There may be processes in place to make those rules official and some checks and balances but most companies and organizations designate the managers as having that responsibility.
Great overview!! I just was unsure on something so Taylor believed workers weren't hardworking and were motivated by money. How was he able to accomplish his goals through people
You are correct. The general view at the time was that people didn't like to work and mainly responded to money or punishment. As far as how he accomplished his goals, he was a researcher. He didn't own a company. In other words, he wasn't out there trying to accomplish his goals through workers. But, he believed that through scientific management practices, workers could be highly productive because the time-and-motion-studies approach he used was a way to keep people working hard.
